Описание: Higher education in the United States and elsewhere is being forced to respond to several disparate social and economic pressures: social trust and connectedness is down, empathy across citizens is deteriorating, political awareness and participation are low, and job prospects and financial security are sobering for many citizens, even the college educated. The response to these pressures is not to double down on one mission of higher education, namely job creation. Instead, higher education marching into the next decades requires an integrative approach that promotes job creation, skill development, citizen cultivation, and knowledge dissemination--all oriented towards strengthening communities and providing opportunity for all citizens to pursue the good life. Across eight chapters, this book provides historical and theoretical analyses of the role of higher education in society across these four missions, as well as applied mini and extended case examples demonstrating how the four missions can be successfully integrated. The extended cases consist of one pedagogy example, a teaching initiative labeled "joined up service learning" that represents deep partnership between the university and community, and an institutional design case of an academic research center and its work conducted in partnership with community stakeholders. Recommendations are advanced for an integrated approach to performance funding of higher education institutions, tenure and promotion expectations for faculty, and graduation requirements for students, among others. Описание: Corporate Citizenship provides comprehensive foundation that equips students with the tools to analyse the development and implementation of globally responsible business behavior. While corporate citizenship may be a theoretical and philosophical subject, this textbook offers a broad range of examples and situations that give students the opportunity to apply their knowledge in a critical manner within a business context.
Описание: Companies are corporate citizens of society; just as individuals are private citizens. They exercise rights but also have responsibilities. This book discusses why and how they must step up as good citizens and use their power and influence to help humanity face the challenges of the future, towards learning to live with modern capitalism.
Описание: Progress of corporate history since the industrial revolution has been an enormous growth in freedom of enterprise, economic prosperity, innovation, technical, and intellectual advancement but it has also been, stoking the passions of greed, a slow and sure decay of morality, and social order culminating in high unemployment and Occupy Wall Street movements.
Business enterprise is a profound thought of good intentions towards the society, which sets apart corporate culture over individual choice. A culture is a function of true knowledge of awareness, an identity with the ethical responsibility, that by which corporate infers and society teaches. Immanuel Kant raised the question whether a science of metaphysics with a logical structure, like that of the well established mathematical and measuring ethical assets usage, is crucial for corporate to bring the abstractions into reality, acknowledge value where value is due, and deconstruct what is valueless.
This book addresses these issues effectively by subject - object distinction of qualitative and quantitative elements of management, what Kant had pleaded for.
Описание: Today Americans feel powerless in the face of problems on every front. Such feelings are acute in higher education, where educators are experiencing an avalanche of changes: cost cutting, new technologies, and demands that higher education be narrowly geared to the needs of today's workplace. College graduates face mounting debt and uncertain job prospects, and worry about a coarsening of the mass culture and the erosion of authentic human relationships. Higher education is increasingly seen, and often portrays itself, as a ticket to individual success--a private good, not a public one.Democracy's Education grows from the American Commonwealth Partnership, a year-long project to revitalize the democratic narrative of higher education that began with an invitation to Harry Boyte from the White House to put together a coalition aimed at strengthening higher education as a public good. The project was launched at the beginning of 2012 to mark the 150th anniversary of the Morrill Act, which created land grant colleges.Beginning with an essay by Harry C. Boyte, ""Reinventing Citizenship as Public Work,"" which challenges educators and their partners to claim their power to shape the story of higher education and the civic careers of students, the collection brings world-famous scholars, senior government officials, and university presidents together with faculty, students, staff, community organizers, and intellectuals from across the United States and South Africa and Japan. Contributors describe many constructive responses to change already taking place in different kinds of institutions, and present cutting-edge ideas like ""civic science,"" ""civic studies,"" ""citizen professionalism,"" and ""citizen alumni."" Authors detail practical approaches to making change, from new faculty and student roles to changes in curriculum and student life and strategies for everyday citizen empowerment. Overall, the work develops a democratic story of education urgently needed to address today's challenges, from climate change to growing inequality.
