Описание: Intends to give an advanced overview of flexoelectricity, a linear physical coupling between mechanical (orientational) deformations and electric polarization, which is specific to systems with orientational order, such as liquid crystals. It addresses a common macroscopic (continuum) description the microscopic theory of flexoelectricity.

Описание: This book is written from the point of view of prospective users, with a practical approach, and discusses how optical fiber sensors can be applied to the detection of biophysical and biological quantities inside the body. The aim is to close the gap between the technologies and their application in the biomedical and clinical world.
Описание: Nanostructuring of materials is a task at the heart of many modern disciplines in mechanical engineering, as well as optics, electronics, and the life sciences. This book includes an introduction to the relevant nonlinear optical processes associated with very short laser pulses for the generation of structures far below the classical optical diffraction limit of about 200 nanometers as well as coverage of state-of-the-art technical and biomedical applications. These applications include silicon and glass wafer processing, production of nanowires, laser transfection and cell reprogramming, optical cleaning, surface treatments of implants, nanowires, 3D nanoprinting, STED lithography, friction modification, and integrated optics. The book highlights also the use of modern femtosecond laser microscopes and nanoscopes as novel nanoprocessing tools.
In recent years, metal halide perovskites have emerged as a rising star among semiconductor materials owing to their low cost, solution processability, and fascinating combination of material properties enabling a broad range of energy applications. Accompanied by the unprecedented success in the photovoltaic community, which has witnessed a certified power conversion efficiency of 23.7%, rapid advancement has also been achieved in the areas of light-emitting diodes, lasers, photodetectors, and solar-to-fuel energy conversion devices. Beyond the dominant format of polycrystalline perovskite thin films for solar cell applications, recent progress in metal halide perovskite crystals, ranging from nanocrystals to macroscopic single-crystals, has spurred a great deal of both scientific and industrial interest. Great research efforts have endeavored to develop new techniques for crystal growth and investigate the physical and chemical properties of the materials and explore their emerging applications. These exciting achievements call for a rationalization of the different forms of perovskite semiconductors beyond the widely used polycrystalline thin films. In the current Special Issue, "Metal Halide Perovskite Crystals: Growth Techniques, Properties and Emerging Applications," we aim to provide a forum for the discussion and presentation of recent advances in the fields of research related to metal halide perovskite crystals.

Описание: This book introduces the most important concepts related to the structure and physical properties of liquid crystals, including some of the theoretical aspects. It consists of three parts: structure, physical properties, and electro-optic behavior.
A liquid-crystal display (LCD) is a flat-panel display or other electronically-modulated optical device that uses the light-modulating properties of liquid crystals. Liquid Crystal Displays are already widely used in consumer electronics, but research and development is still ongoing. The shifting focus of research follows a pattern of improved definition, increased display size, wider viewing angles and faster responses, with improvements in each area influencing the next. There is also growing interest in the use of liquid crystal materials in novel applications including sensing devices, spatial modulators and light-shielding windows.
This book discusses the latest LCD technologies, with their challenges, opportunities, and problems to be solved, at a level suited to an academic and research-professional audience. There is a particular focus on display quality such as image sticking, contrast ratio and colour hue that has not been dealt with thoroughly elsewhere. Current and future trends in liquid crystal materials and technologies based on their evolving role and new applications are discussed in detail.
Описание: Written by leading experts in the field, this text provides systematic coverage of the theoretical analysis, physics, functional designs, and engineering applications of advanced engineered electromagnetic surfaces. It is invaluable reading for researchers, practising engineers and students in electromagnetics, antennas, metasurfaces and optics.
