Описание:

Two outstanding accounts of the Indian Mutiny written by women

This special Leonaur edition contains two accounts of the Indian Mutiny of 1857 as it was experienced by women whose lives were violently disrupted. Elizabeth Wagentreiber was the youngest daughter of Colonel James Skinner of the famous cavalry regiment 'Skinner's Horse'. She had originally married a Captain Radclyffe Haldane, an officer of Skinner's Horse who was killed at the Battle of Chillianwallah during the Second Anglo-Sikh War. She subsequently married George Wagentreiber. And in the Spring of 1857 the couple were living in the civilian lines at Delhi when the Indian Mutiny broke out in the Bengal Army and reports arrived that the native cavalry was running amok in the city, slaughtering Europeans. Fearful for their lives the couple escaped with their children and the harrowing account of their time as fugitives makes compelling reading. Mrs Elizabeth McMullin Muter was married to a captain of the 1st Battalion 60th King's Royal Rifles stationed in Meerut, a few hours travel east of Delhi, when the mutiny among the sepoys of the garrison broke out there on Sunday morning of May 10th, 1857. Elizabeth Muter graphically describes the horrors of those first days of the conflict from the perspective of the wives of officers who were set adrift in times of peril and uncertainty as their husbands left them to fight. This book also contains some campaign recollections by Captain Muter.

Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.

Описание: A cavalry regiment during the Victorian Age

This is the third volume in C. R. B. Barrett's monumental history of a famous cavalry regiment of the British Army-the 7th (Queen's Own) Hussars. Volume one deals with the regiment's time as dragoons principally during the continental wars of the eighteenth century, the second volume concerns the Napoleonic Wars and the 7th's service in Spain and in the Waterloo campaign, in this third volume the regiment naturally is shouldering its share of the mostly small campaigns and battles that shaped the era best defines the British Empire during Queen Victoria's long reign. So the history recounts many varied incidents during the Canadian Rebellion, the Indian Mutiny, in the Sudan, against the Matabeles, in Mashonaland and during the Great Boer War. The fourth volume published by Leonaur in this matching set-available in soft and hard cover with dust jacket-covers the uniform, weapons and equipment of these cavalrymen throughout their history.

Описание: The Mutiny at the Margins series takes a fresh look at the Revolt of 1857 from a variety of original and unusual perspectives, focusing in particular on neglected socially marginal groups and geographic areas which have hitherto tended to be unrepresented in studies of this cataclysmic event in British imperial and Indian historiography.

Military Aspects of the Indian Uprising (Volume 4) deals with how battles were won and lost and how the army re-organised after the revolt. It also touches on the thorny issue of how to define the events of 1857-as a rebellion, a national uprising or a small war of the kind experienced in many colonial states.

Описание: This book is for anyone seeking an understanding of the 2016 US presidential election and its fallout. It uses analogies from anti-discrimination law that Americans intuitively understand to discuss voting, and asks the question: do Americans have a legal obligation not to racially discriminate in the privacy of the ballot box?

Описание: The global legacy of mutiny and revolution on the high seas.

Mutiny tore like wildfire through the wooden warships of the age of revolution. While commoners across Europe laid siege to the nobility and enslaved workers put the torch to plantation islands, out on the oceans, naval seamen by the tens of thousands turned their guns on the quarterdeck and overthrew the absolute rule of captains. By the early 1800s, anywhere between one-third and one-half of all naval seamen serving in the North Atlantic had participated in at least one mutiny, many of them in several, and some even on ships in different navies. In The Bloody Flag, historian Niklas Frykman explores in vivid prose how a decade of violent conflict onboard gave birth to a distinct form of radical politics that brought together the egalitarian culture of North Atlantic maritime communities with the revolutionary era's constitutional republicanism. The attempt to build a radical maritime republic failed, but the red flag that flew from the masts of mutinous ships survived to become the most enduring global symbol of class struggle, economic justice, and republican liberty to this day.

Описание: Two campaigns in India with the British light cavalry

As its commanding officer and as a noted Oxford University academic Colonel Henry Hamilton was well placed to write the history of the 14th (King's) Hussars. His full regimental history covers from the origins of the regiment in 1715 to its service during the Boer War at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. While some military history students require a work of this depth, there are those who are primarily concerned with the periods when regiments were on active service. For the 14th (King's) Hussars in the 19th century, this was during the Napoleonic Wars, principally during the Peninsular War in Spain and in the South of France, and later in India where as H. M 14th (King's) Light Dragoons they served with distinction in the Second Sikh War and during the Indian Mutiny. By carefully editing Hamilton's book, and adding illustrations and maps and supplementary material not originally present, the Leonaur editors have created two linked volumes that focus on these periods of the regiment's history.
The Puggrie Wallahs 1841-59 follows the 14th (King's ) Light Dragoons as they take part in the second campaign fought to subjugate the martial Sikhs of the Punjab. Hamilton's accounts of the battles of the Second Sikh War are riveting, but of particular interest to students of the subject will be the authors research into the infamous 'volt-face' incident at the Battle of Chillianwallah where cavalry regiments 'about-turned' and retired whilst closing upon the enemy. Hamilton has included several, rarely seen first hand accounts of the Chillianwallah engagement that make fascinating and illuminating reading. The regiment's campaign during the Indian Mutiny of 1857 is no less engrossing and the book is unreservedly recommended.

Описание: The mutiny as seen by a Lancer's wife

This account, which briefly covers life in India immediately preceding the Indian Mutiny, was originally titled A Lady's Life Before and During the Indian Mutiny. The 'red' year of 1857 was an apocalyptic one for many of the British in India and Mrs. Ouvry's account as she gives us the perspective of a wife of a senior regimental officer in a British Army cavalry regiment is, of course, harrowing. Henry Ouvry was an officer of the 3rd Light Dragoons before transferring to the 9th Lancers who saw much action and earned themselves a fearsome reputation during the Mutiny. Although Mrs. Ouvry was spared the experiences of the wives of officers of native regiments whose men rose up to slaughter them, this was still a time of anguish, terror and uncertainty for her, and this memoir brings her experiences vividly to life for anyone interested in the period. Her husband's book, Cavalry Experiences is also available from Leonaur and is an excellent companion work touching on the same events.
Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.

Описание: This book records the actions of those Irish soldiers (and others) who were awarded the Victoria Cross in the event known to the British public in 1857 as 'The Indian Mutiny'. Since then, revisionist historians have applied other names to what occurred: a 'war of independence', 'a revolt', or 'a great rebellion'... none of these are accurate for the events that began in Meerut on Sunday, 10 May 1857: it was a mutiny; when soldiers refused a lawful command, it was a mutiny. Those former members of the Indian regiments were mutineers and those civilians who joined or supported them were rebels... these were the words of the time and, in recounting the activities of the time, these are the words that should be used. It took two and a half years to quell the Mutiny, and more than half the regiments of the British Army would, at some stage, see action - and this involved only the Indian troops in one of three Presidencies. While many regimental records show the names of those men who were wounded, or who died of disease or were killed in action - allowing a total number to be calculated - the overall cost to the native populations of Indian towns and villages can only be guessed at.
