Описание: This book revisits the economic relationship that ties the UK andIreland to the United States in the aftermath of the greatest economic crisisof the past fifty years. Whenconsidering recent developments to these economic links, it appears thatoppositional forces are at work. On one hand, globalization and the rise of neweconomic powers may undermine the ties. Besides, Ireland’s and the UK’s EuropeanUnion membership could also loosen their economic ties with the US. Conversely, the future Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership agreement may wellstrengthen trade and investment links between the US and Europe. Are the economic bonds between the US, the UK and Ireland waning, assome pundits purport? Or are those claims overstated? Could their economicrelationship simply be going through a process of change? Although there maynot be a single and straightforward answer to these questions, the authors seekto address these issues and provide insight into the changing dynamics of thishistoric economic relationship.

Описание: The Psychology of Sustainability: Understanding the Relationship between Self and Earth is a dynamic anthology that, through a uniquely psychological lens, provides students with insight into the connection between humans and their environment. With each chapter, the author presents students with insight to the applicability of psychological concepts for holistically resolving sustainability problems. Articles that explore the psychological underpinnings of why we behave towards each other and Earth are included in each chapter, and the author's original material allows students to contextualize those readings and inspires their critical thinking. Over the course of 10 chapters, students read about the relationship between human dignity and perceived responsibility to act sustainably, the interconnected nature of human ecology, and the effect of parenting, attachment, and social value orientation on an individual's sustainability inclination. Additional readings examine various psychological concepts, including lifespan development, environmental identity, problem-solving and the creation of new sustainability solutions, and the relationship between gratitude, kindness, and sustainability inclination. The Psychology of Sustainability is an ideal text for courses in sustainability studies, sustainability science, environmental science, built environment, and psychology.

Описание:
This book sheds new light on the relationship between economy and the environment by approaching the issue from evolutionary and institutional economics. Building a framework of theory and empirical analysis, it provides an in-depth perspective on how economic growth and environmental policy interact and historically evolve.
Orthodox environmental economics usually understands environmental issues under the rules of market economy, while environmental sciences subordinate economy to physical constraints of the environment. Instead of these hierarchical visions, this book recognizes economy and the environment as co-evolving systems.
The theoretical framework is elaborated based on the regulation and post-Keynesian theories combined. An idea of three-dimensional factors--capital, labor, and the environment--leads to conceptual and mathematical models, which will be applicable to wider analyses.
Using this framework, Japanese history is analyzed as a typical example of environmental policy development. Historical transformations of environmental policies and growth regimes are explained using indices and econometric analysis. Experiences of strict regulations with positive economic impacts are also identified.
These works lead to some interesting implications, which include mechanisms, the possibility, and conditions of "green growth''. This book proposes a new approach by bridging the gap between evolutionary-institutional economics and environmental economics, which should be stimulating to them both and possibly open the door for a new research avenue.
The demands placed on land, water, energy and other natural resources are exacerbated as the world population continues to increase together with the expectations of economic growth. This, combined with concerns over environmental change, presents a set of scientific, policy and management issues that are critical for sustainability.
Resource Accounting for Sustainability Assessment: The nexus between energy, food, water and land use offers an approach for multi-scale, integrated assessment of this nexus. It presents a comprehensive and original method of resource accounting for integrated sustainability assessments. The approach is illustrated with three detailed case studies: the islands of Mauritius, the Indian state of Punjab, and the energy economy of South Africa. The relationships between flows of goods, services and materials in these case studies offer valuable insights. The book provides a much needed quality control on the information used in deliberative processes about policy and planning activities.
This innovative book will be of interest to researchers, students and practitioners in the fields of sustainability science, international development, industrial ecology, sustainable resource management, geography and ecological economics.
How America's global financial power was created and shaped through its special relationship with Britain
The rise of global finance in the latter half of the twentieth century has long been understood as one chapter in a larger story about the postwar growth of the United States. The Political Economy of the Special Relationship challenges this popular narrative. Revealing the Anglo-American origins of financial globalization, Jeremy Green sheds new light on Britain's hugely significant, but often overlooked, role in remaking international capitalism alongside America.
Drawing from new archival research, Green questions the conventional view of international economic history as a series of cyclical transitions among hegemonic powers. Instead, he explores the longstanding interactive role of private and public financial institutions in Britain and the United States--most notably the close links between their financial markets, central banks, and monetary and fiscal policies. He shows that America's unparalleled post-WWII financial power was facilitated, and in important ways constrained, by British capitalism, as the United States often had to work with and through British politicians, officials, and bankers to achieve its vision of a liberal economic order. Transatlantic integration and competition spurred the rise of the financial sector, an increased reliance on debt, a global easing of regulation, the ascendance of monetarism, and the transition to neoliberalism.
From the gold standard to the recent global financial crisis and beyond, The Political Economy of the Special Relationship recasts the history of global finance through the prism of Anglo-American development.
This short and accessible book is the first to focus exclusively on the inter-relation between transitional justice and rule of law reconstruction in post-conflict and post-authoritarian states. In so doing it provides a provocative reassessment of the various tangled relationships between the two fields, exploring the blind-spots, contradictions and opportunities for mutually-beneficial synergies in practice and scholarship between them. Though it is commonly assumed that transitional justice for past human rights abuses is inherently conducive to restoring the rule of law, differences in how both fields conceptualise the rule of law, the scope of transition and obligations to citizens have resulted in divergent approaches to transitional criminal trial, international criminal law, restorative justice and traditional justice mechanisms. Adopting a critical comparative approach that assesses the experiences of post-authoritarian and post-conflict polities in Latin America, Asia, Europe and Africa undergoing transitional justice and justice sector reform simultaneously, it argues that the potential benefits of transitional justice are exaggerated and urges policy-makers to rebalance the compromises inherent in transitional justice mechanisms against the foundational demands of rule of law reconstruction. This book will be of interest to scholars in the fields of transitional justice, rule of law, legal pluralism and peace-building concerned by the failure of transitional justice to leave a positive legacy to the justice system of the states where it operates.
'This is a bold and nuanced scrutiny of the international system's approach to transitional justice and the much vaunted rule of law project. Dr McAulifee should be congratulated for this well-researched book which should be a must read for not only scholars and researchers in transitional justice and peace and conflict studies, but also policy-makers in the international system.' Dr. Hakeem O. Yusuf, Senior Lecturer, University of Strathclyde and author of Transitional Justice, Judicial Accountability and the Rule of Law.
