Описание: The professional judgment of gatekeepers defined the American news agenda for decades. Making the News Popular examines how subsequent events brought on a post-professional period that opened the door for imagining that consumer preferences should drive news production--and unleashed both crisis and opportunity on journalistic institutions.

Anthony Nadler charts a paradigm shift, from market research's reach into the editorial suite in the 1970s through contemporary experiments in collaborative filtering and social news sites like Reddit and Digg. As Nadler shows, the transition was and is a rocky one. It also goes back much further than many experts suppose. Idealized visions of demand-driven news face obstacles with each iteration. Furthermore, the post-professional philosophy fails to recognize how organizations mobilize interest in news and public life. Nadler argues that this civic function of news organizations has been neglected in debates on the future of journalism. Only with a critical grasp of news outlets' role in stirring broad interest in democratic life, he says, might journalism's digital crisis push us toward building a more robust and democratic news media.

Wide-ranging and original, Making the News Popular offers a critical examination of an important, and still evolving, media phenomenon.

Описание:

The growth of the Latino population is the most significant demographic shift in the United States today. Yet growth alone cannot explain this population's increasing impact on the electorate; nor can a parsing of its subethnicities. In the most significant analysis to date on the growing political activation of Latinos, Ricardo Ram rez identifies when and where Latino participation in the political process has come about as well as its many motivations. Using a state-centered approach, the author focuses on the interaction between demographic factors and political contexts, from long-term trends in party competition, to the resources and mobilization efforts of ethnic organizations and the Spanish-language media, to the perception of political threat as a basis for mobilization.

The picture that emerges is one of great temporal and geographic variation. In it, Ram rez captures the transformation of Latinos' civic and political reality and the engines behind the evolution of this crucial electorate.

Описание: There is a lot of talk--in the public sphere as well as among scholars--about how important Latino voters are to political candidates, but most of the discussion is based on undertheorized 'models' of political activation. Ram rez's book presents a sophisticated argument about both the causes and the future of Latino political power in the United States. Mobilizing Opportunities is destined to become the most important book in Latino politics for the next generation. - Jane Junn, University of Southern California, coauthor of The Politics of Belonging: Race, Public Opinion, and Immigration Mobilizing Opportunities takes several essential steps in helping us to understand whether, where, how, and why the perennially 'sleeping giant' of the Latino electorate is stirring into wakefulness and may soon have a huge impact on American politics. Ram rez places individuals within their crucial political contexts of states and other political jurisdictions; he shows how the media, political parties, and organizations mobilize potential political actors; he attends to variation among Latinos and their political settings; and he makes it clear why cross-sectional analyses do not suffice in our rapidly changing political environment. Each of these moves is a big step forward, and together they make for a really valuable and interesting book. - Jennifer Hochschild, Harvard University, coauthor of Creating a New Racial Order: How Immigration, Multiracialism, Genomics, and the Young Can Remake Race in America Ram rez's compelling book on Latino voter mobilization reminds us that demographics are not destiny, and that the engagement of prospective voters is shaped not just by national trends but by distinct incentives and disincentives in state and local contexts. It's a critical roadmap to Latino political engagement, how it varies across key states, and why. - Michael Jones-Correa, Cornell University, coauthor of Latinos in the New Millennium: An Almanac of Opinion, Behavior, and Policy Preferences

Описание: Latino Educational Leadership acknowledges the unique preparation and support for Latinx educational leaders and Latino communities that is needed throughout the education and policy pipeline. While leadership in communities does exist for educational purposes, this effort focuses on the institutional aspect of Latino educational leadership across K-12 schools and university settings. The purpose of this edited book is to enhance a greater collaborative focus on Latino Educational Leadership throughout the pipeline by inviting both established and up-and-coming scholars who can speak to various aspects related to developing all leaders, as well as, the preparation of Latinx educational leaders, for serving Latino communities. The impetus for this edited book focus on Latino Educational Leadership primarily stems from the changing demographics of our country. Much like the growing Latino population nationwide, the Latinx student enrollment in public elementary and secondary schools is at an all-time high and estimated to continue to grow; Latinxs comprised 26.8% of all students as of fall 2017, with this population estimated to increase to 28.9% by 2026 (Snyder, de Brey, & Dillow, 2018). In fact, as of 2014 Latinx students comprised more than half of all K-12 public school enrollment in New Mexico, California, and Texas (Snyder, de Bley, & Dillow, 2017). Given this enrollment growth, there has been an increasing urgency in the field of educational leadership to prepare and support all leaders, but also uniquely Latinx educational leaders that have rich cultural and linguistic connections to communities, who can understand and meet the needs of Latinx students and families (Murakami, Valle, & Méndez-Morse, 2013; Sanchez, Thornton, & Usinger, 2009).Additionally, the number of degrees awarded to Latinxs at all levels increased dramatically between 2003-04 and 2013-14: bachelor’s degrees more than doubled from 94,644 to 202,412, master’s degrees conferred rose from 29,806 to 55,965, and doctor’s degrees went from 5,795 to 10,665 (Musu-Gillette, et al., 2017). However, when compared to all other racial/ethnic groups, Latinxs were awarded only 11% of all bachelor’s degrees, 9% of all master’s degrees, and 7% of all doctor’s degrees in 2013-14. Thus, an urgency remains to address continued concerns related to Latino access, persistence and matriculation in higher education (Pérez Huber, Huidor, Malagón, Sánchez, & Solórzano, 2006). In particular, there has been an increasing urgency to consider how higher education institutions can better prepare, develop, and retain Latinx leaders and scholars (in K-12 and higher education), as well as develop leaders who can serve and meet the needs of Latinx college students to ensure their academic success (Castellanos & Gloria, 2007; Ponjuan, 2012; Valle & Rodríguez, 2012). Thus, the purpose of this edited book is to advance the knowledge related to serving Latino communities and preparing Latinx leaders.

Описание: This volume presents examples of how digital technologies are being used by people of African descent in South America and the Caribbean, a topic that has been overlooked within the field of digital humanities. These case studies show that in the last few decades, Black Latinx communities have been making themselves visible and asserting longstanding claims and rights through digital tools and platforms, which have been essential for enacting discussions and creating new connections between diverse groups.Afro-Latinx Digital Connections includes both research articles and interviews with practitioners who are working to create opportunities for marginalized communities. Projects discussed in this volume range from an Afrodescendant digital archive in Argentina, blog networks in Cuba, an NGO dedicated to democratizing technology in Brazilian favelas, and the recruitment of digital media to fight racism in Peru. Contributors demonstrate that these tools need not be state-of-the-art to be effective and that they are often most useful when employed to sustain a resilience that is deep and historically grounded.Digital connections are shown here as a means to achieve social justice and to create complex self-representations that challenge racist images of Afrodescendant peoples and monolithic conceptions of humanity. This volume expands the scope of digital humanities and challenges views of the field as a predominantly white discipline.

Latinx Farmworkers in the Eastern United States: Health, Safety, and Justice

Описание:

1. The health and safety of farmworkers in the eastern US: A continuing need to focus on social justice (Arcury, Quandt)

This chapter provides the rationale for addressing the health and safety of Latinx migrant and seasonal farmworkers in the eastern US as a justice issue. It provides an introduction to the volume and a summary of the chapters.

2. Latinx farmworkers and farm work in the eastern US: The context for health, safety, and justice (Arcury, Mora)

This chapter provides a description of Latinx farmworkers in the eastern US, summarizing statistical sources (e.g., US Census of Agriculture, US Department of Commerce) and the general literature on their number, demographic characteristics, and living conditions (migrant housing). Although remaining largely Latinx over the past three decades, many characteristics of the farmworker population have continued to change during the past decade. For example, all farmworkers are contingent workers, but due to political forces and an increase in year-round agricultural production in some places, fewer are migrant workers and more are seasonal workers. Among those who migrate, a growing number have temporary H-2A work visas, which limits the number accompanied by their partners and children. More seasonal workers have children who are US citizens. Understanding the current characteristics of the Latinx farmworker population is essential to improving occupational justice through workplace health and safety policy and improving access to health care.

3. Occupational injuries and illnesses of farmworkers in the eastern US (Arcury, Quandt, Rhodes, Arnold)

This chapter provides an overview of the occupational injuries and illnesses experienced by Latinx farmworkers in the eastern US, and the processes (policy, regulations, organization of work) needed to reduce the rates of injuries and illnesses. Some injuries and illnesses, including heat stress, musculoskeletal disorders, pesticide poisoning, and trauma, are common across agricultural work. Heat stress may be exacerbated by climate change. Other injuries and illness, such as infectious diseases, stress, and mental illness, are more specific to farmworkers due to crowded housing and separation from families. Nicotine poisoning (green tobacco sickness) is specific to the eastern US, where tobacco is produced. Understanding the current types and levels of occupational injury and illness of the Latinx farmworker population is essential to improving occupational justice through workplace health and safety policy and improving access to health care.

4. Occupational health, safety, and context of dairy and livestock workers (Sexsmith)

Dairy operations require a daily work commitment throughout the year. Many dairy farmers are aging, and finding American workers for this demanding work is difficult. Many dairy farms have hired Latinx workers to meet their labor needs. Similarly, many poultry and hog confined animal feeding operations (CAFOs) (referred to as factory farms) require difficult labor that many American workers do not want. This chapter details the work conditions encountered by these dairy, poultry, and livestock workers; the health and safety of these workers; and changes needed to ensure their occupational justice.

5. Women farmworkers and women in farmworker families (Sandberg, Trejo)

Almost one-third of farmworkers are women. Many women have partners who are farmworkers or live in families with farmworkers; these women may also work outside the home. In addition to any paid employment, these women

Описание:

Crossing distinct literatures, histories, and politics, Giving Form to an Asian and Latinx America reveals the intertwined story of contemporary Asian Americans and Latinxs through a shared literary aesthetic. Their transfictional literature creates expansive imagined worlds in which distinct stories coexist, offering artistic shape to their linked political and economic struggles. Long Le-Khac explores the work of writers such as Sandra Cisneros, Karen Tei Yamashita, Junot Diaz, and Aimee Phan. He shows how their fictions capture the uneven economic opportunities of the post–civil rights era, the Cold War as it exploded across Asia and Latin America, and the Asian and Latin American labor flows powering global capitalism today.

Read together, Asian American and Latinx literatures convey astonishing diversity and untapped possibilities for coalition within the United States' fastest-growing immigrant and minority communities; to understand the changing shape of these communities we must see how they have formed in relation to each other. As the U.S. population approaches a minority-majority threshold, we urgently need methods that can look across the divisions and unequal positions of the racial system. Giving Form to an Asian and Latinx America leads the way with a vision for the future built on panethnic and cross-racial solidarity.

Описание: The Politics of Privacy in Contemporary Native, Latinx, and Asian American Metafictions is the first book-length study to approach contemporary issues of racialized visibility and privacy through narrative form. Using a formal maneuver, narrative privacy, Colleen G. Eils analyzes how writers of contemporary metafictions explicitly withhold stories from readers to illuminate and theorize the politics of privacy in a post-9/11 US context. As a formal device and reading strategy, narrative privacy has two primary critical interests: affirming the historically political nature of visibility, particularly for people of color and indigenous people, and theorizing privacy as a political assertion of power over representation and material vulnerability.

Eils breaks strict disciplinary silos by putting visibility/surveillance studies, ethnic studies, and narrative studies in conversation with one another. Eils also puts texts in the Native, Latinx, and Asian American literary canon in conversation with each other. She focuses on texts by Viet Thanh Nguyen, David Treuer, Monique Truong, Rigoberto Gonz lez, Nam Le, and Stephen Graham Jones that call into question our positions as readers and critics. In deliberately and self-consciously evading readers through the form of their fiction, these writers seize privacy as a political tool for claiming and wielding power in both representational and material registers.

How Latinx kids and their undocumented parents struggle in the informal street food economy
Street food markets have become wildly popular in Los Angeles—and behind the scenes, Latinx children have been instrumental in making these small informal businesses grow. In Kids at Work, Emir Estrada shines a light on the surprising labor of these young workers, providing the first ethnography on the participation of Latinx children in street vending.
Drawing on dozens of interviews with children and their undocumented parents, as well as three years spent on the streets shadowing families at work, Estrada brings attention to the unique set of hardships Latinx youth experience in this occupation. She also highlights how these hardships can serve to cement family bonds, develop empathy towards parents, encourage hard work, and support children—and their parents—in their efforts to make a living together in the United States. Kids at Work provides a compassionate, up-close portrait of Latinx children, detailing the complexities and nuances of family relations when children help generate income for the household as they peddle the streets of LA alongside their immigrant parents.
