Описание:
Providing a capstone to Philip Selznick's influential body of scholarly work, A Humanist Science insightfully brings to light the value-centered nature of the social sciences. The work clearly challenges the supposed separation of fact and value, and argues that human values belong to the world of fact and are the source of the ideals that govern social and political institutions. By demonstrating the close connection between the social sciences and the humanities, Selznick reveals how the methods of the social sciences highlight and enrich the study of such values as well-being, prosperity, rationality, and self-government.
The book moves from the animating principles that make up the humanist tradition to the values that are central to the social sciences, analyzing the core teachings of these disciplines with respect to the moral issues at stake. Throughout the work, Selznick calls attention to the conditions that affect the emergence, realization, and decline of human values, offering a valuable resource for scholars and students of law, sociology, political science, and philosophy.

Описание: This book offers the first synthetic interpretation of the humanist movement in Renaissance Florence in more than fifty years. Brian Jeffrey Maxson shows how this network of humanists enabled the launch of a cultural movement that established Florence as the pre-eminent center of learning in Italy, and that spread beyond Italy to the rest of Europe.
Long overshadowed by Luther and Calvin, Philipp Melanchthon (14971560) is one of the most important figures in the Protestant Reformation and had profound effect on Western church history. This book gives the most detailed English-language biographical treatment of Melanchthon to date, moving from his historical context and personal origins, through his childhood, education, and early career at Wittenberg during the dramatic events at the dawn of the Reformation (14971524).
Establishing the deep geopolitical and religious context of Melanchthons early life, the volume then follows Melanchthon to the great halls of humanist learning at Heidelberg and Tbingen, where his studies and teaching career began and his faith was richly fostered. The pivotal moment comes in his appointment to the chair of Greek in Wittenberg where Melanchthon became a great ally and supporter of Martin Luther.
Melanchthons role as key player in the advocacy for reform expanded through his involvement in the Leipzig Disputation, his visible representation of the evangelical cause in Wittenberg during Luthers absence at Worms and the Wartburg, and his struggle with the radical wing. The volume closes by looking ahead to Melanchthons contribution to the Augsburg Confession of 1530.
