Описание: The American Child is a classic parenting handbook by Elizabeth McCracken. Few of us will agree with the English woman that the child, the American child, is the only subject upon which we converse. Certainly, though, it is a favorite subject; it may even not inaptly be called our national subject. Whatever our various views concerning this may chance to be, however, it is likely that we are all in entire agreement with regard to the other matter touched upon by the English woman, --the pervasiveness of American children.

Описание: No matter who we are, old or young, fashion conscious or style indifferent, we are all aware of hair. We wash it; we comb it; we cut, curl, and dye it. Hair can be envied or derided, and hair can provide clues to everything from age to culture to genetic identity to health. To a nineteenth-century amateur naturalist named Peter A. Browne, hair was of paramount importance: he believed it was the single physical attribute that could unravel the mystery of human evolution. Fifty years before Charles Darwin revolutionized understanding of the descent of man, Browne vigorously collected for study what he called the "pile" (from the Latin word for hair, pilus) of as wide a variety of humans (and animals) as possible in his quest to account for the differences and similarities between groups of humans. The result of his diligent, obsessive work is a fastidious, artfully assembled twelve-volume archive of mammalian diversity. Browne's growing quest for knowledge became an all-consuming specimen-collecting passion. By the time of his death in 1860, Browne had assembled samples from innumerable wild and domestic animals, as well as the largest known study collection of human hair. He obtained hair from people from all parts of the globe and all walks of life: artists, scientists, abolitionist ministers, doctors, writers, politicians, financiers, military leaders, and even prisoners, sideshow performers, and lunatics. His crowning achievement was a gathering of hair from thirteen of the first fourteen presidents of the United States. The pages of his albums, some spare, some ornately decorated, many printed ducit amor patriae--led by love of country--are distinctly idiosyncratic, captivating, and powerfully evocative of a vanished world. Browne's albums have been sequestered in the archives of the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia to which Brown bequeathed them, narrowly escaping destruction in the 1970s. They are a unique manifestation of the avid collecting instinct in nineteenth-century scientific endeavors to explain the mysteries of the natural world.

Описание:
A sweeping and enchanting new novel from the widely beloved, award-winning author Elizabeth McCracken about three generations of an unconventional New England family who own and operate a candlepin bowling alley
From the day she is discovered unconscious in a New England cemetery at the turn of the twentieth century--nothing but a bowling ball, a candlepin, and fifteen pounds of gold on her person--Bertha Truitt is an enigma to everyone in Salford, Massachusetts. She has no past to speak of, or at least none she is willing to reveal, and her mysterious origin scandalizes and intrigues the townspeople, as does her choice to marry and start a family with Leviticus Sprague, the doctor who revived her. But Bertha is plucky, tenacious, and entrepreneurial, and the bowling alley she opens quickly becomes Salford's most defining landmark--with Bertha its most notable resident.
When Bertha dies in a freak accident, her past resurfaces in the form of a heretofore-unheard-of son, who arrives in Salford claiming he is heir apparent to Truitt Alleys. Soon it becomes clear that, even in her death, Bertha's defining spirit and the implications of her obfuscations live on, infecting and affecting future generations through inheritance battles, murky paternities, and hidden wills.
In a voice laced with insight and her signature sharp humor, Elizabeth McCracken has written an epic family saga set against the backdrop of twentieth-century America. Bowlaway is both a stunning feat of language and a brilliant unraveling of a family's myths and secrets, its passions and betrayals, and the ties that bind and the rifts that divide.

Описание: Working on Requirements for a Master Data Management solution and looking for thoughts on how to approach the requirements? You may be able to leverage this guide The focus of this guide is to highlight a proven approach for requirements gathering and documentation for Master Data Management solutions. Requirements gathering and documentation activities are similar, regardless of the type of solution. What differs is the approach, the emphasis of specific activities, and the content of work products. MDM projects do not come along often; this guide can serve as a roadmap for how to approach requirements for an MDM solution. The guide begins with a brief overview of Master Data Management. The guide then steps through the requirements activities and work products for each Solution Development Lifecycle phase. The requirements work products are described, along with an example of each work product. Below is a summary of the phases and primary work products produced: - Alignment: where the Business Requirements, including solution Features are defined - Solution Scoping: where the Solution Requirements, including Information Requirements, Business Rules, and Epics (Functions), are defined - Functional Requirements: where a given Epic (Function) is elaborated on, including inputs, outputs, data updates, business rules, an activity diagram, and associated User Stories - User Stories: where Acceptance Criteria is defined Keys to success are identified for the various phases. In addition, for Solution Scoping, there is a section which focuses on how to approach, plan, and track Solution Scoping. Finally, there is an overview of Change Management and Traceability. The guide contains 46 illustrations, 32 of which are examples of work products. It includes many visual work products, which help to ensure a consistent understanding of the solution. The guide assumes some familiarity with requirements gathering techniques and work products; it does not focus on techniques. The guide demonstrates how to structure the various requirements activities, to successfully gather and document requirements for an MDM solution. The guide also does not focus on formulating an MDM Business Case, MDM Architecture, or technical system requirements. The guide is intended to assist requirements analysts in formulating an approach for how to gather and document requirements for a Master Data Management solution. From the AuthorEditI developed this guide to share with other requirements analysts the approach I use to gather, document, and manage requirements for a Master Data Management solution. This approach has evolved over time, incorporating lessons learned from prior experiences. You may be able to leverage all or some of the approach described in this guide to formulate your approach.

Описание: Next Steps: New Directions for/in Writing about Writing is the first collection of teacher and student voices on a writing pedagogy that puts expert knowledge at the center of the writing classroom. More than forty contributors report on implementations of writing-about-writing pedagogies from the basic writing classroom to the graduate seminar, in two-year and four-year schools, and in small colleges and research universities around the United States and the world.
For more than ten years, WAW approaches have been emerging in all these sites and scenes of college writing instruction, and Next Steps offers an original look at the breadth of ways WAW pedagogy has been taken up by writing instructors and into an array of writing courses. Organized by some of the key foci of WAW instruction--writerly identity, process, and engagement--the book takes readers into thick classroom descriptions as well as vignettes offering shorter takes on particular strategies. The classroom descriptions are fleshed out in more personal ways by student vignettes, reflections on encountering writing about writing in college writing classes. As its theoretical basis, Next Steps includes chapters on threshold concepts, transfer of writing-related learning, and the history of WAW pedagogies.
As the first extensive look into WAW pedagogies across courses and institutions, Next Steps is ideal for writing instructors looking for new approaches to college composition instruction or curious about what "writing about writing" pedagogy actually is, for graduate students in composition pedagogy and their faculty, and for those researching composition pedagogy, threshold concepts, and learning transfer.
