Описание: The objective of this book is to navigate beginning graduate students in mathematics and engineering through a mature field of multiscale problems in homogenization theory and to provide an idea of its broad scope. An overview of a wide spectrum of homogenization techniques ranging from classical two-scale asymptotic expansions to Gamma convergence and the rapidly developing field of stochastic homogenization is presented. The mathematical proofs and definitions are supplemented with intuitive explanations and figures to make them easier to follow. A blend of mathematics and examples from materials science and engineering is designed to teach a mixed audience of mathematical and non-mathematical students.
Описание: Although several books and conference proceedings have already appeared dealing with either the mathematical aspects or applications of homogenization theory, there seems to be no comprehensive volume dealing with both aspects.
Описание: This book, meant for graduate students and researchers, explores the connections between numerical approximation and statistical inference from a game and decision theoretic perspective, and illustrates these interplays by addressing problems related to numerical homogenization, operator adapted wavelets, and fast solvers.

Описание: A great deal of attention was given to the so called disperse media, which, in the simplest case, are two-phase media formed by the main homogeneous material containing small foreign particles (grains, inclusions).
Описание: The series is devoted to the publication of high-level monographs which cover the whole spectrum of current nonlinear analysis and applications in various fields, such as optimization, control theory, systems theory, mechanics, engineering, and other sciences. One of its main objectives is to make available to the professional community expositions of results and foundations of methods that play an important role in both the theory and applications of nonlinear analysis. Contributions which are on the borderline of nonlinear analysis and related fields and which stimulate further research at the crossroads of these areas are particularly welcome. Описание: This monograph provides a concise overview of the main theoretical and numerical tools to solve homogenization problems in solids with finite elements. Starting from simple cases (linear thermal case) the problems are progressively complexified to finish with nonlinear problems. The book is not an overview of current research in that field, but a course book, and summarizes established knowledge in this area such that students or researchers who would like to start working on this subject will acquire the basics without any preliminary knowledge about homogenization. More specifically, the book is written with the objective of practical implementation of the methodologies in simple programs such as Matlab. The presentation is kept at a level where no deep mathematics are required.?

Описание: This monograph surveys the theory of quantitative homogenization for second-order linear elliptic systems in divergence form with rapidly oscillating periodic coefficients in a bounded domain. It begins with a review of the classical qualitative homogenization theory, and addresses the problem of convergence rates of solutions. The main body of the monograph investigates various interior and boundary regularity estimates that are uniform in the small parameter e>0. Additional topics include convergence rates for Dirichlet eigenvalues and asymptotic expansions of fundamental solutions, Green functions, and Neumann functions. The monograph is intended for advanced graduate students and researchers in the general areas of analysis and partial differential equations. It provides the reader with a clear and concise exposition of an important and currently active area of quantitative homogenization.

Описание: This volume contains the Proceedings of the Workshop on Composite Media and Homogenization Theory held in Trieste, Italy, from January 15 to 26, 1990. The workshop was organized by the International Centre for Theo- retical Physics (ICTP); part of the activity was co-sponsored by the Interna- tional School for Advanced Studies (SISSA). The workshop covered a broad range of topics in the mathematical the- ory of composite materials and homogenization. Among the specific areas of focus were homogenization of periodic and nonperiodic structures, porous me- dia, asymptotic analysis for linear and nonlinear problems, optimal bounds for effective moduli, waves in composite materials, optimal design and relaxation, random media. The workshop was actively attended by more than 100 participants from 23 countries. In the afternoon sessions 35 seminars were delivered by the participants. This volume contains research articles corresponding to 14 of the 20 invited talks which were presented. Its content will be of interest both to mathematicians working in the field and to applied mathematicians and engineers interested in modelling the behaviour of composite and random media We are pleased to express here our thanks to the ICTP for having made this workshop possible, to Ms. A. Bergamo for her continuous help during the workshop, and to Ms. C. Parma for her collaboration in editing the proceedings. Описание: Applied RVE Reconstruction and Homogenization of Heterogeneous Materials
Statistical correlation functions are a well-known class of statistical descriptors that can be used to describe the morphology and the microstructure-properties relationship. A comprehensive study has been performed for the use of these correlation functions for the reconstruction and homogenization in nano-composite materials. Correlation functions are measured from different techniques such as microscopy (SEM or TEM), small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and can be generated through Monte Carlo simulations. In this book, different experimental techniques such as SAXS and image processing are presented, which are used to measure two-point correlation function correlation for multi-phase polymer composites.
Higher order correlation functions must be calculated or measured to increase the precision of the statistical continuum approach. To achieve this aim, a new approximation methodology is utilized to obtain N-point correlation functions for multiphase heterogeneous materials. The two-point functions measured by different techniques have been exploited to reconstruct the microstructure of heterogeneous media.
Statistical continuum theory is used to predict the effective thermal conductivity and elastic modulus of polymer composites. N-point probability functions as statistical descriptors of inclusions have been exploited to solve strong contrast homogenization for effective thermal conductivity and elastic modulus properties of heterogeneous materials.
Finally, reconstructed microstructure is used to calculate effective properties and damage modeling of heterogeneous materials.
