Odom also argues that biblical exposition must not be confused with interpretation (exegesis). Although the expository sermon includes the results of biblical exegesis, it is much more than the latter. Although in part a defense of expository preaching, Odom's book is much more than this. Not only does he show, by means of practical examples, what an expository sermon might look like, but he also shows how illustrations, stories, analogies, and the like can be used effectively in the context of biblical exposition. He also gives many practical suggestions for how preachers can become better public speakers and therefore more effective presenters of the Gospel. (The last chapter of the book, "Sermon Do's and Don'ts," is one all preachers should read, even those who do not consistently use the expository method.)
