Описание:
Focussing on The Times, this monograph uses corpus linguistics to examine how suffrage campaigners' different ideologies were conflated in the newspaper over a crucial time period for the movement - 1908 to 1914, leading up to the Representation of the People Act in 1918.
Looking particularly at representations of suffrage campaigners' support of or opposition to military action, Gupta uses a range of methodological approaches drawn from corpus linguistics, discourse analysis and CDA. These include: collocation analysis, examination of consistent significant collocates and van Leeuwen's taxonomy of social actors.
The book offers an innovative insight into contemporary public understanding of the suffrage campaign with implications for researchers examining large, complex protest movements.
Описание: In 1903, Emmeline Pankhurst founded the Womens Social and Political Union, a militant organization dedicated to achieving womens suffrage. Its radical approach, consisting of stone-throwing, window-breaking, arson, and physical confrontation with authorities. The History of the Womens Suffrage was written at a time when it was in the very forefront of British politics and offers an insiders perspective on the motives and ideals that inspired its leaders and followers. When the long struggle for the enfranchisement of women is over, those who read the history of the movement will wonder at the blindness that led the Government of the day to obstinately resist so simple and obvious a measure of justice. A passionate love of freedom, a strong desire to do social service and an intense sympathy for the unfortunate, together, made the movement possible.

Описание: Many of Canada’s most famous suffragists lived and campaigned in the Prairie provinces, which led the way in granting women the right to vote and hold office. In Ours by Every Law of Right and Justice, Sarah Carter challenges the myth that grateful male legislators simply handed women the vote when it was asked for. Settler suffragists worked long and hard to overcome obstacles and persuade doubters. But even as they petitioned for the vote for their sisters, they often approved of that same right being denied to “foreigners” and Indigenous peoples. By situating the suffragists’ struggle in the colonial history of Prairie Canada, this powerful and passionate book shows that the right to vote meant different things to different people.

Описание: “When the history of suffrage is written, the role played by our politicians will cut a sad figure beside that of the women they insulted.” Speaking in 1935, feminist Idola Saint-Jean captured the bitter nature of Quebec women’s prolonged fight for the right to vote. To Be Equals in Our Own Country is a passionate yet even-handed account of the road to suffrage in Quebec, examining women’s political participation since winning the vote in 1940 and comparing their struggle to movements in other countries. This astute exploration of enfranchisement rightly recognizes suffrage as a fundamental question of human rights.

Описание: This Seminar Study was the first book to trace the British womens suffrage campaign from its origins in the 1860s through to the achievement of equal suffrage in 1928. Unlike most studies of the period, the book pays equal attention to the period after 1914 when suffrage legislation was actually obtained. In this new edition, Smith provides new evidence drawn from the authors research on how the main post-1918 womens organisation [the NUSEC] worked with Conservative Party women to persuade the Conservative Party to endorse equal franchise rights. Smith focuses on the actions of reformers and their opponents, with due attention paid to the campaigns in Scotlandand Walesas well as the movements in England. Within a chronological framework he explores why womens suffrage was such a contentious issue, and how women gained the vote despite opponents fears that it would undermine gender boundaries (thus the suffrage campaign is firmly placed in the context of gender conflicts developing during this period). The campaign is not treated in isolation: not only is it viewed as part of the emerging womens movement but it is also integrated into the wider political picture. Thus the book sheds light on related issues, such as the reasons for the Liberal Partys decline and the Conservative Partys unexpected electoral success in the interwar years.
Описание: With this first history of suffrage to look at contributions by domestic servants, Laura Schwartz brings a feminist perspective to labour history. Feminism and the Servant Problem offers a new understanding of the class politics of the suffrage movement, and challenges traditional notions of who made up the British working class.

Suffrage and the Arts re-establishes the central role that artistic women and men-from jewellers, portrait painters, embroiderers, through to retailers of 'artistic' products-played in the suffrage campaign in the British Isles. As political individuals, they were foot soldiers who helped sustain the momentum of the movement and as designers, makers and sellers they spread the message of the campaign to new local, national and international audiences, mediating how suffrage activism was understood by society at large. This edited collection offers a range of new perspectives and readings of the outpouring of creative responses to the campaign.
Contributors, who include historians, art historians, curators, museum professionals and suffrage experts, call upon the historiographical developments of the last thirty years, alongside new archival discoveries, to showcase the vibrancy of ongoing research in this area. Throughout, chapters investigate the wider socio-cultural backdrop to suffrage and the women's movement, the difficult choices that were made between professional, artistic aspirations and political commitment, and how institutional and informal networks influenced creative expression and participation in feminist politics. From shining light on the use of portraiture to bolster the cultural cachet of the militant Women's Social and Political Union, uncovering the links between Victorian interior design, enterprise and suffrage, through to questioning the supposed conservativism of women's art institutions during the campaign and in the inter-war era, Suffrage and the Arts is a timely and important collection which will contribute to a number of scholarly fields.
