Описание: In a world facing a growing water crisis, conflicts regarding water sharing are expected to grow, especially in transboundary river basins. This book attempts to bring together methodologies and tools from socio-economic, international policy, engineering, and water management specialists dealing with transboundary water resources.
Описание: The majority of disasters are water-related with the flow of freshwater mostly occurring in transboundary basins. This Words into Action Guide aims to raise awareness on the importance of river basin management and transboundary cooperation in Disaster Risk Reduction, while taking into account climate change adaptation.

Описание: Attending water security is an important challenge and a major systemic risk humanity faces in the years to come. This is due to population increase, over-consumption of water, especially in agriculture, climate change and various forms of water pollution. The issue becomes more complicated in transboundary water catchments that cover almost half of the world’s land surface, with about 60% of global river flow and 40% of the world’s population. Also, in many parts of the planet, like Saharan Africa, population depends on groundwater resources located in transboundary aquifer systems. These facts illustrate the importance of the book's subject, which is the governance of transboundary waters, both surface and groundwater. The book is written by two distinguished scientists, who, having worked in various international institutions, like UNESCO, GEF, UNEP and at the European Commission, have both an extended expertise on how to bridge the gap between science and political decision-making, which is the main factor for an effective governance of water resources. What is new in the book is the integrated analysis of transboundary governance of both surface water and groundwater, as it occurs in reality. In current literature, groundwater is still often missing for the benefit of surface water or, on the contrary, it is treated separately from surface water. The most important feature of the book is to distinguish between the real and a 'good' or an effective transboundary water governance and to provide practical tools, methodologies and examples for its implementation in the field. Published timely during 2018, the book will contribute to address successfully practical problems of governance of transboundary waters that represent a very important part of our precious fresh water resources.

Описание: A source of information on water resources, their quality and quantity, in the countries in the Balkans. This book analyzes institutional structures, water management issues and water monitoring problems, with reference to international waters, using case studies, including the Sava River, Lake Ohrid, and The Nestos/Mesta River.
Описание: Comprehensive statistical and trend analysis of rainfall and streamflow were conducted to describe the streamflow regime and trends in the semi-arid Incomati basin. This provides the basis for better operational water management in the catchment.
This open access book focuses on the Salween River, shared by China, Myanmar, and Thailand, that is increasingly at the heart of pressing regional development debates. The basin supports the livelihoods of over 10 million people, and within it there is great socio-economic, cultural and political diversity. The basin is witnessing intensifying dynamics of resource extraction, alongside large dam construction, conservation and development intervention, that is unfolding within a complex terrain of local, national and transnational governance. With a focus on the contested politics of water and associated resources in the Salween basin, this book offers a collection of empirical case studies that highlights local knowledge and perspectives. Given the paucity of grounded social science studies in this contested basin, this book provides conceptual insights at the intersection of resource governance, development, and politics of knowledge relevant to researchers, policy-makers and practitioners at a time when rapid change is underway.
- Fills a significant knowledge gap on a major river in Southeast Asia, with empirical and conceptual contributions
- Inter-disciplinary perspective and by a range of writers, including academics, policy-makers and civil society researchers, the majority from within Southeast Asia
- New policy insights on a river at the cross-roads of a major political and development transition

Описание: In this book Kornfeld analyzes the effectiveness of North American international courts and ad hoc arbitral tribunals, in adjudicating transboundary water disputes and allocating scarce water resources. He traces the historical development of water law, taking into account issues of sovereignty, jurisdiction and scientific evidence.
