Описание: How can we uncover the traces of oral culture in medieval sources when the oral matter we possess survives only in written form? Is it the case that only the written persists while the oral is lost? What was the status of orality in medieval society? The studies in this volume (five chapters in French and two in English) examine the links between the oral and the written traditions in medieval literature. They do this by means of the analysis of literary sources from very diverse backgrounds, both geographically and linguistically speaking: the investigation ranges from medieval Spain, through the Byzantine Empire and the Crusader states, to late medieval and early modern Turkey. This interdisciplinary enquiry by an international group of scholars enables us to define the modes of transmission of medieval texts and how they were memorized as well as to decipher how they were read and appropriated. In addition, the book suggests a methodological basis for research into indices of orality and for analysis of the intertextual links between literary works. This enquiry, undertaken within the framework of the international Homo Legens project, provides an efficacious tool for the study of the practices of reading and writing.

Описание: Nietzsche’s late works are brilliant and uncompromising, and stand as monuments to his lucidity, rigour, and style. This volume combines, for the first time in English, five of these works: The Antichrist, Ecce Homo, Twilight of the Idols, Nietzsche contra Wagner, and The Case of Wagner. Here, Nietzsche takes on some of his greatest adversaries: traditional religion, contemporary culture, and above all his one-time hero, the composer Richard Wagner. His writing is simultaneously critical and creative, putting into practice his alternative philosophical vision, which, after more than a hundred years, still retains its startling novelty and audacity. These new translations aim to capture something of the style and rhythm of the original German, so that the reader can get a sense of Nietzsche as not just a philosopher but also a consummate artist, capable of ‘dancing with his pen’, and as untimely as he claims to be.
Описание: It is generally accepted that the earliest human ancestors grew more like apes than like humans today. If they did so, and we are now different, when, how and
why did our modern growth patterns evolve? This book focuses on species within the genus Homo to investigate the evolutionary origins of characteristic human patterns and rates of
craniofacial and postcranial growth and development, and to explore unique ontogenetic patterns within each fossil
species. Experts examine growth patterns found within available Plio-Pleistocene hominid samples, and analyse variation in ontogenetic patterns and rates of development in recent
modern humans in order to provide a comparative context for fossil hominid studies.
Presenting studies of some of the newest juvenile fossil specimens and information on
Homo antecessor, the newest species assigned to the genus, this book will provide a rich data source with which anthropologists and evolutionary biologists can address the questions
Описание: Mitochondrial DNA is one of the most explored genetic systems because of what it can tell us about the human past. This volume takes a unique perspective,
presenting the disparate strands that must be tied together to exploit this system. From molecular biology to anthropolo
y, statistics to ancient DNA, this first volume of three presents the global picture of human mitochondrial DNA variation.
It takes a critical look at the field, flagging the
problems, as well as the successes, and always placing the mitochondrial phylogeny centre stage.
