Описание:

When American evangelicals flocked to Latin America, Africa, Asia, and Eastern Europe in the late twentieth century to fulfill their Biblical mandate for global evangelism, their experiences abroad led them to engage more deeply in foreign policy activism at home. Lauren Frances Turek tracks these trends and illuminates the complex and significant ways in which religion shaped Americas role in the late-Cold War world. In To Bring the Good News to All Nations, she examines the growth and influence of Christian foreign policy lobbying groups in the United States beginning in the 1970s, assesses the effectiveness of Christian efforts to attain foreign aid for favored regimes, and considers how those same groups promoted the imposition of economic and diplomatic sanctions on those nations that stifled evangelism.

Using archival materials from both religious and government sources, To Bring the Good News to All Nations links the development of evangelical foreign policy lobbying to the overseas missionary agenda. Tureks case studies--Guatemala, South Africa, and the Soviet Union--reveal the extent of Christian influence on American foreign policy from the late 1970s through the 1990s. Evangelical policy work also reshaped the lives of Christians overseas and contributed to a reorientation of U.S. human rights policy. Efforts to promote global evangelism and support foreign brethren led activists to push Congress to grant aid to favored, yet repressive, regimes in countries such as Guatemala while imposing economic and diplomatic sanctions on nations that persecuted Christians, such as the Soviet Union. This advocacy shifted the definitions and priorities of U.S. human rights policies with lasting repercussions that can be traced into the twenty-first century.

Описание:

A photographic journey into the contradictions of Siberia--its pristine wilderness and despoiled landscapes, its pockets of wealth and abandoned cultural centers

Growing up near Washington DC at the end of the Cold War, New York-based photographer Michael Turek (born 1982) has always been drawn to Russia as a taboo, forbidden place. This project began in the winter of 2016 when he joined award-winning British writer Sophy Roberts as she pursued a three-year search for a historic piano in Siberia; he traveled to the region another five times, exploring the vast territory east of the Ural Mountains all the way to the Pacific.

Turek's images record a constant tension--sometimes bizarre, often unsettling--between desecrated landscapes alongside pristine wildernesses; between the lives of indigenous people and modern Russians; between worn-out infrastructure and abandoned towns juxtaposed with gleaming new cities pumping gas and oil. The journey takes him deeper and deeper into small towns and villages, into the arsenic-green corridors of Khrushchev apartment blocks. The photographs have a slowness and a stillness to them. Each one is a fragment of a conversation, a moment of genuine intimacy between subject and photographer.

Описание: More brutal, more depraved, and more dangerous than any adversary private detective Charlie Komensky has ever encountered, this sadist's reach is pervasive and global. Unwatched, he will rape or kill the most innocent. Undeterred, he will gather unsuspecting followers by the thousands. Unstopped, he will destroy the oldest and most powerful of institutions. When Charlie's fianc e Linda is arrested for domestic terrorism, failing to prove her innocence draws him into a nightmare of death and perversion where Linda isn't the sweet girl he knew. It's a world of secret sex clubs, covert militias and high-tech weapons beyond his imagination; one where Charlie hangs onto moral high ground by his fingertips. No other case has led Charlie into sexier situations, faster action, more thrills, or higher stakes. Is the end near for Charlie and Linda-and maybe for society as we know it?

Описание: The most gruesome and unthinkable murders keep Private Detective Charlie Komensky on the move through territory far beyond his geographic comfort zone in this second novel and third case of the series. The discovery of a body disfigured by fire and smoke inside an old steam engine interrupts Charlie's vacation, and almost destroys his relationship with his capable but frustrated fianc e. As Linda threatens to break off the relationship completely, Charlie may stray from it with the young and willing female investigator assigned to the case. At the same time, shadowy criminal elements conspire to take advantage of Charlie's distractions, and the grotesque murders mount up. Always on the financial ropes, Charlie tries to escape being shot, electrocuted, and framed for attempted murder while uncovering clues that lead to an old diamond heist and his own blocked memory. Confused and off his game, worried about Linda and his business reputation, he might not escape the mind-changing drug that could put him at the mercy of the mysterious Georgio and force him to face long forgotten memories about his trusted friends, and about the judge who has been his mentor and male role model since his father was killed by a mob bullet. Tortured by the truth, Charlie must swallow his moral indignation and use the judge's connections to solve the case while trying to save the diamonds, his girl, his police contacts, his detective business, and maybe his own sanity.
