Описание: This 25th anniversary edition places abortion politics in the context of reproductive justice today and explains why abortion has been--and remains--a political flashpoint in the United States.
Prior to Roe v. Wade, hundreds of thousands of illegal abortions occurred in the United States every year. Rickie Solinger shares the story of Ruth Barnett, an abortionist in Portland, Oregon, between 1918 and 1968 to demonstrate that it was the law, not so-called back-alley practitioners, that most endangered women's lives in the years before abortion was legal. Women from all walks of life came to Barnett to seek abortions, who worked in a proper office, undisturbed by legal authorities, and never losing a patient. But in the anti-abortion fervor of the post-World War II era, Barnett and other practitioners were hounded by police and became convenient targets for politicians, forcing desperate women to use abortion syndicates run by racketeers or self-induced methods that often ended in serious injury or death. Solinger makes vivid use of newspaper accounts and extant legal transcripts to document how, throughout the country, laws were used to persecute competent abortion practitioners.
This 25th anniversary edition clarifies why the cultural and political meanings of abortion have remained surprisingly static despite the status of women changing so dramatically since Barnett and Roe v. Wade. And as attempts to overturn Roe v. Wade continue, The Abortionist is an instructive reminder of the vigilance necessary to protect both women and those who provide them with the freedom to decide for themselves what is best for their own health.
Описание: New medical technologies, women`s willingness to talk online and off, and tighter judicial reins on state legislatures are shaking up the practice of abortion. As talk becomes more transparent, Carol Sanger writes, women`s decisions about whether to become mothers will be treated more like those of other adults making significant personal choices.

Описание: How to Do Things with Affects develops affects as a highly productive concept for both cultural analysis and the reading of aesthetic forms. Shifting the focus from individual experiences and the human interiority of personal emotions and feelings toward the agency of cultural objects, social arrangements and aesthetic matter, the book examines how affects operate and are triggered by aesthetic forms, media events and cultural practices. Transgressing disciplinary boundaries and emphasizing close reading, the collected essays explore manifold affective transmissions and resonances enacted by modernist literary works, contemporary visual arts, horror and documentary films, museum displays and animated pornography, with a special focus on how they impact on political events, media strategies and social situations. Описание: Queer Experimental Literature ultimately reveals that the recent turn to affective reading in literary studies is underwritten by a para-academic history of bad reading that offers new idioms for understanding the affective agencies of queer aesthetics.

Описание: Affective Materialities breaks ground by reexamining modernist theorizations of the body, opening up artistic, political, and ethical possibilities at the intersection of affect theory and ecocriticism, two recent directions in literary studies not typically brought into conversation. Modernist creativity, the volume proposes, may return to us notions of the feeling, material body that contemporary scholarship has lost touch with, bodies that suggest alternative relations to others and to the world. Contributors argue that modernist writers frequently bridge the dichotomy between body and world by portraying bodies that merge with or are re-created by their surroundings into an amalgam of self and place. Chapters focus on this treatment of the body through works by canonical modernists including William Carlos Williams, Virginia Woolf, and E.M. Forster, alongside lesser-studied writers Janet Frame, Herbert Read, and Nella Larsen. Showing the ways the body in literature can be a lens for understanding the fluidities of race, gender, and sexuality, as well as species and subjectivity, this volume maps the connections among modernist aesthetics, histories of the twentieth-century body, and the concerns of modernism that can also speak to urgent concerns of today.

Описание: Youth Mediations and Affective Relations explores dynamic and expansive possibilities of young people’s affective lives as they engage with diverse social media in prolific and specific ways. It addresses the situated embodied and emotional experiences of young people as they actively use media in order to forge communities, play imaginatively, protest injustice, experiment with their identities, make media or explore friendships. Furthermore, it explores the relational and contextual dimensions of their everyday interactions. Against static knowledge and moral panics that abstract youth from the complex and changing worlds in which they grapple with digital media, this book hones in on the layered textures of youth experiences to consider how today’s youth think and feel in subtle and unexpected ways.

Stephen Asma and Rami Gabriel help us understand the evolution of the mind by exploring this more primal capability that we share with other animals: the power to feel, which is the root of so much that makes us uniquely human.
