Naturally occurring salt tolerant and halophytic plants (trees, shrubs, grasses, and forbs) have always been utilized by livestock as a supplement or drought reserve. Salt tolerant forage and fodder crops are now being planted over wide areas. Increasingly, large-scale production of fodder on formerly abandoned irrigated cropland has allowed salt tolerant and halophytic feedstuffs to be mainstreamed into the supply chain for feedlots. Feeding salty feeds to livestock has been evaluated in many countries with good outcomes especially as a way to improve livestock nutrition and productivity. Better ways have been devised to use these potentially valuable feed resources. These feedstuffs are best fed in mixed rations. Substituting conventional fodder with up to 30 percent of the diets comprising halophytic feedstuffs have proved most successful for ruminant livestock but special formulations have been devised for poultry and rabbits. There are big savings on the import of costly feedstuffs and benefits to livelihoods of those dependent on scattered, sparse and unreliable forage/fodder in the worlds drylands that cover about 40 percent of the worlds land surface.

This book is written by leading authorities from many different countries. It reviews past and current work on the animal-oriented aspects of the utilization of feedstuffs derived from salt tolerant and halophytic plants. It brings to the reader (scientist, researcher, academics and their students, policy makers, and livestock operators) an up-to-date analysis of the important issues related to salt-rich feedstuffs (nutrition, productivity, and reproduction).

Описание: Feedstuff is a common standard for each kind of food for animals, which are in the charge of man and serve as food. Feed for livestock is of special interest. The quality of feed is responsible for the health of animals and indirectly for the quality of human nutrition. Agriculturally used plants, such as numerous grains, oil seeds and nuts, root crops, and to a smaller extent, many forage crops are susceptible to mycotoxin contamination. Fungal and in the end mycotoxin contaminated feed may be involved in modern livestock production practice (confined rearing on high-density diets) because plant feedstuff especially from multiple sources may be used for feeding. The mixing of mycotoxin contaminated pecan, walnut, or other nut meats into feedstuff is one example. The nuts are pressed to recover the oil while most of the toxin is concentrated in the residual meats. The press cake usually is diverted into animal feed channels. The amount of these (protein supplement) ingredients, while small, could cause problems in the health of animal and human. Available data suggest that the mold and mycotoxin problem is largely one of the worldwide feed management. Especially individual farm silos and feed troughs are major sites of toxin production in mold-contaminated feeds. Guidelines for the investigation and amelioration of feedstuff quality in different countries have been prepared. Mycotoxin contamination of feeds occurs as a result of crop invasion by field fungi.

Описание: This open access book presents simple, robust pre-field screening protocols that allow plant breeders to screen for enhanced tolerance to heat stress in rice. Two critical heat-sensitive stages in the lifecycle of the rice crop are targeted – the seedling and flowering stages – with screening based on simple phenotypic responses. The protocols are based on the use of a hydroponics system and/or pot experiments in a glasshouse in combination with a controlled growth chamber where the heat stress treatment is applied. The protocols are designed to be effective, simple, reproducible and user-friendly. The protocols will enable plant breeders to effectively reduce the number of plants from a few thousands to less than 100 candidate individual mutants or lines in a greenhouse/growth chamber, which can then be used for further testing and validation in the field conditions. The methods can also be used to classify rice genotypes according to their heat tolerance characteristics. Thus, different types of heat stress tolerance mechanisms can be identified, presenting opportunities for pyramiding different (mutant) sources of heat stress tolerance.
