Описание:

It has been six years since Rowena Talcott walked out of her San Francisco house and vanished into thin air. Then the scent of jasmine, a voice humming a song, and a shadowy figure in a dark hallway seem to indicate that her ghost is walking. Is it Rowena, herself, come back? Or is someone in the household trying to frighten Christopher Talcotts fianc e, Anice?

One man who might have the answer is killed before Chris can reach him, and Michael and Valerie Dundas, amateur sleuths, find themselves in a mystery that grows ever deeper and more dangerous. Together with their friend, Inspector Prevost, they investigate the riddle of the private detective with the dubious reputation, the curiously unprofessional burglary, and the conflicting motives of a handful of suspects who are so few in number that the murderer should be obvious. But, instead, the suspense mounts and more murder follows, as each false clue only makes the solution of Rowenas strange secret more difficult. And it is not until Michael Dundas realizes the full meaning of the shroud he himself designed that he is able to set a trap for a clever and surprising killer.

A Shroud for Rowena was putlished in 1947.

Описание:

Virginia Rath has, in the character of Michael Dundas and his wife Valerie, created as intriguing a couple as have appeared between the covers of a mystery story since the now historic The Thin Man. And Death Breaks the Ring is another step upward in Mrs. Rath's steady climb to the top of the mystery field.

In this story Valerie's plaguing and persistent desire to see more and better mountain scenery involves Michael in a chain of murder that leads from a mountain-resort hotel to a dramatic conclusion at a fantastic costume party on a California ranch. Michael had no difficulty in ascertaining that both murders were the result of involved relationships existing between three San Francisco families. That was apparent. But the antagonism of these families created an impregnable wall through which he could not penetrate. When, however, he had interpreted the cryptic message on the sheet of paper attached to the three fishing flies, he had made the first small gap in a wall which was eventually to crumble at his feet. His interpretation of this message, plus his psychological understanding of the irrational behavior of people in love, were the means whereby Michael in the end brought to heel a murderer who was tangible proof of the trite remark that all is not what it seems.

The amazing conclusion of this story is only one of the many features of an engrossing and puzzling book--a "must" item for every mystery fan.

Death Breaks the Ring was published in 1941.

Описание:

Sapphira Barlow started life as one of Madame Sophie's girls, but at seventy, after many vicissitudes, she was a revivalist of shadowy reputation. At her Coon Hollow camp in the California mountains she had gathered her Satellites about her to await the end of the world, at 3:45 a.m., Pacific Standard Time, August 26. Into this weird and fanatical group comes Rocky Allan with that engaging redhead, Eleanor, his wife. They have been summoned to the camp by their lean, saturnine friend, Theophilus Pope, who rightly suspects that murder, and not the Judgment Day, is the menace threatening the camp.

The first to meet death is the potbellied and dour Rev. Saul Cheney, former side-show barker. Then, on the morning of August 26, Sapphira is found strangled, with a card reading "The Day of Judgment has come" in her lap. And Rocky, in the remote fastness of the California mountains, with no criminological accessories at hand, is confronted with one of the most baffling crimes human ingenuity could evolve.

Murder on the Day of Judgment was published in 1936.

Описание:

This fifth case in the career of Rocky Allan, homespun sheriff who has found great favor both with readers and reviewers, opened one rainswept night when Rocky encountered a drenched stranger who asked him the way to Brookdale's only hotel. The stranger, with a phony English accent, parted from Rocky with the cryptic sentence, "Has it occurred to you, Mr. Allan, that it's an excellent night for murder?"

About noon the following day the stranger's words were found to be prophetic when the man was discovered shot to death in his room at the hotel. The great surprise came when it was discovered that the stranger was in some way connected with the Graydons. As Rocky's deputy exclaimed, "The Graydons--there's got to be some mistake " "Yeah, I know, the royal fam'ly of Brookdale. Sanctified and sacred," Rocky drawled. "But just why it's got to be a mistake is somethin' you'll have to explain to me; carefully, and in words of one syllable."

He found the Graydon clan close-mouthed, deceptive, and obviously eager to cover up their relationship with the murdered man. Despite their reluctance to have anything to do with the truth, Rocky's investigation finally brought to light the maid who had been fired for "hearing ghosts", and the "few odds and ends" which gave the original impetus to a series of murders which would never have been consummated had it not been for a newspaper story. In the end, with the aid of a fake phone call and a fresh bruise, Rocky was able to reveal a completely unexpected murderer.

An Excellent Night for Murder was published in 1937.

Описание:

In this book the author of Death at Dayton's Folly and Murder on the Day of Judgment has done for the small-town high school what Dorothy Sayers did for Oxford's woman's college in Gaudy Night.

Once again the amiable and homespun Rocky Allan, aided and abetted by his red-haired wife Eleanor, is featured in this tale dealing with the stabbings of a local Don Juan and Circe. The trouble began at a charity dance given at the Merton High School gymnasium. During that time the many hatreds and antipathies which flowed beneath the apparently calm surface of the social life of the families of the high-school faculty were revealed.

And on the morning following the dance the town awoke to a shocking tragedy. A dual stabbing had occurred during the night, and in the mouth of the murdered high-school teacher was discovered an old coin dated 1565 and bearing the Latin inscription, "Whom God hath joined, let no man put asunder." Rocky, with only this amazing modern example of Charon's fare to guide him, undertook the investigation. He found, that a terrifically tangled web of enmities, violent emotions and cross-purposes involved the whole high-school faculty. He also learned of the three colored bibelot cats, at least two of which were associated with the murder. He further learned of a stolen kitchen knife, and was heard to remark, "Nothing happened. People did a lot of talking. About divorces, purses and the smell of onions." But perhaps in the end he received his greatest assistance in solving the case from Mary of Scotland and Henry Darnley.

This is not only an engrossing mystery story, but Mrs. Rath has constructed a solid background which gives her book much of the quality of a straight novel. She has taken her own intimate knowledge of backstage life in a typical American high school and worked it into her story in a way to give an almost unique picture of this little-discussed phase of American social life.

Ferryman, Take Him Across was published in 1936.

Описание:

Murder with a Theme Song is a most notable production by an author whose The Dark Cavalier gained a wide and enthusiastic audience. In this book are included Michael Dundas and Valerie Sheridan of The Dark Cavalier, and Rocky and Eleanor Allen, of the author's earlier books. Mrs. Rath has handled these four characters in such a skillful manner that no one of them outgrows the rest in emphasis, and yet all four play the usual role of hero and heroine. The book, while basically a sound, perplexing mystery story, is replete with characterizations, dialogue, and situations that would ornament a serious novel.

An elderly nurse who tried to drown her sorrows, or her fears, in cocktails, drew Michael and Valerie into the case, and a year-old kidnapping which involved persons living in Rocky's territory was responsible for the Allens' interest. Together Michael and Rocky pursued the murderer whose presence was betrayed by the tune "Alouette," and who felt that withered tiger lilies were a fitting floral decoration for slit hot water bottles.

This book ranks high on every count: suspense, drama, humor, action, and good story-telling.

Murder with a Theme Song was published in 1939.

Описание:

The main action of this mystery occurs in a small apartment house, which has apartments for only six families. Of necessity these people are clearly acquainted, and an epidemic of fear runs through them all as some unknown poison pen writer with an amazing knowledge of the skeletons in all six family closets, begins a steady campaign that neglects no one in the building except Michael Dundas, the enigmatic newest occupant--a campaign climaxed by the murder of Maxine Farley, who before going to meet her murderer, had drawn a sketch of a man in the fanciful court costume of Charles the first, leaving the face blank. The sketch bore the caption in Maxine's handwriting: "Death comes at last, like a dark cavalier."

It was Michael Dundas who discovered some of the details of Maxine's relations with men and interpreted he wording of a telegram in an original manner. He also learned of an old hotel key, but not in time to prevent a whining dog from leading him to a second murder--a murder which was indirectly to cause the killer's undoing.

In this book Virginia Rath has again demonstrated her splendid ability to create plots which depend upon character rather than a mechanical formula. Her people are real people; their problems and fears are genuine. Here is a plausible, realistic mystery story which should please even the most fastidious reader.

The Dark Cavalier was published in 1938.

Описание:

When Kitty Featherstone-Quinn tired of writing "At Kitty's Advice to the Lovelorn" she took the money she had saved and bought a resort hotel in Gold Gulch, a "ghost" mining town. Her arrival in the Gulch precipitated an outlay of ghostly manifestations and bell ringing. Convinced that there was a plot to run her out of the neighborhood, she appealed to Rocky Allan, the local sheriff. Rocky visited Kitty's El Dorado Inn in time to meet the strange group of bohemian characters there assembled and in time to witness a fire which left in its ashes only two sets of false teeth to account for the missing Quinn brothers. Rocky also discovered the evidence of the mysterious midnight shave, the "white stone," the lost china brooch, and the mystery of the tolling bells. Finally, in exasperation, he turned a bell to his own advantage and with the aid of some pink and yellow embroidered roses solved a baffling murder.

This is the most ingenious of all Mrs. Rath's stories, and it is peopled with thoroughly delightful and entertaining characters. The reader will not soon forget Mary Anne and her malapropisms, Dad Allan who put on his fancy boots to go gunning, Olivia James who had her face slapped, or the garrulous Kitty Featherstone-Quinn. This book is particularly recommended to the reader who likes his mystery story to possess some of the substantial qualities of a novel of character.

The Anger of the Bells was published in 1937.

Описание:

Michael Dundas, who combines a flair for detective work with amazing success as a couturier, delves into a mystery with roots laid three generations in the past. The Landreth family closet undoubtedly held a skeleton along with the rest of the old things found in it, just as the envelope with the cryptic figures on it carried the motive, method and solution of the lucky lady's murder. How did two feathers from that same lady's hat land in an unused garden, and what, above all, was the antique Dubosq which started the whole chain of murders? Virginia Rath has based her story on an unusual and fascinating episode in the development of American economic life. The author, in a modern, entertaining story has used facts to give body and color to fiction, a clever feat and extremely well done.

Death of a Lucky Lady was published in 1940.

Описание:

"Emergence of Virginia Rath into a top-ranking place among writers of mystery yarns has for some time been a source of pride among her many friends in this area. Those friends are now given a chance to pursue a murderer in the academic hillsides of Berkeley and a proper chase it is.

"Into Berkeley, on a falsely advertised second honeymoon, rides one Ian Maclean, victim of a cruelly self-centered wife and a cousin of none other than Michael Dundas whose suave manner of solving crime puzzles is known to thousands of readers.

"The murder of Ian's wife shocks none in the strange assortment of Berkeley folk who were in the neighborhood and calls upon all of the Dundas skill to save him. The story gives us a complex group of persons, some side excursions into scandal and a skillfully handled plot. It deserves to be checked off as a 'best' of the season." Описание:

"Her name was Gertie Malinowki and she hailed from the wrong side of the tracks when she asked Michael Dundas for a job. Voice culture and chi-chi clothes made the original Gertie unrecognizable as movie starlet Greta Mallon when she swept into Michael's office during an 'incognito' trip to San Francisco.

"Greta did not mean her expressed desire to 'get away from it all' for a few days to be taken literally and mean getting away from it forever--but that is what happened when she left her own somewhat riotous open house cocktail party for a somewhat mysterious unspecified date.

"For Michael, who combines his high style dress designing business with an avocation for sleuthing, matters are complicated by the absence of his favorite members of the police force. He enters the case, not as a cooperative helper, but as a likely suspect whom Inspector Hoyt would like nothing better than to clap in jail. Gertie--or Greta's--past pursues her to and even beyond her death and leads Michael, along with his trailer turned pal, "Sam" Weller, into parts of San Francisco that are never mentioned by the Chamber of Commerce.

"Virginia Rath knows her town to the last cobblestone and makes it--sinister, storied, or beautiful--add color to a plot in which Michael, the two-fisted he-man dress designer with a temper and a sense of humor equally cocked with no safety device, pulls no punches, but lots of surprises out of his hat." (Oakland, California, Tribune, December 7, 1947)

Описание:

"Dragged reluctantly to an art tea by his pretty wife, Michael Dundas, the famous couturier who indulges a fancy for sleuthing on the side, meets a stranger in one of his own models who seems ill at ease. She is distinctly upset at sight of a picture of the sand dunes and coming out of a faint, mumbles words that puzzle and intrigue Michael. When this same Lydia Courney is murdered that same night, apparently on her way to see him, her strange mutterings take on significance.

"But while Lydia's cryptic words do not seem as meaningful, perhaps, as her friend Marcia's denying she's a nurse, or Sally's stealing of a key, they lead Michael finally to the unriddling of what is one of Virginia Rath's liveliest, most complicated plots."
