Описание:

This highly accessible volume tours the competencies and challenges relating to contemporary mental health service delivery in correctional settings. Balancing the general and specific knowledge needed for conducting effective therapy in jails and prisons, leading experts present eclectic theoretical models, current statistics, diagnostic information, and frontline wisdom. Evidence-based practices are detailed for mental health assessment, treatment, and management of inmates, including specialized populations (women, youth) and offenders with specific pathologies (sexual offenders, psychopaths). And readers are reminded that correctional psychology is in an evolutionary state, adapting to the diverse needs of populations and practitioners in the context of reducing further offending.

Included in the coverage:

- Assessing and treating offenders with mental illness.

- Substance use disorders in correctional populations.

- Assessing and treating offenders with intellectual disabilities.

- Assessing and treating those who have committed sexual offenses.

- Self-harm/suicidality in corrections.

- Correctional staff: The issue of job stress.

The Practice of Correctional Psychology will be of major interest to psychologists, social workers, and masters level clinicians and students who work in correctional institutions and settings with offenders on parole or probation, as well as other professionals within the correctional system who work directly with offenders, such as probation officers, parole officers, program officers, and corrections officers.

Описание:

Hostage negotiation is one of the most remarkable sub-specialties in the corrections environment. Through a combination of tactical communication, empathic connection and, at times, subterfuge, negotiators persuade desperate, suicidal or homicidal individuals, often intoxicated or mentally ill, to relinquish their position of power and submit to the authority of the correctional institution. This is the second book in Amdur and Eddy's series. It focuses specifically on the corrections environment. In this book, the reader will find thirty-two different training scenarios that cover the gamut of mental illness and personality disorders. Most of them are based on cases that one or the other of the authors have actually encountered. There are full instructions on how to set up the scenario, and how to brief the role player so that he or she plays it true-to-life. The scenarios are colorful, unpredictable, and multi-layered, and require active involvement of the secondary negotiator and the rest of the team for intelligence gathering. Just as a real situation can change radically when new information is acquired, most of the scenarios will have unexpected twists that require the negotiators to think on their feet, and sometimes diametrically change directions. Many include ERT, and some are specifically crafted so that tactical officers can practice various skills during the scenarios, such as food deliveries, release of an injured hostage, delivery of the throw phone, or documents the subject has demanded. They can plant listening devices, or attempt to get a visual on the scene. Team leaders can program the negotiation exercise for 'failure, ' something that neither ERT nor the negotiators will be informed. When it is suddenly time to go, they must be ready to tactically respond. Although it is an educational read for anyone involved in crisis intervention, far beyond corrections work - it is written as a resource book for HNT/CNT teams.

Описание: This book reviews how new and promising evidence-based interventions are being used with those involved in the criminal justice system. While there has been an increased emphasis on evidence-based practice within forensic treatment, there remains a disjoint between what we know works and adapting these interventions to those involved in the criminal justice system.

This book seeks to bridge that gap by providing an overview of what we know works and how that information has been translated into offender treatment. In addition, it highlights avenues where additional research is needed.
This book is comprised of three parts:
In the first part, current models of correctional treatment including the Risk, Needs, Responsivity Model, The Good Lives Model and Cognitive Behavioral Models are presented.
In the second part, the chapters address clinical issues such as the therapeutic alliance, clinician factors, and diversity related issues that impact treatment outcome.
In the third and final part of the book, adaptions of innovative and cutting-edge evidence-based treatments such as Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Trauma Informed Care, Mindfulness, Motivational Interviewing, Assertive Community Treatment, Multisystemic Treatment, New frontiers in Intimate Partner Violence treatment, and the current research on the treatment of those with psychopathy are presented.
Research supporting these treatment approaches targeting areas such as self-management, psychological well-being, treatment engagement and retention and their relationship to recidivism will be reviewed, while their adaptation for use with forensic populations is discussed. The book concludes with the editors’ summary of the findings and a discussion of the future of evidence-based interventions within the field of forensic psychology.
