Описание:
In 1987, the Boulder-Dushanbe Teahouse was gifted to the City of Boulder as an architectural monument to celebrate its sister-city relationship with Dushanbe, Tajikistan. This book tells the story of the Teahouse and its connection to place through student essays and architectural analyses. Environmental Design students at the University of Colorado Boulder crafted the essays for this volume as part of a design course in the fall of 2019 entitled "Restoring the Dushanbe Teahouse." The student essays reflect their experiences of restoring the artistic work found on the walls of the Teahouse and their consideration of the nature of monuments, culture, identity, nationalism, and regionalism as related to this architectural gem. The analyses explore the Teahouse's features through a Central Asian and Persian design lens using text, photographs, and diagrams of the building, highlighting its structural evolution over time. Through the conceptual discussions and architectural analyses found in the chapters, one can gain an understanding of the Teahouse's physical form and cultural legacy.

Описание: In recent years, Minnesota has developed one of the most vibrant and original beer scenes in the nation. Home to more craft breweries per capita than its famously beer-loving neighbor Wisconsin, Minnesota is pumping out an exciting array of innovative IPAs, spectacular stouts, succulent sours, and perfect pilsners--among countless other styles of lager and ale. These small-batch concoctions are taking their place alongside mass-produced national and regional beers on tap lines and in coolers throughout the state, forever changing the tastes of discerning beer drinkers in Minnesota and beyond. The relatively recent revolution in Minnesota craft brewing has led to an explosion of new breweries and taprooms, and in Pints North, Katelyn Regenscheid is here to guide you through the latest trends. In addition to providing background history to Minnesota's beer renaissance, Regenscheid introduces you to the people who helped build the craft-beer scene--the brewers, the entrepreneurs, and the consumers--bringing an insider's perspective to the business and the beer. In-depth profiles of a selection of innovative and unique craft breweries illustrate the variety of approaches and offer a snapshot look at taprooms from Moorhead to Minnetonka, and New Ulm to Nordeast.

Описание: The managing editor of Christianity Today and founder of the popular Her.meneutics blog encourages women to find joy in vocation in this game-changing look at the importance of women and work. Women today inhabit and excel in every profession, yet many Christian women wonder about the value of work outside the home. And in circles where the traditional family model is highly regarded, many working women who sense a call to work find little church or peer support. In A Woman's Place, Katelyn Beaty, print managing editor of Christianity Today and cofounder of Her.meneutics, insists it's time to reconsider women's work. She challenges us to explore new ways to live out the Scriptural call to rule over creation--in the office, the home, in ministry, and beyond. Starting with the Bible's approach to work--including the creation story, the Proverbs 31 woman, and New Testament models--Beaty shows how women's roles in Western society have changed; how the work-home divide came to exist; and how the Bible offers models of women in leadership. Readers will be inspired by stories of women effecting dynamic cultural change, leading institutions, and living out grand and beautiful vocations. Far from insisting that women must work outside the home, Beaty urges all believers into a better framework for imagining career, ambition, and calling. Whether caring for children, running a home, business, or working full-time, all readers will be inspired to live in a way that glorifies God. Sure to spark discussion, A Woman's Place is a game-changing look at the importance of work for women and men alike.

From Halakhic innovation to blood libels, from the establishment of new mendicant orders to the institutionalization of Islamicate bureaucracy, and from the development of the inquisitorial process to the rise of yeshivas, universities, and madrasas, the long thirteenth century saw a profusion of political, cultural, and intellectual changes in Europe and the Mediterranean basin. These were informed by, and in turn informed, the religious communities from which they arose. In city streets and government buildings, Jews, Christians, and Muslims lived, worked, and disputed with one another, sharing and shaping their respective cultures in the process. The interaction born of these relationships between minority and majority cultures, from love and friendship to hostility and violence, can be described as a complex and irreducible "entanglement." The contributors to Entangled Histories: Knowledge, Authority, and Jewish Culture in the Thirteenth Century argue that this admixture of persecution and cooperation was at the foundation of Jewish experience in the Middle Ages. The thirteen essays are organized into three major sections, focusing in turn on the exchanges among intellectual communities, on the interactions between secular and religious authorities, and on the transmission of texts and ideas across geographical, linguistic, and cultural boundaries. Rather than trying to resolve the complexities of entanglement, contributors seek to outline their contours and explain how they endured. In the process, they examine relationships not only among Jewish, Christian, and Muslim communities but also between communities within Judaism—those living under Christian rule and those living under Muslim rule, and between the Jews of southern and northern Europe. The resulting volume develops a multifaceted account of Jewish life in Europe and the Mediterranean basin at a time when economic, cultural, and intellectual exchange coincided with heightened interfaith animosity.
