"The Paulist Press' recent 60-volume series on the Western mystics is to my mind the most hopeful sign in American publishing." Kenneth L. Woodward Religion Editor of Newsweek Magazine in Publishers Weekly Bonaventure-The Soul's Journey into God, The Tree of Life, The Life of St. Francis translation and introduction by Ewert Cousins, preface by Ignatius Brady, O.F.M. "But if you wish to know how these things come about ask grace not instruction, desire not understanding, the groaning of prayer not diligent reading, the Spouse not the teacher, God not man, darkness not clarity, not light but the fire that totally enflames and carries us into God by ecstatic unctions and burning affections. This fire is God and his furnace is in Jerusalem..." Bonaventure, 1217-1274 Long before Bonaventure was called "The Prince of Mystics" by Leo XIII or "The Seraphic Doctor" by John Gerson, he was known throughout the Christian world as "The Devout Teacher." Professor Ewert Cousins says in his introduction, "In the history of Western Spirituality, Bonaventure holds a central and pivotal position. The 13th century friar, professor at the University of Paris, minister general of the Franciscan Order, cardinal and advisor to popes, played a major role in the spiritual ferment of the high Middle Ages...when Islamic, Jewish and Christian spirituality were flourishing-he produced one of the richest syntheses of Christian spirituality. Although cosmic in its scope, it was distinctively Christian in its content, grounded in the doctrine of the Trinity and devotion to the humanity of Christ. Within Christianity he achieved a striking integration of Eastern and Western elements." The three works contained in this volume offer the core of his vision. In The Soul's Journey into God, considered Bonaventure's masterpiece, he takes the six-winged Seraph as the symbol for the six stages of contemplation in which the created world is seen as a reflection of God. The Tree of Life is a simple meditation on the life of Jesus, "based on the Gospel accounts" in which "Christ is seen as the Tree of Life on whose branches blossom such virtues as humility, piety, patience, constancy and justice." The Life of St. Francis was the official biography commissioned by the Franciscan Order in 1260. The editor of this volume, Dr. Ewert Cousins, is Professor of Theology, Fordham University and Visiting Professor, Columbia University. He is Director of the Spirituality Graduate Program at Fordham. Ignatius Brady, O.F.M., who wrote the preface to this volume, is one of the world's leading authorities on Bonaventure and early Franciscan spirituality. He is Prefect of the Theology Section of the Franciscan research center, Collegio S. Bonaventura at Grottaferrata near Rome.

Описание: Christians often assume too sharp a distinction between the Old and New Testaments, argues preacher, author, and teacher J. Ellsworth Kalas. They are too quick to view the Old Testament as a strict book of laws and commandments and the New Testament as a witness to grace. The God of the Old Testament is misperceived as a God of wrath and...
Описание: The doctrine of atonement has received little attention in Orthodox Christian circles since the work of Fr Georges Florovsky, who labored to clarify and promulgate the Orthodox teaching on atonement on the basis of his theological leitmotifs of neo-patristic synthesis and encounter with the West.

Описание: This work examines the theological relationship between creation and creativity in the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. It does so by bringing together a synthesis of various disciplines and perspectives to the creativity of J.R.R. Tolkien. Hart and Khovacs provide a fresh reading of these important themes in Tolkien, and the result captures the multi-faceted nature of Tolkien's own vivid theology and literary imagination.

Описание:
This book pays special attention to the hermeneutical location where the fig-tree story appears in Mark 11; it is situated between Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem and his "Temple incident" in Mark 11. The fig-tree story plays a pivotal role in understanding the stories immediatlely preceding and following it. It reverses the mode of Jesus’ entry from being triumphal to untriumphal, and convinces the first Markan readers to feel at ease in confronting Jesus’ outrage in the Temple. The way in which Jesus entered Jerusalem contradicts the common description of the entry as a triumphant one. Additionally, the story finds a proper solution to the problem of Jesus’ actions in the Temple being shockingly in contrast to his overall character as revealed through the Markan Gospel.

Find out why Yeshua was resurrected the third day & why He has been gone for nearly two thousand years
Here's a study sample: The withered fig tree (p. 296)
By disobeying God, Adam and Eve essentially rejected God as their KING. All curses came upon them as they turned away from His Holy Spirit that gave them life. They covered their spiritual nakedness with fig leaves from the tree of knowledge of good and evil.So the green fig leaf became the green fig leaf of shame ... Mark 11:1-22, we see that Yeshua entered Jerusalem riding upon the colt of a donkey.... Immediately after this, Yeshua went to "Bethany." If you can believe another astonishing detail "Bethany" means"House of Figs " On the morrow, when Yeshua was hungry, He came upon the fig tree bearing only the green leaves and no fruit, so He spoke the Word and cursed the fig tree because the time of figs was not yet. This is a very significant phrase, as we will see. When Yeshua returns from Heaven and restores all things, the curses of the fig tree of Eden will be cast off like untimely figs and it will no longer be bearing the curse of Eden. So the time of figs to bud and fruit again without the curse will be at hand when Messiah the LORD is about to appear on the earth Yeshua said that when we see the fig tree bud, the Kingdom of God is nigh at hand ...
... Remember that God was the Master in His Garden. The fig leaves covered the shame of Adam and Eve after they ate the fruit from this tree. So Yeshua's fig tree in Bethany was only bearing leaves and no fruit was on it because Adam and Eve symbolically had already eaten the fruit from it So now Yeshua the LORD made the leaves and tree to wither to its roots, so it would never bear fruit again Yeshua said, "No man eat fruit of thee hereafter forever " He was here to remove the curse, once and for all, from them eating the forbidden fruit from the fig tree of the knowledge of good and evil. It is interesting that when Yeshua cursed the fig tree, His disciples heard it....
Follow the intriguing, deep studies leading from one revelation to another until you see the Testimony of the two witnesses unveiled, proving to the world that there is a God in Israel. The author begins on Holy Mount Moriah in Jerusalem, and ends on the real Mount Sinai. There may never be another book like it.
Описание: The overall aim of this investigation of Mark 11.12-14, 20ff. is to ascertain the attitude to the Temple taken by the author of the earliest Gospel and his community. More specifically, it is a meticulous study of the most curious of all the Synoptic miracle-stories, in which the place of the story within the Markan redaction and subsequently in the Synoptic Gospels is explored. The study also entails a detailed exploration of the story's origin, background and Sitz in Leben prior to Mark, involving thorough consideration of the Old Testament and Jewish background of its motifs.
