Описание: Postmodernism has been a buzzword of contemporary society for the last decade. But how can it be defined? In this Very Short Introduction Christopher Butler challenges and explores the key ideas of postmodernists, and their engagement with theory, literature, the visual arts, film, architecture, and music.
Now in paperback, Fredric Jameson’s most wide-ranging work seeks to crystalize a definition of ”postmodernism”. Jameson’s inquiry looks at the postmodern across a wide landscape, from “high” art to “low” from market ideology to architecture, from painting to “punk” film, from video art to literature.

Описание: This book presents the first comprehensive study of the philosopher and art historian Edgar Wind’s critique of modern art. The first student of Erwin Panofsky, and a close associate of Aby Warburg, Edgar Wind was unusual among the ‘Warburgians’ for his sustained interest in modern art, together with his support for contemporary artists. This culminated in his respected and influential book Art and Anarchy (1963), which seemed like a departure from his usual scholarly work on the iconography of Renaissance art.
Based on extensive archival research and bringing to light previously unpublished lectures, Edgar Wind and Modern Art reveals the extent and seriousness of Wind’s thinking about modern art, and how it was bound up with theories about art and knowledge that he had developed during the 1920s and 30s. Wind’s ideas are placed in the context of a closely connected international cultural milieu consisting of some of the leading artists and thinkers of the twentieth century. In particular, the book discusses in detail his friendships with three significant artists: Pavel Tchelitchew, Ben Shahn and R. B. Kitaj. In the process, the existence of an alternative to the prevailing formalist approach of Alfred Barr and Clement Greenberg to modern art, based on the enduring importance of the symbol, is revealed.

Описание:
Requiem for the Ego recounts Freud's last great attempt to 'save' the autonomy of the ego, which drew philosophical criticism from the most prominent philosophers of the period—Adorno, Heidegger, and Wittgenstein. Despite their divergent orientations, each contested the ego's capacity to represent mental states through word and symbol to an agent surveying its own cognizance. By discarding the subject-object divide as a model of the mind, they dethroned Freud's depiction of the ego as a conceit of a misleading self-consciousness and a faulty metaphysics. Freud's inquisitors, while employing divergent arguments, found unacknowledged consensus in identifying the core philosophical challenges of defining agency and describing subjectivity. In Requiem, Tauber uniquely synthesizes these philosophical attacks against psychoanalysis and, more generally, provides a kaleidoscopic portrait of the major developments in mid-20th century philosophy that prepared the conceptual grounding for postmodernism.

Описание: This collection combines Del Loewenthal`s new and recent works with earlier writings, drawing together his outstanding research and contribution to existential theory, practice and research.
Post-Postmodernism begins with a simple premise: we no longer live in the world of "postmodernism," famously dubbed "the cultural logic of late capitalism" by Fredric Jameson in 1984. Far from charting any simple move "beyond" postmodernism since the 1980s, though, this book argues that we've experienced an intensification of postmodern capitalism over the past decades, an increasing saturation of the economic sphere into formerly independent segments of everyday cultural life. If "fragmentation" was the preferred watchword of postmodern America, "intensification" is the dominant cultural logic of our contemporary era.
Post-Postmodernism surveys a wide variety of cultural texts in pursuing its analyses—everything from the classic rock of Black Sabbath to the post-Marxism of Antonio Negri, from considerations of the corporate university to the fare at the cineplex, from reading experimental literature to gambling in Las Vegas, from Badiou to the undergraduate classroom. Insofar as cultural realms of all kinds have increasingly been overcoded by the languages and practices of economics, Nealon aims to construct a genealogy of the American present, and to build a vocabulary for understanding the relations between economic production and cultural production today—when American-style capitalism, despite its recent battering, seems nowhere near the point of obsolescence. Post-postmodern capitalism is seldom late but always just in time. As such, it requires an updated conceptual vocabulary for diagnosing and responding to our changed situation.

Описание: At the heart of the current surge of interest in religion among contemporary Continental philosophers stands Augustine's Confessions. With Derrida's Circumfession constantly in the background, this volume takes up the provocative readings of Augustine by Heidegger, Lyotard, Arendt, and Ricoeur. Derrida himself presides over and comments on essays by major Continental philosophers and internationally recognized Augustine scholars. While studies on and about Augustine as a philosopher abound, none approach his work from such a uniquely postmodern point of view, showing both the continuing relevance of Augustine and the religious resonances within postmodernism. Posed at the intersection of philosophy, theology, and religious studies, this book will be of interest to scholars and students of Augustine as well as those interested in the invigorating discussion between philosophy, religion, and postmodernism. Contributors include Geoffrey Bennington, Philippe Capelle, John D. Caputo, Elizabeth A. Clark, Hent de Vries, Jacques Derrida, Jean Bethke Elshtain, Richard Kearney, Catherine Malabou, James O'Donnell, Michael J. Scanlon, and Mark Vessey. Описание: This Introduction surveys the full spectrum of postmodern culture - high and low, avant-garde and popular, famous and obscure - across a range of fields, from architecture and visual art to fiction, poetry, and drama. Comprehensive and accessible, this book is indispensable for scholars, students, and general readers interested in late twentieth-century culture.
American Fiction in Transition is a study of the observer-hero narrative, a highly significant but critically neglected genre of the American novel. Through the lens of this transitional genre, the book explores the 1990s in relation to debates about the end of postmodernism, and connects the decade to other transitional periods in US literature. Novels by four major contemporary writers are examined: Philip Roth, Paul Auster, E. L. Doctorow and Jeffrey Eugenides. Each novel has a similar structure: an observer-narrator tells the story of an important person in his life who has died. But each story is equally about the struggle to tell the story, to find adequate means to narrate the transitional quality of the hero's life. In playing out this narrative struggle, each novel thereby addresses the broader problem of historical transition, a problem that marks the legacy of the postmodern era in American literature and culture.
Описание: The first full-length text in any language to wrestle with the conceptual relationship between the spiritual science of Rudolf Steiner and the French Postmodern thinking of Jacques Derrida, Alain Badiou, Gilles Deleuze and Guattari, and Emmanuel Levinas. Furthermore, the book is a living investigation of new ways of deactualizing and taking the first steps in spiritualizing thinking, perception, sensation, language, and willing. It is a direction demonstration of original spiritual research and creation, inscribed and readable by Intuitive Thinking and Moral Imagination in a vibrant, breathing experiment of the weaving together and opening up of living concepts. It is a sensible and supersensible cognitive-chemical experiment carried out and followed moment by moment one step beyond subjective, transcendental, and phenomenological research. The text operates in a neutral field, which does not try to interpret or critique, but rather opens up the direct perception of the concept plane and its new moral intensive fields, and the activities and events engendered there. This text brings Anthroposophy into direct contact with the most current elements of the evolution of world-thinking, using its life and light to illuminate the fresh notions in the most up-to-date philosophical thinking. The contents include: Part I - The Flashing and Rustling in the Stillness of the Woods - The Mysteries of Movement, Thinking and Perception Chapter 1: The Eye-World Stream: The Melting and Reorientation of Sight, Light, and Sensation Chapter 2: The Dance of the Others in Moral Space: The Dynamic Respiration of the Moving and the Still in Thinking Life and in the Will Chapter 3: Empty Skull: The Moral Call of the Threshold and the New Self Chapter 4: To the North Star and Back to Earth: Living in Pure Concepts and Finding My Own Space Chapter 5: The Implosion of Conscious Events and the Motion of the World-Human Part II - The Two Faces of Warmth: The Mysteries of the Void, the Will, and the OtherChapter 6: Building New Organs of Heat lifeChapter 7: The Soul of Repetition Chapter 8: Extraction, Suction, and Negative Combustion in the Void Part III - Tongue, Tone and Fire: The Mysteries of Sound, Smell, Touch, and the Spiritualization of Language Chapter 9: The Vaporization of the Senses of Touch, Hearing, and Smell Chapter 10: Language and Warmth Chapter 11: Anxiety and Courage in the Instability of the Air Chapter 12: Culmination in the Real Meeting of the Other through Fire
