Numerical simulation is a technique of major importance in various technical and scientific fields. Whilst engineering curricula now include training courses dedicated to it, numerical simulation is still not well-known in some economic sectors, and even less so among the general public.
Simulation involves the mathematical modeling of the real world, coupled with the computing power offered by modern technology. Designed to perform virtual experiments, digital simulation can be considered as an "art of prediction".
Embellished with a rich iconography and based on the testimony of researchers and engineers, this book shines a light on this little-known art. It is the second of two volumes and gives examples of the uses of numerical simulation in various scientific and technical fields: agriculture, industry, Earth and universe sciences, meteorology and climate studies, energy, biomechanics and human and social sciences.

Описание:
The series is devoted to the publication of high-level monographs and specialized graduate texts which cover the modern mathematical foundations behind computational science and its applications in physical and life sciences, and in engineering.
One of its main objectives is to make available to the professional community expositions of results and in-depth presentation of techniques that are of current importance to technological and practical applications.
Описание: A concise 2006 introduction to key concepts and tools of statistical mechanics. Self-contained, it combines analytical and numerical techniques, and presents a diverse range of applications. Built on many years` teaching experience, this textbook is ideal for advanced students across the physical sciences.
Описание: This volume presents an overview of the phase transitions that occur in a variety of soft-matter systems, such as: colloidal suspensions of spherical or rod-like particles and their mixtures; directed polymers and polymer blends; colloid-polymer mixtures; and liquid-forming mesogens.

Описание: The third edition of this book combines physical modeling of mechatronic systems with precise numerical simulation using the Finite Element method. Includes enhanced discussion of principles and methods, and new chapters on acoustic fields and flow fields.
Описание: The GAMM-Commi ttee for Numerical Methods in Fluid Mechanics (GAMM-Fachausschuss fur Numerische Methoden in der Stromungsmechanik) has sponsored the organization of a GAMM Workshop dedicated to the numerical simulation of three- dimensional incompressible unsteady viscous laminar flows to test Navier-Stokes solvers. The Workshop was held in Paris from June 12th to June 14th, 1991 at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Arts et Metiers. Two test problems were set up. The first one is the flow in a driven-lid parallelepipedic cavity at Re = 3200 . The second problem is a flow around a prolate spheroid at incidence. These problems are challenging as fully transient solutions are expected to show up. The difficulties for meaningful calculations come from both space and temporal discretizations which have to be sufficiently accurate to resol ve detailed structures like Taylor-Gortler-like vortices and the appropriate time development. Several research teams from academia and industry tackled the tests using different formulations (veloci ty-pressure, vortici ty- velocity), different numerical methods (finite differences, finite volumes, finite elements), various solution algorithms (splitting, coupled, ... ), various solvers (direct, iterative, semi-iterative) with preconditioners or other numerical speed-up procedures. The results show some scatter and achieve different levels of efficiency. The Workshop was attended by about 25 scientists and drove much interaction between the participants. The contributions in these proceedings are presented in alphabetical order according to the first author, first for the cavi ty problem and then for the prolate spheroid problem. No definite conclusions about benchmark solutions can be drawn.

Direct Numerical Simulation and Multiscale Modelling provides a unified description of DNS, LES and RANS in the context of broader modelling and simulation practice. The relevance of these techniques to flow, turbulence, combustion and multiphysics is explained to help readers apply them to a wide range of research topics.
Introductory sections help readers get up to speed with the theories of turbulence, combustion, and multiphysics, along with the basics of simulation and modelling. This is followed by thorough treatments of the numerical methods, boundary conditions, and specific modelling approaches for different purposes. Applications in fields including aerospace, biomedical, and chemical engineering are investigated where appropriate.
This is the ideal guide for readers interested in direct numerical simulation, or modelling/simulation of turbulence more generally, who need an overview of the methods available and advice on how to select and implement the correct one.
