Описание: Through Understanding Comes Respect and Love This book was inspired by the author's daughter, Jaimie, who struggles with Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) every day. It was written to validate Jaimie's feelings and to show her other children feel things the way she does. This book can help children with SPD learn how to explain their disorder to others; help peers understand what children with SPD go through; and also help therapists, teachers and/or counselors learn how to talk about it. Helping others learn about children with special needs brings understanding to them and help to make them seem less... different. New 2nd edition includes suggested activities teachers or caregivers can do with children to help develop a deeper understanding of how SPD "feels" plus new pages on vestibular and proprioception systems. Praise for I'm Not Weird, I Have SPD: "This book is a must-read for any parent who has a child suffering with Sensory Processing Disorder. It also helps your child put words to what they are feeling on a daily basis. Teachers and other professionals working with children who have SPD also come to a better understanding of how to help these children." --Tanya Wilson "A heart-touching book, written in a straightforward, kid-friendly manner that provides an excellent insight to the trials, frustrations, and new discoveries children with SPD and their families may encounter. This book has assisted in creating an appreciation and acceptance of the unique qualities within all of us, and that we are not 'weird'-we are 'wonderful' " --Lillian Baulkham, Grade 3 teacher, Sweet Grass School, Edmonton, Alberta "When I read Chynna Laird's I'm Not Weird, I Have SPD, I almost cried. Not because the story of a child struggling with severe sensory disorder is so sad, but because the frustration shared by child and family alike before diagnosis is so heart-wrenching. Ms. Laird leaves the reader with a moment of with a moment of joy and a real hope for a brighter tomorrow " --C. Autism can isolate a person due to their sensory challenges. This book was written to help the autistic person adapt better to the environment using the sensory learning channels- vision, auditory and tactile which are the doors to the sensory world. The kinesthetic channel is the output of how our sensory channels assess the environment. Through RPM we know there is a difference between the cognitive learning and the sensory learning. Cognitively one may know what pain is but his hypo tactile sensitivity may not let one recognize a cavity in a tooth. The exercises in this book have been tried with different students before writing. Our goal is to better the lives of Autistic people using RPM.
We know that our autistic children have many sensory challenges. As parents most importantly we want to know what we can DO to help. This book is packed with 'HOW TO's' - practical exercises which can be done for 5-10 mins a day at home. I feel that this book can help people even if they do not have a prior knowledge of Soma RPM. I loved that I was reading it and thinking about my son, I had so many "Of course Why didn't I think of that?" moments - for me the sign of a great resource book that will be read and re-read many times. --Sue Finnes, Parent
As an occupational therapist I have found sensory based learning to be an integral part of my practice. This is especially important for persons who present with difficulties with sensory processing including challenges taking in, interpreting and responding to sensory inputs from their environments. In order to maximize learning and motor skill development, it is beneficial to teach by incorporating the student's stronger sensory channels while continuing to facilitate development of weaker channels. It is also important to utilize these channels to help students maintain a regulated state in order to promote active engagement in a multitude of tasks and experiences across environments. Teaching via Rapid Prompting Method provides the sensory supports needed to help maximize each students ability to learn, both academic content and functional skills. Utilizing this sensory rich method of teaching has helped many of my students develop the skills they need to lead more meaningful lives. --Amy Brennan, M.S., OTR/L, BCP
Описание: Meet the Overs and the Unders: Making Sense of Sensory Processing is appropriate for children, parents, families, teachers, and professionals. Over-responsive (or over-reactive) individuals need LESS sensory information than most others. For example, if too many things are going on around them, they may try to run, hide or have a meltdown. Under-responsive (or under-reactive) individuals need MORE sensory information than most others. For example, they may not respond if their name is called or notice when they bump into someone else. A child's ability to make sense of their sensory processing style is an invaluable skill. Discovering whether someone is over- or under-responsive helps determine what sensory tools will best meet their sensory needs to help them feel more comfortable and confident. The good news is, with this interactive tool, children will now have help visualizing different areas of sensory processing, to help them understand that they are not alone and that they are able to find tools to help them throughout their days. In this book, your child will be introduced to two different families, the Overs and the Unders, as they explore the eight different sensory systems and their over- or under-reactions to different sensory input. Beautiful illustrations paired with just the right questions, this book will help open the lines of communication to start talking more easily about sensory processing with elementary school-age children. Your child will be able to return to this book if they ever need to revisit their sensory processing style, and we include a downloadable worksheet for your child to complete any time they want.
