How.ver, the national leadership never did institute an adequate joint command and control structure for the Western Theater.The army operational commanders came to depend on the advice of the naval officers for acquiring vessels and advice on water-borne operations. On the other hand, the naval officers relied on the infrastructure of an established army to facilitate their operations.The personalities of the joint leadership were important factors in the success of joint warfare. Grant, Sherman, and Porter developed a special relationship, which allowed them to overcome tactical disagreements, and maintain a clear focus on the strategic objective of capturing Vicksburg.

During this war, the lethality of weapons on the 20th Century battlefield was clearly demonstrated. Recording the events of the Russo-Japanese War were military and civilian observers from every major power of the time. These observers wrote voluminous accounts of the war that clearly illustrated this new battlefield destructiveness. The research question of this thesis is what tactical lessons were available to the observer nations of the Russo-Japanese War that were not used in their preparations for World War I. This paper will look at both observer accounts of the war and professional journal articles written soon after the war to consider this question. To answer this question, the stationary Siege of Port Arthur and the maneuver Battle of Mukden are used as representative battles of this war. Reports from these two battles clearly demonstrate the lethality of modern warfare andforeshadow the combined effects of hand grenades mortars, machineguns, and field artillery in World War I.
Описание: The U.S. Army's Command and General Staff College (CGSC) at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas is one of the most important institutions of higher learning for Army officers, and has been for well over 100 years. Here, mid-career officers obtain the knowledge and tools to assume higher levels of responsibility, culminating in senior Army leadership roles. Since its inception, guest speakers have regularly addressed this important body of officers. Fort Leavenworth's Combined Arms Research Library (CARL) Archives has a collection of over 500 guest speaker tapes going back to the late 1940s, including remarks by senior military and civilian leadership. As they are in the restricted archives and recorded on outdated formats (mostly reel, cassette, and VHS tape), they have, for the most part, been untouched since their recording. This curated collection focuses on remarks delivered between 1949 and 2001 by those who held important positions such as Army Chiefs of Staff, Chairmen of the Joint Chiefs, Secretaries of Defense and of the Army, as well as individuals of historical significance, congressmen and even one Commander in Chief (Harry S.
