Описание:

In 1904, the first Scandinavian settlers moved onto the Spirit Lake Dakota Indian Reservation. These land-hungry immigrants struggled against severe poverty, often becoming the sharecropping tenants of Dakota landowners. Yet the homesteaders impoverishment did not impede their quest to acquire Indian land, and by 1929 Scandinavians owned more reservation acreage than their Dakota neighbors. Norwegian homesteader Helena Haugen Kanten put it plainly: We stole the land from the Indians.

With this largely unknown story at its center, Encounter on the Great Plains brings together two dominant processes in American history: the unceasing migration of newcomers to North America, and the protracted dispossession of indigenous peoples who inhabited the continent.

Drawing on fifteen years of archival research and 130 oral histories, Karen V. Hansen explores the epic issues of co-existence between settlers and Indians and the effect of racial hierarchies, both legal and cultural, on marginalized peoples. Hansen offers a wealth of intimate detail about daily lives and community events, showing how both Dakotas and Scandinavians resisted assimilation and used their rights as new citizens to combat attacks on their cultures. In this flowing narrative, women emerge as resourceful agents of their own economic interests. Dakota women gained autonomy in the use of their allotments, while Scandinavian women staked and proved up their own claims.

Hansen chronicles the intertwined stories of Dakotas and immigrants-women and men, farmers, domestic servants, and day laborers. Their shared struggles reveal efforts to maintain a language, sustain a culture, and navigate their complex ties to more than one nation. The history of the American West cannot be told without these voices: their long connections, intermittent conflicts, and profound influence over one another defy easy categorization and provide a new perspective on the processes of immigration and land taking.

Описание: 2017 Nebraska Book Awards Nonfiction: Reference David J. Wishart’s Great Plains Indians covers thirteen thousand years of fascinating, dynamic, and often tragic history. From a hunting and gathering lifestyle to first contact with Europeans to land dispossession to claims cases, and much more, Wishart takes a wide-angle look at one of the most significant groups of people in the country. Myriad internal and external forces have profoundly shaped Indian lives on the Great Plains. Those forces-the environment, religion, tradition, guns, disease, government policy-have written their way into this history. Wishart spans the vastness of Indian time on the Great Plains, bringing the reader up to date on reservation conditions and rebounding populations in a sea of rural population decline.   Great Plains Indians is a compelling introduction to Indian life on the Great Plains from thirteen thousand years ago to the present.

Описание: A classic of the early history of Wyoming

This well known account of army life on the western frontier, by the wife of Colonel Henry B. Carrington the post-commander of Fort Phil Kearney during 'Red Cloud's War' of 1866-68, appears in this Leonaur edition in its revised form, having been substantially enhanced by Colonel Carrington himself after his wife's death in 1870. This additional material provides much additional and valuable historical information that will interest any student of the events of the period. Colonel Carrington was a central personality in the events described in Margaret Carrington's book because, with her two children, she accompanied her husband as he built the fort and commanded the soldiers who would defend this dangerous outpost in Wyoming. She shared his experiences of the ensuing conflict and, as the fort was all but under siege by Plains Indian tribes, of the well known 'Wagon Box Fight' and more significantly the disaster that was the infamous 'Fetterman Massacre.' Margaret Carrington wrote her journals at the suggestion of General Sherman who had the foresight to consider that doing so was a useful occupation for all officers' wives. Thus we may thank Sherman for not only ensuring posterity was provided with the minute detail of life on a frontier army post often absent from first hand narratives, but also-if inadvertently-that some of the most notable events in the history of the U. S Army's struggle with the Sioux and their allies were chronicled.

Описание: A classic memoir of life on the western frontier

The author of this well known and well regarded work begins her story of army life as a young officer's wife on the western frontier with all the naivety and trepidation one might expect. She was married to an army officer of the 18th U. S Infantry, George Washington Grummond and their post was to be the far flung outpost of Fort Phil Kearney, Wyoming, which was soon to be the centre of the maelstrom which was 'Red Cloud's War.' Grummond was one of the ill-fated detachment who rode out of the fort to the 'Fetterman Massacre' of 1866 and thus, by disobeying orders, put himself into the history books as a participant in the worst disaster suffered by the U. S Army at the hands of the Plains Indian tribes until George Armstrong Custer-together with elements of the 7th Cavalry-was eradicated at Little Big Horn some 10 years later. Frances Grummond, as the author was at the time, was widowed and understandably distraught. She was comforted by the post commander's wife, Margaret Carrington who wrote, Ab-sa-ra-ka-Home of the Crows. Margaret Carrington died in 1870 and Mrs Grummond subsequently became the second wife of Colonel Henry B. Carrington. This book is an essential work on the Indian Wars of the mid-nineteenth century in America, it provides valuable insights into army life and also recounts a notable incident in American frontier history. An essential component of any library of the subject as well as being an engrossing and fascinating view of how women of the time dealt with extraordinary danger and adversity.

Описание: Winner of the Stubbendieck Great Plains Distinguished Book Prize

Americas Great Plains once possessed one of the grandest wildlife spectacles of the world, equaled only by such places as the Serengeti, the Masai Mara, or the veld of South Africa. Pronghorn antelope, gray wolves, bison, coyotes, wild horses, and grizzly bears: less than two hundred years ago these creatures existed in such abundance that John James Audubon was moved to write, it is impossible to describe or even conceive the vast multitudes of these animals.

In a work that is at once a lyrical evocation of that lost splendor and a detailed natural history of these charismatic species of the historic Great Plains, veteran naturalist and outdoorsman Dan Flores draws a vivid portrait of each of these animals in their gloryand tells the harrowing story of what happened to them at the hands of market hunters and ranchers and ultimately a federal killing program in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The Great Plains with its wildlife intact dazzled Americans and Europeans alike, prompting numerous literary tributes. American Serengeti takes its place alongside these celebratory works, showing us the grazers and predators of the plains against the vast opalescent distances, the blue mountains shimmering on the horizon, the great rippling tracts of yellowed grasslands. Far from the empty flyover country of recent times, this landscape is alive with a complex ecology at least 20,000 years olda continental patrimony whose wonders may not be entirely lost, as recent efforts hold out hope of partial restoration of these historic species.

Written by an author who has done breakthrough work on the histories of several of these animalsincluding bison, wild horses, and coyotesAmerican Serengeti is as rigorous in its research as it is intimate in its sense of wonderthe most deeply informed, closely observed view we have of the Great Plains wild heritage.

Описание: A Project of the Center for Great Plains Studies and the School of Natural Resources, University of NebraskaGreat Plains Bison traces the history and ecology of this American symbol from the origins of the great herds that once dominated the prairie to its near extinction in the late nineteenth century and the subsequent efforts to restore the bison population.A longtime wildlife biologist and one of the most powerful literary voices on the Great Plains, Dan O’Brien has managed his own ethically run buffalo ranch since 1997. Drawing on both extensive research and decades of personal experience, he details not only the natural history of the bison but also its prominent symbolism in Native American culture and its rise as an icon of the Great Plains. Great Plains Bison is a tribute to the bison’s essential place at the heart of the North American prairie and its ability to inspire naturalists and wildlife advocates in the fight to preserve American biodiversity.

Описание:

In 1869 six London families arrived in Nemaha County, Kansas, as the first colonists of the Workingmen’s Cooperative Colony, later fancifully renamed Llewellyn Castle by a local writer. These early colonists were all members of Britain’s National Reform League, founded by noted Chartist leader James Bronterre O’Brien. As working-class radicals they were determined to find an alternative to the grinding poverty that exploitative liberal capitalism had inflicted on England’s laboring poor. Located on 680 acres in northeastern Kansas, this collectivist colony jointly owned all the land and its natural resources, with individuals leasing small sections to work. The money from these leases was intended for public works and the healthcare and education of colony members.

The colony floundered after just a few years and collapsed in 1874, but its mission and founding ideas lived on in Kansas. Many former colonists became prominent political activists in the 1890s, and the colony’s ideals of national fiscal policy reform and state ownership of land were carried over into the Kansas Populist movement.

Based on archival research throughout the United States and the United Kingdom, this history of an English collectivist colony in America’s Great Plains highlights the connections between British and American reform movements and their contexts.

Описание: In the footsteps of the history of the American West

This book, written by Colonel Henry Inman in collaboration with William F. Cody, the famous 'Buffalo Bill, ' will be a treat for all those interested in the history of the 'Wild West.' The Great Salt Lake Trail was one of the principal highways across the Great Plains at the time of the westward migration that was 'Manifest destiny.' Its path was one which encapsulates the history of the West. It guided the early trappers and saw men like Beckwourth and Sublette. It was the road travelled by the Mormons as they journeyed to find their own promised land. It resounded to the galloping hoof-beats of the young daredevil riders of the Pony Express, as they carried communication across the vast interior, and to the rolling wheels of the overland stage as it opened up travel from the eastern states to the Pacific Ocean. Along its path lived the great horse borne warriors of the American Indian tribes-the Crows, the Blackfeet and the Sioux. It was the bloody ground of the Plains Indian Wars where Buffalo Bill made his name and George Armstrong Custer entered history as the principal figure in the massacre of the 7th U. S Cavalry at the Little Big Horn. As the dust trail gave way to civilization there came the laying of sleepers and tracks as the Union Pacific Railroad brought the wild prairie towards the 20th century. This is an exciting and fascinating history entertainingly told by an expert and is recommended.

Описание: Great Plains Literature is an exploration of influential literature of the Plains region in both the United States and Canada. It reflects the destruction of the culture of the first people who lived there, the attempts of settlers to conquer the land, and the tragic losses and successes of settlement that are still shaping our modern world of environmental threat, ethnic and racial hostilities, declining rural communities, and growing urban populations.

In addition to featuring writers such as Ole Edvart R lvaag, Willa Cather, and John Neihardt, who address the epic stories of the past, Great Plains Literature also includes contemporary writers such as Louis Erdrich, Kent Haruf, Ted Kooser, Rilla Askew, N. Scott Momaday, and Margaret Laurence. This literature encompasses a history of courage and violence, aggrandizement and aggression, triumph and terror. It can help readers understand better how today's threats to the environment, clashes with Native people, struggling small towns, and rural migration to the cities reflect the same forces that were important in the past.
