Описание: The public services and care being provided to American veteran citizens are rapidly changing due to the increasing number of veterans that live in our cities. This volume documents these rapid developments in order to help veterans and supporting communities understand the services and care available to them.
Описание: The "Veterans Choice Program" requires the VA to furnish hospital care and medical services through eligible non-VA health care providers to eligible veterans who either cannot be seen within the wait-time goals of the Veterans Health Administration or who qualify based on their place of residence or face an unusual or excessive burden in traveling to a VA medical facility as reported in chapters 1 and 2. Chapter 3 examines how officials at VHA facilities responded to adverse-action information received through National Practitioner Data Bank, how VHA facilities adhered to polices regarding providers with adverse actions, and steps VHA has recently taken to ensure that providers meet licensure requirements. Chapter 4 reviews the extent to which VA collects reliable information associated with employee misconduct and disciplinary actions, adheres to documentation-retention procedures when adjudicating cases of employee misconduct, ensures allegations of misconduct involving senior officials are reviewed according to VA investigative standards and these officials are held accountable, and has procedures to investigate whistle-blower allegations of misconduct; and the extent to which data and whistle-blower testimony indicate whether retaliation for disclosing misconduct occurs at VA.

Описание:
In the decades since the Vietnam War, veteran memoirs have influenced Americans’ understanding of the conflict. Yet few historians or literary scholars have scrutinized how the genre has shaped the nation’s collective memory of the war and its aftermath. Instead, veterans’ accounts are mined for colorful quotes and then dropped from public discourse; are accepted as factual sources with little attention to how memory, no matter how authentic, can diverge from events; or are not contextualized in terms of the race, gender, or class of the narrators.
Veteran Narratives and the Collective Memory of the Vietnam War is a landmark study of the cultural heritage of the war in Vietnam as presented through the experience of its American participants. Crossing disciplinary borders in ways rarely attempted by historians, John A. Wood unearths truths embedded in the memoirists’ treatments of combat, the Vietnamese people, race relations in the United States military, male-female relationships in the war zone, and veterans’ postwar troubles. He also examines the publishing industry’s influence on collective memory, discussing, for example, the tendency of publishers and reviewers to privilege memoirs critical of the war. Veteran Narratives is a significant and original addition to the literature on Vietnam veterans and the conflict as a whole.
Описание: The Department of Defense (DOD) and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Veterans Health Administration (VHA) have collaborated to develop clinical practice guidelines for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and mild traumatic brain injury (TBI). Medication continuation, when clinically appropriate, is critical for transitioning servicemembers with PTSD or TBI who have been prescribed psychiatric, pain, or sleep medications. Adverse health effects may occur if these medications are inappropriately discontinued. This book examines the extent to which DOD and VHA developed and monitored recommended medication practices for PTSD and TBI; the extent to which psychiatric, pain, and sleep medications on DODs formulary are on VAs formulary, and how differences might affect medication continuation; and key efforts VHA has to help ensure medication continuation, and the extent it is monitoring these efforts.
Barbara Child put her heart and soul into a letter to her partner, Alan Morris, while he was at the cottage they shared in Florida and she was away at school in California. He was a Vietnam War veteran, and she was taking a seminary course on war--in particular, the Vietnam War. She turned in her letter as a term paper for the course, calling it "An Open Letter to a Vietnam Veteran." A little more than two years later, the war finally took its toll on Alan. He put a Colt .45 to his head and pulled the trigger. Barbara read part of her letter as the eulogy at his memorial service.
That letter led to one thing, then another. Eventually, Barbara began analysis with a Jungian psychologist and shared the letter with him. She began talking more and more about Alan. She began writing more and more about Alan. From those writings came this book.
The book gives a partner's-eye view of post-traumatic stress and moral injury relentlessly taking their toll on the body, mind, and soul of a veteran who served as a medic in the Vietnam War. The book also shows how Jungian dream work with an expert, caring analyst can bring forth memories and the meaning of memories both sought and unsought. Ultimately, this book is both a labor of love and an impassioned outcry on behalf of all victims of war, whatever their part in the suffering.

The period between World Wars I and II was a time of turbulent political change, with suffragists, labor radicals, demagogues, and other voices clamoring to be heard. One group of activists that has yet to be closely examined by historians is World War I veterans. Mining the papers of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and the American Legion (AL), Stephen R. Ortiz reveals that veterans actively organized in the years following the war to claim state benefits (such as pensions and bonuses), and strove to articulate a role for themselves as a distinct political bloc during the New Deal era. Beyond the Bonus March and GI Bill is unique in its treatment of World War I veterans as significant political actors during the interwar period. Ortiz’s study reinterprets the political origins of the "Second" New Deal and Roosevelt’s electoral triumph of 1936, adding depth not only to our understanding of these events and the political climate surrounding them, but to common perceptions of veterans and their organizations. In describing veteran politics and the competitive dynamics between the AL and the VFW, Ortiz details the rise of organized veterans as a powerful interest group in modern American politics.
