Robert Louis Balfour Stevenson (13 November 1850 - 3 December 1894) was a Scottish novelist, poet, essayist, and travel writer. His most famous works are Treasure Island, Kidnapped, Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde and A Child's Garden of Verses. A literary celebrity during his lifetime, Stevenson now ranks as the 26th most translated author in the world. He was christened Robert Lewis Balfour Stevenson. At about age 18, Stevenson was to change the spelling of "Lewis" to "Louis," and in 1873 he dropped "Balfour." Lighthouse design was the family's profession: Thomas's father (Robert's grandfather) was the famous Robert Stevenson, and both of Thomas's brothers (Robert's uncles) Alan and David, were in the same field. 9] Indeed, even Thomas's maternal grandfather, Thomas Smith, had been in the same profession. However, Robert's mother's family were not of the same profession. Margaret's natal family, the Balfours, were gentry, tracing their lineage back to a certain Alexander Balfour who had held the lands of Inchyra in Fife in the fifteenth century. H l ne Cixous, Luce Irigaray and Julia Kristeva all have different modes of writing. There are times when they are writing in the sober, tones of a cultural critic, philosopher or psychoanalyst. They have strident feminist voices (Cixous and Irigaray more than Kristeva). They are personal reminiscence modes. They have a relaxed, informal mode in interviews. And, most powerful of all, they have lyrical modes. Thus, Cixous, the most 'poetic' of the three, will break into a visionary, ultra-lyrical way of writing.
Luce Irigaray, too, changes, less frequently than H l ne Cixous, from a critical to a lyrical form. Thus, in a piece such as "When Our Lips Speak Together," Irigaray will write poetic sentences such as 'Kiss me. Two lips kiss two lips, and openness is ours again.' This is the kind of phrase which never appears in most cultural theorists outside of quotation marks. One doesn't find Jacques Derrida, Jacques Lacan, Gilles Deleuze, Jean Baudrillard, Mikhail Bakhtin, Michel Foucault, Roland Barthes or Jean-Paul Sartre writing 'kiss me' very often.
What marks H l ne Cixous, Luce Irigaray and Julia Kristeva apart from many cultural theorists and philosophers, then, is this personal, confessional and poetic way of writing, where they directly address the reader as the other, the 'you' in an intimate relationship. Derrida, Foucault, Baudrillard, and Jakobson are rarely, if ever, this personal.

Few composers in the history of music have offered the innumerable problems of analysis and performance that are seen in the works of Ives. Although the importance of this major American composer is now widely recognized, the frustrating complexity of his music has succeeded in discouraging large-scale studies of Ives's compositional characteristics on a musicological level. Ives's transcendental beliefs directly influenced his concepts of freedom in creative expression. For this reason, this book will focus on Ives's indebtedness to Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry Thoreau, Horatio Parker ad George Ives. This book begins with an investigation of the New England Transcendental tradition. The Transcendentalists were critical, restless, sensitive and highly sophisticated. They were Utopians who seriously reacted to radical social changes, and advocated progressive opinions. Music was very important to them as an expression of their beliefs, and their musical philosophy greatly influenced the development of Ives's musical thought. The Transcendentalists regarded music as a unique form of communication, a universal truth, capable of penetrating all the barriers of time and space. Furthermore, they viewed music as a means of communicating with one's own thoughts. Ives's philosophical beliefs about musical composition will be discussed with reference to Ives's own writings on aesthetics and music, as well as selected works by Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau and others. In addition, Ives's aesthetic concepts are reflected in the structural organization of the above-mentioned piano compositions.
