Описание: Here's a rich pictorial review of normal and abnormal human prenatal development. For each body system or region, you'll find a brief description of the developmental plan, with key concepts and terminology, followed by discussions of histological principles, the classification of congenital defects, and basic cellular, molecular, and genetic concepts. An emphasis on morphological patterns in the embryo and fetus makes it easy to understand the structure and function of the adult body and the embryonic basis of birth defects.
Summary tables and terminology sections at the end of each chapter, plus an appendix with all major congenital defects and their embryonic basis, make it easy to review course material and prepare for the USMLE. Access the complete text and images online at studentconsult.com

Описание: The assessment and selection of oocytes and embryos is fundamental to the live birth rate data of all IVF units, the parameter that is used to gauge a clinic's success and credibility. This new atlas contains over 1000 high-quality images of oocytes, zygotes and embryos, presented with accompanying data on indications for treatment, stimulation type and duration, as well as short medical histories of each couple and final outcome of treatment. All images in the book can be downloaded from the accompanying CD-ROM. Structured on a patient-by-patient basis, the atlas describes 100 clinically documented case studies that follow the evolution of oocytes and zygotes between day two and day five. Pronuclear morphology and synchrony as well as embryo morphology are reported and described for each case. Written and produced by experienced embryologists, this practical atlas is an important resource for clinical embryologists and physicians in reproductive medicine.

Описание:
Regularly used to determine the health and viability of an embryo before in vitro fertilization, preimplantation genetic screening (PGS) and preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) have been successfully employed to test embryonic cells for chromosomal abnormalities and genes related to specific diseases. However, the complex social, ethical, legal, regulatory, and public policy aspects associated with preimplantation assessment technologies continue to evolve and represent important areas for scholarly discussion.
Human Embryos and Preimplantation Technologies: Social, Legal, and Health Policy Dimensions of Assisted Reproduction, edited by leading experts in the field, Dr. E. Scott Sills and Dr. Gianpiero Palermo, stands as the first holistic analysis of PGD and PGS as practiced and regulated worldwide. In addition to scientific and technical aspects, the book provides international perspectives on the ethical, legal, religious, policy, and social implications of assisted reproduction technologies globally, including in Africa, Asia, Europe, North and South America, and Australia.
The book begins with a thorough overview of PGS and PGD, featuring chapters on the history of these technologies, ethics, and social perspectives including PGS and the LGBT community, feminism, family dynamics, and psychological and interpersonal factors involved with assessment. Part II considers the current state of PGD and PGS in 20 different sovereign nations and religious communities, employing data on reproductive tourism and elective sex selection of human embryos. Part III concludes the book with an analysis of public policy concerns, current challenges, and future directions of PGS and PGD.
Provides in-depth discussion of PGD and PGS as practiced and regulated worldwide
Offers an accessible resource for researchers, medical professionals, patients, regulators, and policymakers seeking expert opinions on PGS and PGD
Chapters contributed by international clinicians, researchers, and thought leaders in the field of assisted reproductive technology

Описание: In recent years, the advancing science and increasing availability of assisted reproduction have given new hope to infertile couples. However, the use of IVF and ART has also led to marked increases in the number of multiple-infant live births. This poses a public health concern, as these neonates have a higher rate of pre-term delivery, compromising their survival chances and increasing their risk of lifelong disability. By optimizing the selection of gametes and embryos with high probabilities of implantation, it is possible to reduce the number of embryos transferred and, by extension, the number of high-risk multiple gestations, while maintaining or increasing pregnancy rates. Human Gametes and Preimplantation Embryos: Assessment and Diagnosis provides a broad yet concise overview of established and developing methodologies for assessment of gamete and embryo viability in assisted reproduction. This book elucidates the best practices for precisely selecting viable specimens based on morphology and cleavage rate and covers the spectrum of emerging adjunctive technologies for predicting reproductive potential. The authors present their extensive knowledge of “omics” approaches (genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics), with unbiased delineation of the associated advantages and potential pitfalls. This valuable clinical resource is well suited to infertility specialists, Ob/Gyn physicians, IVF laboratory technicians, and researchers in the fields of embryology and reproductive medicine.

Описание: This book explores the cultural history of embryology in Tibet, in culture, religion, art and literature. Filling a significant gap, this is the first in-depth exploration of Tibetan medical history in the English language. It examines embryological narratives in relation to turning points in Tibetan medical history, and its relationship with religious doctrine and practice.

Описание:
Since the first fertilization of a human egg in the laboratory in 1968, scientific and technological breakthroughs have raised ethical dilemmas and generated policy controversies on both sides of the Atlantic. Embryo, stem cell, and cloning research have provoked impassioned political debate about their religious, moral, legal, and practical implications. National governments make rules that govern the creation, destruction, and use of embryos in the laboratory—but they do so in profoundly different ways.
In Embryo Politics, Thomas Banchoff provides a comprehensive overview of political struggles aboutembryo research during four decades in four countries—the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, and France. Banchoff's book, the first of its kind, demonstrates the impact of particular national histories and institutions on very different patterns of national governance. Over time, he argues, partisan debate and religious-secular polarization have come to overshadow ethical reflection and political deliberation on the moral status of the embryo and the promise of biomedical research. Only by recovering a robust and public ethical debate will we be able to govern revolutionary life-science technologies effectively and responsibly into the future.

Описание: Biopolitics and posthumanism have been passй theories in the academy for a while now, standing on the unfashionable side of the fault line between biology and liberal thought. These days, if people invoke them, they do so a bit apologetically. But, as Ruth Miller argues, we should not be so quick to relegate these terms to the scholarly dustbin. This is because they can help to explain an increasingly important (and contested) influence in modern democratic politics-that of nostalgia. Nostalgia is another somewhat embarrassing concept for the academy. It is that wistful sense of longing for an imaginary and unitary past that leads to an impossible future. And, moreover for this book, it is ordinarily considered "bad" for democracy. But, again, Miller says, not so fast. As she argues in this book, nostalgia is the mode of engagement with the world that allows thought and life to coexist, productively, within democratic politics. Miller demonstrates her theory by looking at nostalgia as a nonhuman mode of "thought" embedded in biopolitical reproduction. To put this another way, she looks at mass democracy as a classically nonhuman affair and nostalgic, nonhuman reproduction as the political activity that makes this democracy happen. To illustrate, Miller draws on the politics surrounding embryos and the modernization of the Turkish alphabet. Situating this argument in feminist theories of biopolitics, this unusual and erudite book demonstrates that nostalgia is not as detrimental to democratic engagement as scholars have claimed.
