Описание: This volume sheds light on how particular constructions of the 'Other' contributed to an ongoing process of defining what 'Israel' or an 'Israelite' was, or was supposed to be in literature taken to be authoritative in the late Persian and Early Hellenistic periods. It asks, who is an insider and who an outsider? Are boundaries permeable? Are there different ideas expressed within individual books? What about constructions of the (partial) 'Other' from inside, e.g., women, people whose body did not fit social constructions of normalness? It includes chapters dealing with theoretical issues and case studies, and addresses similar issues from the perspective of groups in the late Second Temple period so as to shed light on processes of continuity and discontinuity on these matters. Preliminary forms of five of the contributions were presented in Thessaloniki in 2011 in the research programme, 'Production and Reception of Authoritative Books in the Persian and Hellenistic Period,' at the Annual Meeting of European Association of Biblical Studies (EABS).

Описание: Water is a vital resource and is widely acknowledged as such. Thus it often serves as an ideological and linguistic symbol that stands for and evokes concepts central within a community. This volume explores ‘thinking of water’ and concepts expressed through references to water within the symbolic system of the late Persian/early Hellenistic period and as it does so it sheds light on the social mindscape of the early Second Temple community.

Описание: In this volume, a list of esteemed scholars engage with the literary readings of prophetic and poetic texts in the Hebrew Bible that revolve around sensitivity to the complexity of language, the fragility of meaning, and the interplay of texts. These themes are discussed using a variety of hermeneutical strategies. In Part 1, Poets and Poetry, some essays address the nature of poetic language itself, while others play with themes of love, beauty, and nature in specific poetic texts. The essays in Part 2, Prophets and Prophecy, consider prophets and prophecy from a number of interpretive directions, moving from internal literary analysis to the reception of these texts and their imagery in a range of ancient and modern contexts. Those in Part 3, on the other hand, Texts in Play, take more recent works (from Shakespeare to Tove Jansson's Moomin books for children) as their point of departure, developing conversations between texts across the centuries that enrich the readings of both the ancient and modern pieces of literature.

Описание:
The tragic story of Bennie Swim's crime, and the legal scandal of his hanging have been legendary in New Brunswick folklore.
Now, thanks to Dominique Perrin's extensive research and creatively written non-fiction novel, the complex scope of this story is presented for the first time.
The author provides a highly credible account of what brought Bennie Swim to Benton Ridge with a gun in his pocket. He gives us a gripping account of the crime and its aftermath. He lays out a detailed narrative of the legal proceedings and the infamous hangings. In addition, the narrative provides a striking view of the social and cultural life of the times.
Twice to the Gallows vividly portrays the disastrous consequences that can unfold from an accumulation of seemingly unavoidable circumstances. This is the classic definition of tragedy.
In bringing his disciplined research and creative imagination to the Bennie Swim story, Dominique Perrin has made a significant contribution to New Brunswick literature and cultural history.
Located along the Dniester River, control of the town of Bendery changed over the course of several hundred years: from the Ottoman Empire to Russia (as part of Bessarabia); from Romanian then Nazi occupation to Soviet control. Since 1992, Bendery is a city within Moldova under de facto control of the unrecognized Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic (Transnistria). Surrounded by rich farmlands with excellent market transportation, in the early 1900s it was also rich with scholars, musicians, and other artists among its over 10,000 Jewish residents. Visiting cantors, opera troupes and theater companies added to the depth of the cultural life. It was a notably benevolent - kind - community, providing a wide variety of social services. Visiting Jewish soldiers always knew that by standing outside of one of the many synagogues on Friday evening they could end up with a place at a Shabbat table.
During that time period and across several decades, the close knit Jewish community in Bendery began to find themselves at great risk, with oppression descending into pogroms in cities and villages around them. Impressively, the Jewish young people in Bendery organized themselves for self-defense to neutralize anti-Semitic threats against their people. Over time, strong Zionist beliefs led many to make Aliyah to the Land of Israel. Those left behind suffered greatly at the hands of Romanians, locals, and Germans during the Holocaust. In this book you will find "documents and testimonies, descriptions and images of outstanding personalities and ordinary folk, public institutions, Heders, synagogues and academies, schools and libraries, youth movements and sports clubs, choirs and drama groups. They all contributed a great love for Jewish culture and tradition, the Land of Israel, Renaissance and pre-revolutionary Russian literature and culture."*
