Depressive disorders have profound social and economic consequences, owing to the suffering and disability they cause. They often occur together with somatic illness which worsens the prognosis of both. Prevention, detection and optimal treatment of these disorders are therefore of great clinical and economic importance.

Описание: Major depressive disorder is a common, often severe, disorder identified as a leading cause of disability globally. The associated economic and human costs are a direct consequence of disturbances in cognitive function. This is the first book to assemble research, clinical and public policy perspectives on cognitive dysfunction in MDD.

Описание: This volume is the fourth in a series on depressive illness. The first volume, entitled Phenomenology of Depressive Illness, is devoted to a de- scription of depressive illness from a variety of perspectives that include that of the patient, the clinician, and the psychiatric researcher. It de- scribes the major subtypes of depressive illness and places them in the context of the life cycle. The second volume in this series is entitled Models of Depres- sive Disorders: Psychological, Biological, and Genetic Perspectives. This volume describes several major models of depressive disorders, in- cluding genetic, cognitive, interpersonal, intrapsychic, and neurobio- logical models. The third and fourth volumes deal with the biology of affective disorders in detail. These volumes are distinguished by a triaxial ap- proach. In Volume III the biology of affective disorders is described from the perspective of individual transmitter systems and neurophysio- logic and biologic processes. In Volume IV the biology of depression is addressed from the vantage point of symptom components of de- pression, and similarities and differences in the biology of depression are described compared to other psychiatric disorders with clini- cally overlapping features such as anxiety disorders or eating disor- ders. The effects on biology of comorbid conditions such as anxiety, personality disorders, alcoholism, and eating disorders are reviewed.

Описание: Details the differences between the constitutional predisposition toward affective disorders and the pathophysiological changes of these disorders, as well as the secondary effects of treatment and illness. This work examines affective disorders from the perspective of individual transmitter systems and neurophysiological and biological processes.

Описание: Depression is a serious problem. Serious problems often need a complex solution. In her description of novel approaches to treating depression, Dr Radenković is summarising her results from the beginning of her scientific endeavour. As an engineer of electronics with a strong background in theoretical physics, biophysicist and neuroscientist, she aims at filling in the gap between disciplines needed to bring the innovation in the treatment of depression. Starting from the history of electrical and magnetic stimulation important for this field, she is combining the knowledge from biophysics and electromagnetic to explain how both modalities of stimulation can affect our neural tissue. Reviewing the most essential concepts in physiological complexity, she illustrates all the relevant research in different attempts to understand how we can detect the very subtle changes characteristic for a disorder. Those can be recognised from several electrical signals recorded from the body (electrophysiological signals). Fractal and nonlinear measures are in use for several decades, but are still not widely utilized in clinical practice due to deeply rooted obsolete mathematical models originated from the 19th century. Connecting the powerful models from machine learning (data mining) with measures of complexity and irregularity, Dr Radenković demonstrates how their synergy can bring innovative solutions in psychiatry. She tackles crucial questions like "Should scientific research in psychiatry go online?" One of the central questions she is trying to answer is why two modalities of electromagnetic stimulation-rTMS and tDCS- are effective in treatments of depression. A combination of fractal and nonlinear analysis and a well-performed machine learning can become a useful addition to present practice: decision support solution. We can consider it a test which is accessible, easy to use and cost-effective in comparison to many other methodologies tested in contemporary scientific literature. The question is, how long it takes that something scientifically proven translates to clinical practice. Remember how long it took for all doctors to start washing their hands. We can only hope this translation would be faster. Many people need that badly.
