Описание: When financial crises initiated a global recession in 2008, massive public debt forced policymakers in the developed world to impose tough fiscal consolidations to counter growing deficits. The most effective solutions, however, were often the ones most counterintuitive and least politically feasible, catching policymakers in a fiscal paradox.

Описание:
This book examines the domestic electoral consequences of the economic and financial crisis in Europe, particularly in those countries where the crisis manifested itself more devastatingly: the Southern European countries of Greece, Italy, Portugal, and Spain, as well as Iceland and Ireland. On the surface, the electoral consequences of the crisis seem largely similar, having resulted, in these countries, in large electoral losses for incumbents, as the most elementary versions of "economic voting" theory would have us expect. However, behind this fundamental similarity, important differences emerge. Whilst in some cases, on the basis of post-election surveys, it is possible to see that the "crisis elections" followed a previous pattern of performance-oriented voters, with no major changes either in known predictors of electoral choices or in basic party system properties, other elections brought the emergence of new parties, new issues and cleavages, altering patterns of political competition.
By examining these different outcomes by comparing the "crisis elections" with previous ones, this book takes into account their timing relative to different stages of crisis. It also scrutinises party strategies and campaign dynamics, particularly as governments attempted (and sometimes succeeded) in framing events and proposals so as to apportion responsibility for economic outcomes.
This book was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Elections, Public Opinion and Parties.

A timely and incisive look at austerity measures that succeed--and those that don't
Fiscal austerity is hugely controversial. Opponents argue that it can trigger downward growth spirals and become self-defeating. Supporters argue that budget deficits have to be tackled aggressively at all times and at all costs. In this masterful book, three of today's leading policy experts cut through the political noise to demonstrate that there is not one type of austerity but many.
Looking at thousands of fiscal measures adopted by sixteen advanced economies since the late 1970s, Austerity assesses the relative effectiveness of tax increases and spending cuts at reducing debt. It shows that spending cuts have much smaller costs in terms of output losses than tax increases. Spending cuts can sometimes be associated with output gains in the case of expansionary austerity and are much more successful than tax increases at reducing the growth of debt. The authors also show that austerity is not necessarily the kiss of death for political careers as is often believed, and provide new insights into the recent cases of European austerity after the financial crisis.
Bringing needed clarity to one of today's most challenging subjects, Austerity charts a sensible approach based on data analysis rather than ideology.

Описание: This book considers the relationship between public spending and public deficit and the varying successes and difficulties governments have had in recent years to balance the two. As the fiscal crash of 2007/8 turned into the Great Recession and tax revenues tumbled, public finances across the UK, the USA and Europe plunged into deficit. Controversial attempts by governments to balance their budgets, commonly described as austerity by critics, had mixed success, politically and economically. Michael Burton outlines how politicians tackled the worst economic downturn in over half a century, drawing on previous examples of deficit-reduction to see how governments managed public finances in recessions and where austerity worked and where it failed. This two-part book, which for the first time provides an historical context to austerity, analyses firstly deficit-reduction in the UK in the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s and 2010-2016, and then looks at case studies in Europe, the USA, Canada and Asia Pacific. The author concludes that with the ageing population placing greater pressure through health and pensions on the public finances of the developed world, politicians and their electorates will have to learn to live long-term with austerity.

Описание:
Austerity dominated the policy agenda in the past decade. Although it temporarily ended owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, a return to harsh cutbacks in the future cannot be ruled out.
In this incisive analysis, Diane Perrons shows that, while austerity policies have devastating effects on many people's lives, their gendered dynamics are particularly conspicuous: budget cuts have been overwhelmingly aimed at services that support women. She shows how the gender aspects of this economic and social catastrophe intersected with a range of other factors - running from social class, race, and ethnicity, to citizenship status, dis(ability) and geographical location. This made the experience of austerity very different for different groups - and highly unjust. Not only that, but it undermined responses to COVID-19.
She finishes by critiquing the justifications for austerity policies and asking whether there are compelling alternatives that can inform how we reinvigorate our economy and society after the pandemic and help us avoid a return to austerity. This compelling book will be essential reading for activists, policymakers and students of feminist political economy everywhere.
