Описание: «Describing Who?» reveals the significance of photographs taken in contemporary Poland by professional American, French and Israeli Jewish photographers. Writing critically from the vantage point of her Polish and Jewish background, Joanna Auron-G?rska argues that while visual representations of Poland and the Poles may appear atemporal, they are neither ahistorical nor apolitical. They are, instead, influenced by the culturally conditioned construct within which Poland serves to maintain the memory of the Shoah, by war trauma, and by post-war politics. The attitudes of foreign Western Jewry to non-Jewish Poles and Poland have so far received limited scholarship; this analysis is a contribution towards enlightening the conversation between Poles and Jews from outside of Poland.

Описание:
In the mid-nineteenth century, Jerusalem was rich with urban texts inscribed in marble, gold, and cloth, investing holy sites with divine meaning. Ottoman modernization and British colonial rule transformed the city; new texts became a key means to organize society and subjectivity. Stone inscriptions, pilgrims' graffiti, and sacred banners gave way to street markers, shop signs, identity papers, and visiting cards that each sought to define and categorize urban space and people.
A City in Fragments tells the modern history of a city overwhelmed by its religious and symbolic significance. Yair Wallach walked the streets of Jerusalem to consider the graffiti, logos, inscriptions, official signs, and ephemera that transformed the city over the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. As these urban texts became a tool in the service of capitalism, nationalism, and colonialism, the affinities of Arabic and Hebrew were forgotten and these sister-languages found themselves locked in a bitter war. Looking at the writing of--and literally on--Jerusalem, Wallach offers a creative and expansive history of the city, a fresh take on modern urban texts, and a new reading of the Israel/Palestine conflict through its material culture.
Описание: Provocative and engaging, this text invites you into a unique thought experiment, using portraits from some of Shakespeare`s most stirring works to illustrate how our psychological understanding of human nature and personality can be significantly enriched through literature.
This book unearths the highly sophisticated aesthetic/artistic devices, patterns, and mechanisms in a ramified variety texts of the Hebrew Bible. However, it does not unveil and fastidiously study those aesthetic/artistic devices, patterns, and mechanisms for their own sake only. This book plausibly and meticulously proves how the biblical text enlists and uses that artistic intricacy to convey and enhance its messages and lessons: liturgical, historical, social, moral, national, legal, political, and others.
Among the biblical texts discussed are the untold story of Psalm 23, the two conflicting Abrahams in the story of the sacrifice of Isaac, Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, the first transgression and eviction from the Garden of Eden, why the Bible is intimidated by the intellectual faculties of the woman, the power of naming in the Bible, anti-feminism in the Bible, Samson trapped in the cage of his childhood, Moses as a tragic hero, unmasking the real Joseph, the enigmatic scroll of Esther, young David the riddle, the death of innocence in the scroll of Ruth, and more .
This way the book opens new horizons for the reader of the Hebrew Bible by introducing a novel, innovative, and creative perspectives through which the Hebrew Bible can be observed, while bestowing upon its captivating characters and chronicles a surprisingly elucidating meaning.

Описание:
This new title in the Theatre & series explores the intersections between theatre and Judaism, offering a uniquely nuanced approach as a counterpart to the more common discourse surrounding Jewish theatre. Arguing that theatre allows for a subtle engagement with religious heritage that does not easily fall into a religious/secular dichotomy, it examines the ways in which Jewish tradition lends itself to theatrical performance. With rigorous scholarship and a fresh perspective, Theatre and Judaism promotes a transnational and comparative approach, considering Judaism as a religious-cultural tradition rather than focusing on a particular national context.
Exciting and thought-provoking, this is the perfect companion for undergraduate and postgraduate students of theatre or religious studies.
New historical insights into one of the most infamous episodes in the history of anti-Semitism
Joseph S ss Oppenheimer--"Jew S ss"--is one of the most iconic figures in the history of anti-Semitism. In 1733, Oppenheimer became the "court Jew" of Carl Alexander, the duke of the small German state of W rttemberg. When Carl Alexander died unexpectedly, the W rttemberg authorities arrested Oppenheimer, put him on trial, and condemned him to death for unspecified "misdeeds." On February 4, 1738, Oppenheimer was hanged in front of a large crowd just outside Stuttgart. He is most often remembered today through several works of fiction, chief among them a vicious Nazi propaganda movie made in 1940 at the behest of Joseph Goebbels. Investigating conflicting versions of Oppenheimer's life and death as told by his contemporaries, Yair Mintzker conjures an unforgettable picture of "Jew S ss" in his final days that is at once moving, disturbing, and profound. The Many Deaths of Jew S ss is a masterful work of history and an illuminating parable about Jewish life in the fraught transition to modernity.
