Pamela North is a first-time author with a huge heart for God. She is a wife to her husband, John and mom to her crazy tribe of three precious blessings: Alexander, Zechariah, and Josiah.

A bible scholar wannabe who seeks to glorify God daily, Pamela shakes her head in wonder that God chose her to be the forever mom to three boys who were once labeled orphans. She writes and speaks to share her passion and hope with others, inspiring them to say yes to being blessed beyond measure by God.

Pamelas vocational resume includes working in the healthcare field for over thirty years and being the current practice manager for a surgical eye care team. Family time consists of cheering for her boys on the sidelines of a soccer field or bowling lane, sous chef to hubby John (an amazing cook), and walking the beautiful beaches of Wilmington, North Carolina, where the family enjoys life with two dogs, a cat, and a bearded dragon.

Описание: Reimagining Buddhism through a feminine lens: A powerful memoir of healing, strength, and spiritual awakening.

Written by the first and only layperson to receive full dharma transmission in the Suzuki Roshi Soto Zen lineage, A Bigger Sky explores what it means to traverse the gaps of a Buddhism created by and for men, navigate the seemingly contradictory domains of secular and spiritual life, and walk a path through the heart of the world. Blending memoir, Buddhist practice, and cultural observation, Weiss reorients Buddhism through a wider and more inclusive feminine lens. Her personal and spiritual journey speaks to the bits of brokenness in us all, shining a light on the different pathways we can walk to become whole. Through beautifully crafted prose, Weiss shares what it means to be an ordinary Bodhisattva, describing how the Buddha's profound vision of freedom can be lived outside of institutions and rule-bound practice to support us in deepening our connection with ourselves, each other, and the planet. A Bigger Sky illuminates how integrating a more feminine approach to Buddhist teachings can be applied in spiritual practice, community, relationships, and day-to-day life.

Описание:

This groundbreaking collection provides the first comparative history of gender and emancipation in the Atlantic world. Bringing together essays on the United States, Brazil, Cuba, Puerto Rico, West Africa and South Africa, and the Francophone and Anglophone Caribbean, it shows that emancipation was a profoundly gendered process, produced through connections between race, gender, sexuality, and class. Contributors from the United States, Canada, Europe, the Caribbean, and Brazil explore how the processes of emancipation involved the re-creation of gender identities—the production of freedmen and freedwomen with different rights, responsibilities, and access to citizenship.

Offering detailed analyses of slave emancipation in specific societies, the contributors discuss all of the diverse actors in emancipation: slaves, abolitionists, free people of color, state officials, and slave owners. Whether considering the construction of a postslavery masculine subjectivity in Jamaica, the work of two white U.S. abolitionist women with the Freedmen’s Bureau after the Civil War, freedwomen’s negotiations of labor rights in Puerto Rico, slave women’s contributions to the slow unraveling of slavery in French West Africa, or the ways that Brazilian abolitionists deployed representations of femininity as virtuous and moral, these essays demonstrate the gains that a gendered approach offers to understanding the complex processes of emancipation. Some chapters also explore theories and methodologies that enable a gendered reading of postslavery archives. The editors’ substantial introduction traces the reasons for and patterns of women’s and men’s different experiences of emancipation throughout the Atlantic world.

Contributors. Martha Abreu, Sheena Boa, Bridget Brereton, Carol Faulkner, Roger Kittleson, Martin Klein, Melanie Newton, Diana Paton, Sue Peabody, Richard Roberts, Ileana M. Rodriguez-Silva, Hannah Rosen, Pamela Scully, Mimi Sheller, Marek Steedman, Michael Zeuske

Описание: In a fresh and invigorating look at British cinema John Orr examines the neglected relationship between romanticism and modernism from 1929 to the present-day. Encompassing a broad selection of films, film-makers and debates, this book brings a new perspective to how scholars might understand and interrogate the major traditions that have shaped British cinema history.. Orr identifies two prominent genres in the British template that often go unrecognised, the fugitive film and the trauma film, whose narratives have bridged the gap between romantic and modern forms. Here Hitchcock, Lean, Powell, Reed and Robert Hamer are identified as key romantics, Roeg, Losey, Antonioni, Kubrick and Skolimowski as later modernists. The book goes on to assess the narrowing divide through the films of Terence Davies and Bill Douglas and concludes by analysing its persistence in the new century, in the prize-winning features Control and Hunger..
