Описание: Based on papers presented at the International Symposium on Sexual Reproduction in Higher Plants, this volume covers the topics: micro- and macrosporogenesis, the activation and recognition of mature pollen, pollen germination and tube emission in vivo and in vitro, pollen and pollen tube cytoskeleton, stigma and style morphology, pollen/stigma interactions, incompatibility mechanisms and gene expression. The reinvestigation of classical topics using modern methods such as immunofluorescence, micromanipulation, freeze-substitution, electron microscopy, etc., is the common basis of all results presented. Especially applied aspects of sexual reproduction important e.g. for crop improvement, are discussed in detail.

Описание: The Predominance of species exhibiting genic male sterility and of species crosses exhibiting gene-cytoplasmic male sterility is due to the fact that for the male sterility expression in the former, mutation of nuclear genes is required, but in the latter, mutations of both nuclear and cytoplasmic genes are necessary.
Описание: In the third edition of her successful textbook, Paula Rudall provides a comprehensive yet succinct introduction to the anatomy of flowering plants. Thoroughly revised and updated throughout, the book covers all aspects of comparative plant structure and development, arranged in a series of chapters on the stem, root, leaf, flower, seed and fruit. Internal structures are described using magnification aids from the simple hand-lens to the electron microscope. Numerous references to recent topical literature are included, and new illustrations reflect a wide range of flowering plant species. The phylogenetic context of plant names has also been updated as a result of improved understanding of the relationships among flowering plants. This clearly written text is ideal for students studying a wide range of courses in botany and plant science, and is also an excellent resource for professional and amateur horticulturists.

Описание:
Arsenic is likely the most talked-about metalloid in the modern world because of its toxic effects on both animal and plants. Further, arsenic pollution is now producing negative impacts on food security, especially in many south Asian countries. Since plants are a major food source, their adaptation to As-rich environments is essential, as is being informed about recent findings on multifarious aspects of the mechanisms of arsenic toxicity and tolerance in plants. Although numerous research works and review articles have been published in journals, annual reviews and as book chapters, to date there has been no comprehensive book on this topic.
This book contains 19 informative chapters on arsenic chemistry, plant uptake, toxicity and tolerance mechanisms, as well as approaches to mitigation. Readers will be introduced to the latest findings on plant responses to arsenic toxicity, various tolerance mechanisms, and remediation techniques. As such, the book offers a timely and valuable resource for a broad audience, including plant scientists, soil scientists, environmental scientists, agronomists, botanists and molecular biologists.

Описание: Until the 1930s biological science had not paid sufficient attention to the excretory function of plants. The interest in the ability of plants to release various compounds arose in connection with two discoveries. In 1930, the embryologist Boris Tokin reported that in plant excreta there are substances which he called "phytoncides," because they possessed an antimicrobial activity. Later, Hans Molisch (1937), based on numerous observations, concluded that chemicals released by plants can participate in a competition between plants in phytocenosis. At the same time the first monograph Die Stoffausscheidung der hoheren Pflanzen by Frey-Wyssling (1935) appeared, in which the excretory function of plants was considered, mainly from the anatomo-physiological viewpoint. Almost half a century after these fundamental works, the excretion by plants was studied in various fields of biology: plant anatomy and cytology, biocenol- ogy, plant immunology, and pharmacology. Anatomical and cytological data dealing with plant secretory structures are reviewed in detail in some monographs (Schnepf 1969; Vasilyev 1977; Fahn 1979; Buvat 1989; Denisova 1989). Many publications are devoted to the role of plant excreta in phytocenosis, mainly in connection with allelopathic inter- actions. They are summarized in the books of Chernobrivenko (1956), Grodzin- skii (1965, 1991), Ivanov (1973), Rice (1974, 1984), Kolesnichenko (1976).

Описание: Fertilization in higher plants is a complex process consisting of two events, the fusion of the egg with one sperm cell resulting in the diploid zygote, and the fusion of embryosac nuclei with another sperm cell, leading to a triploid endosperm.
