Описание: It is common to think of the Arctic as remote, perched at the farthest reaches of the world--a simple and harmonious, isolated utopia. But the reality, as Janne Flora shows us, is anything but. In Wandering Spirits, Flora reveals how deeply connected the Arctic is to the rest of the world and how it has been affected by the social, political, economic, and environmental shifts that ushered in the modern age.

In this innovative study, Flora focuses on Inuit communities in Greenland and addresses a central puzzle: their alarmingly high suicide rate. She explores the deep connections between loneliness and modernity in the Arctic, tracing the history of Greenland and analyzing the social dynamics that shaped it. Flora's thorough, sensitive engagement with the families that make up these communities uncovers the complex interplay between loneliness and a host of economic and environmental practices, including the widespread local tradition of hunting. Wandering Spirits offers a vivid portrait of a largely overlooked world, in all its fragility and nuance, while engaging with core anthropological concerns of kinship and the structure of social relations.

Cloneliness: On the Reproduction of Loneliness

Описание: Recent posthuman philosophies, human-computer interface studies, and technology-inspired biopolitical discourses and practices are reinventing and reimagining loneliness in different communities.

Cloneliness: The Reproduction of Loneliness takes a cross-cultural approach to loneliness by examining 20th-century artistic expressions and examinations of loneliness in the context of more recent global expressions grounded in social networks, virtual reality, the biopolitical commons, academic credentialization and such practices as Hikikomori. Newer forms of loneliness, pushed by the algorithms of biopolitical capitalism, result in what this books calls "cloneliness." Michael O'Sullivan plots the transformation in loneliness in literature and philosophy in readings that take us from Henry James and such classic works as Frank O'Connor's The Lonely Voice and Richard Yates's Eleven Kinds of Loneliness to more recent expressions in such writers as David Foster Wallace, Yiyun Li, and Sayaka Murata.

Michael O'Sullivan argues that cloneliness as an institutional practice of reproduction in society nurtures, normalizes, and reproduces loneliness in order to create subjects who are more willing to accept ideologies of competition, "extreme individualism, +? and the stresses of being "interconnected loners."

Описание:

How children are taught to control their feelings and how they resist
this emotional management through cultural production

Today, even young kids talk to each other across social media by referencing memes,
songs, and movements, constructing a common vernacular that resists parental,
educational, and media imperatives to name their feelings and thus control
their bodies. Over the past two decades, children's television programming has provided
a therapeutic site for the processing of emotions such as anger, but in doing
so has enforced normative structures of feeling that, Jane Juffer argues,
weaken the intensity and range of children's affective experiences.

Don't Use Your Words seeks
to challenge those norms, highlighting the ways that kids express their
feelings through cultural productions including drawings, fan art, memes, YouTube
videos, dance moves, and conversations while gaming online. Focusing on kids
between ages five and nine, Don't Use Your Words situates these
productions in specific contexts, including immigration policy referenced in drawings
by Central American children just released from detention centers and electoral
politics as contested in kids' artwork expressing their anger at Trump's
victory. Taking issue with the mainstream tendency to speak on behalf of
children, Juffer argues that kids have the agency to answer for themselves:
what does it feel like to be a kid?

Описание: Navigating New Media Networks examines the changes introduced into society through the increasing use of communication technology. The development of a networked society has allowed individuals to acquire the social resources and support needed to thrive in the modern world, but it has also placed great pressure on the individual to conduct the communication work needed to form and maintain relationships. McEwan explores this issue by delving into topics like identity, privacy, communication competence, online communities, online social support, mediated relational maintenance, and mobile communication. This work will be of interest to scholars of sociology, psychology, and communication.
