Covers fundamental principles as well as applications. Features some of the most prominent researchers from different centers in North America and Europe.
Practical ultrawideband phased array technology used in airborne and ground-based systems applications.
Ultrawideband phased array antennas are an enabling technology for many ground-based and airborne communications and radar systems. This book surveys electromagnetic theory and phased array antenna theory and provides examples of ultrawideband phased array antenna technology. It describes some of the research on ultrawideband phased arrays undertaken by the authors and their colleagues at MIT Lincoln Laboratory over the last ten years. The book focuses on experimental prototype ultrawideband phased array technology developed at Lincoln Laboratory for applications in the VHF and UHF bands from approximately 100 MHz to 1 GHz, and addresses dipole, monopole, loop, and other antenna array elements. It offers examples of antennas for both airborne and ground vehicle applications. Most of the examples are developed in the context of rapid prototyping for quick assessment of communications and radar systems feasibility, with measurements and numerical electromagnetic simulation results provided for many prototype examples.
The book is intended primarily for practicing antenna engineers, radar engineers, and communications engineers, and for graduate students and researchers in electrical engineering. Readers need no prior knowledge of ultrawideband antennas, although some background in electromagnetic theory, antennas, radar, and communications would be helpful.

Описание:
Since publication of the first edition of Sensor Array Signal Processing in 2000, the field it heralded has come of age. Sensor arrays helped usher in the age of wireless communication by meeting the increasing capacity requirements of ever growing wireless networks, but that is only one example of the number of uses served by this valuable technology across any number of fields.
Extensively updated and expanded, Sensor Array Signal Processing, Second Edition covers a wide range of interrelated topics in array processing to provide an introduction to the field that one will not find in the literature. The book introduces new developments in the use of sensors in wireless networks and the use of distributed sensors for localization. It unravels layers of complexity to explore underlying basic principles of array signal processing, focusing on the common threads that exist in wavefield analysis, rather than on particular applications.
Following an introduction to the basic equations governing different wavefields, the text provides updated coverage on current topics of interest. It analyzes various types of sensor configurations; focusing on those most useful for understanding array systems in practice -- uniform linear and circular arrays.
Fully updated with over 150 new pages, this new edition:
Includes new chapters -- emphasizing the use of sensor arrays in wireless communication and localization
Adds new exercises and examples to the end of each chapter
Provides information on emerging topics covering, distributed sensor array, multi-component sensors, space-time processing, azimuth/elevation estimation, wideband adaptive beamformation, and frequency invariant beamformation
An invaluable tool for self-study, this book provides those working in or interested in medical imaging, astronomy, radar, communications, sonar, seismology or any field that studies propagating wavefields, with a highly accessible guide. It describes each concept in precise mathematical language complete with numerical examples, detailed illustrations, and practice exercises at the end of each chapter to reinforce concepts. As with the first edition, this volume also meets the needs of professors wishing to adopt the book for graduate-level courses in telecommunications and electrical engineering.

Описание:
This book describes and provides design guidelines for antennas that achieve compactness by using the slot radiator as the fundamental building block within a periodic array, rather than a phased array. It provides the basic electromagnetic tools required to design and analyse these novel antennas, with sample calculations where relevant. The book presents a focused introduction and valuable insights into the relevant antenna technology, together with an overview of the main directions in the evolving technology of compact planar arrays.
While the book discusses the historical evolution of compact array antennas, its main focus is on summarising the extensive body of literature on compact antennas. With regard to the now ubiquitous slot radiator, it seeks to demonstrate how, despite significant antenna size reductions that at times even seem to defy the laws of physics, desirable radiation pattern properties can be preserved. This is supported by an examination of recent advances in frequency selective surfaces and in metamaterials, which can, if handled correctly, be used to facilitate physics-defying designs.
The book offers a valuable source of information for communication systems and antenna design engineers, especially thanks to its overview of trends in compact planar arrays, yet will also be of interest to students and researchers, as it provides a focused introduction and insights into this highly relevant antenna technology.
