Описание: The book attempts to extend the media archeological approach (strongly infused with the work of Gilbert Simondon) to the world of algorithms, understood not only as a broad category of things, but as a rich field of concrete approaches, ideas, and traditions. The actual content of fields like information and computer science is almost completely unknown to a wider scholarly audience and there is urgent need to engage these knowledge domains more thoroughly. The book therefore strives to situate the contemporary debates around advanced algorithms in a broader history that will, hopefully, help us in formulating critiques of the role these algorithms play in our societies that are more technically informed and able to connect issues more easily to questions and problems that have appeared in similar form elsewhere. The book is not simply a history or social critique of algorithmic techniques constitutive of the modern world, but an attempt to clarify the rationale behind these techniques, of the archive of ideas that informs them. I hope that this book will help bridging the gaping gulf between our (lacking) societal understanding of advanced algorithms and what they actually do and how they do it. This pedagogical goal is exemplified by a set of demonstrators, online playgrounds that accompany each case study, designed to show how a specific technique works.
