Описание: In Frantz Fanon and Emancipatory Social Theory: A View from the Wretched , Dustin J. Byrd and Seyed Javad Miri bring together a collection of essays by a variety of scholars who explore the lasting influence of Frantz Fanon, psychiatrist, revolutionary, and social theorist. Fanon’s work not only gave voice to the “wretched” in the Algerian War of Independence (1954-1962), but also shaped the radical resistance to colonialism, empire, and racism throughout much of the world. His seminal works, such as Black Skin, White Masks , and The Wretched of the Earth , were read by The Black Panther Party in the United States, anti-imperialists in Africa and Asia, and anti-monarchist revolutionaries in the Middle East. Today, many revolutionaries and scholars have returned to Fanon’s work, as it continues to shed light on the nature of colonial domination, racism, and class oppression. Contributors include: Syed Farid Alatas, Rose Brewer, Dustin J. Byrd, Sean Chabot, Richard Curtis, Nigel C. Gibson, Ali Harfouch, Timothy Kerswell, Seyed Javad Miri, Mumia Abu-Jamal, Pramod K. Nayar, Elena Flores Ruiz, Majid Sharifi, Mohamed Imran Mohamed Taib and Esmaeil Zeiny.

Описание:

Frantz Fanon's (1925-61) political impact is difficult to overestimate. His anti-colonialist, philosophical and revolutionary writings were among the most influential of the twentieth century. The political essays, articles and notes published in Alienation and Freedom: The Political Writings cover the most active period of his life, from the publication of White Skin, Black Masks in 1952 - when he was twenty-eight years old - to that of The Wretched of the Earth, the appearance of which in 1961 coincided, give or take a few days, with the date of his death from leukaemia at the age of thirty-six.

These political writings represent the sheer breadth and diversity of Fanon's work and this volume is original in that it contains his earliest works to survive, the plays The Drowning Eye and Parallel Hands, which expose an early preoccupation with identity and socio-political consciousness. His writings from Algeria are the most politicised however and are notable for their inflection with Fanon's support for the country's fight against French colonial rule. Indeed, as his role in treating both French and Algerian soldiers grew evermore untenable, his words became more impassioned and represent his decision to cast off his assimilationist upbringing and dedicate himself to revolution.

The insights these works provide give a new depth and complexity to our understanding of Fanon's entire oeuvre and reveal how his powerful thinking about race, identity and activism remain pertinent to modern society. Shedding new light on the work of a major twentieth-century philosopher, this disruptive and moving work will shape how we look at the world.

Описание:

Since the publication of The Wretched of the Earth in 1961, Fanon's work has been deeply significant for successive generations of intellectuals-for anti-colonial and civil rights activists in the 60s and 70s, for those working in postcolonial studies from the 80s to the present day, and currently for specialists of French and North African history, of colonial psychiatry, and for all those who work with conflicts of identity in postcolonial societies.

Frantz Fanon is regarded as a foundational thinker of Postcolonial Studies, bringing together the analysis of colonialism from an objective, historical perspective and an interrogation of its subjective effects on colonizer and colonized alike. This book furthers his powerful intervention into how we think about identity, race and activism and provides a unique insight into Fanon's literary works and psychiatric, philosophical and historical theories.

Alienation and Freedom offers a remarkable opportunity to discover a range of unknown literary, psychiatric, and political works by Fanon, many of which were never published before, and throws new light on the thinking of a major 20th-century philosopher whose disruptive and moving work continues to shape how we look at the world.

*** Awarded First Place in the 2015 AJN Book of the Year Award in two categories - "History and Public Policy" and "Professional Issues" ***

This anthology presents the philosophical and practice perspectives of nurse scholars whose works center on promoting nursing research, practice, and education within frameworks of social justice and critical theories. Social justice nursing is defined by the editors as nursing practice that is emancipatory and rests on the principle of praxis which is practice aimed at attaining social justice goals and outcomes that improve health experiences and conditions of individuals, their communities, and society. There is a lack in the nursing discipline of resources that contain praxis approaches and there is a need for new concepts, models, and theories that could encompass scholarship and practice aimed at purposive reformation of nursing, other health professions, and health care systems. Chapters bridge critical theoretical frameworks and nursing science in ways that are understandable and useful for practicing nurses and other health professionals in clinical settings, in academia, and in research.

In this book, nurses' ideas and knowledge development efforts are not limited to problems and solutions emerging from the dominant discourse or traditions. The authors offer innovative ways to work towards establishing alternative forms of knowledge, capable of capturing both the roots and complexity of contemporary problems as distributed across a diversity of people and communities. It fills a significant gap in the literature and makes an exceptional contribution as a collection of new writings from some of the foremost nursing scholars whose works are informed by critical frameworks.

Robber Barons and Wretched Refuse: Ethnic and Class Dynamics during the Era of American Industrialization

Описание:

Robber Barons and Wretched Refuse explores the connection between the so-called robber barons who led American big businesses during the Gilded Age and Progressive Era and the immigrants who comprised many of their workforces. As Robert F. Zeidel argues, attribution of industrial-era class conflict to an "alien" presence supplements nativism--a sociocultural negativity towards foreign-born residents--as a reason for Americans' dislike and distrust of immigrants. And in the era of American industrialization, employers both relied on imigrants to meet their growing labor needs and blamed them for the frequently violent workplace contention of the time.

Through a sweeping narrative of the time, Zeidel uncovers the connection of immigrants to radical "isms" that gave rise to widespread notions of alien subversives whose presence threatened America's domestic tranquility and the well-being of its residents. Employers, rather than looking at their own practices for causes of workplace conflict, wontedly attributed strikes and other unrest to aliens who either spread pernicious "foreign" doctrines or fell victim to their siren messages. These characterizations transcended nationality or ethnic group, applying at different times to all foreign-born workers.

Zeidel concludes that, ironically, stigmatizing immigrants as subversives contributed to the passage of the Quota Acts, which effectively stemmed the flow of wanted foreign workers. Post-war employers argued for preserving America's traditional open door, but the negativity which they had assigned to foreign workers contributed to its closing.

Описание:

Frantz Fanon's career as a psychiatrist had a crucial impact upon his thinking as an anti-colonialist thinker and activist. Indeed, much of the iconic writing in The Wretched of the Earth is shaped by his powerful experiences as a young doctor working in hospitals in France, Algeria and Tunisia.

The writing collected here, written during his professional career as a neuro-psychiatrist between 1951 and 1960 and in parallel to his political work, reveals much about how Fanon's thought developed. The trajectory of this volume shows that for him, it was increasingly impossible to separate a human's surrounding culture from their psychopathology, and most essentially, from their development of mental illness. Ethnopsychiatry was influenced by its surroundings, and in Algeria, Fanon noted that they were decidedly colonial, arguing that for his North African and largely Muslim patients, treatment within the standard Eurocentric psychiatric-hospital system was therefore ineffective. For Fanon then, his psychiatric practice represented only part of a much larger struggle.

Although he enjoyed the life of a revolutionary, an ambassador and a journalist, as soon as freedom was won, Frantz Fanon's plan was to devote the next part of his life to psychiatric work and the resolution of psychiatry's institutional and ethnocultural problems. This volume elucidates then, how it is completely impossible to separate his political, revolutionary and literary lives from the psychiatric practice and writings that indelibly shaped his thinking about oppression, alienation and the search for freedom.
