Since the mid-1990s, the fast-growing suburb of Amherst, NY has been voted by numerous publications as one of the safest places to live in America. Yet, like many of America’s seemingly idyllic suburbs, Amherst is by no means without crime—especially when it comes to adolescents. In America’s Safest City, noted juvenile justice scholar Simon I. Singer uses the types of delinquency seen in Amherst as a case study illuminating the roots of juvenile offending and deviance in modern society. If we are to understand delinquency, Singer argues, we must understand it not just in impoverished areas, but in affluent ones as well. Drawing on ethnographic work, interviews with troubled youth, parents and service providers, and extensive surveys of teenage residents in Amherst, the book illustrates how a suburban environment is able to provide its youth with opportunities to avoid frequent delinquencies. Singer compares the most delinquent teens he surveys with the least delinquent, analyzing the circumstances that did or did not lead them to deviance and the ways in which they confront their personal difficulties, societal discontents, and serious troubles. Adolescents, parents, teachers, coaches and officials, he concludes, are able in this suburban setting to recognize teens’ need for ongoing sources of trust, empathy, and identity in a multitude of social settings, allowing them to become what Singer terms ‘relationally modern’ individuals better equipped to deal with the trials and tribulations of modern life. For the past twenty to thirty years, control theories of crime have been at the center of theoretical development in criminology. Key to the control theory perspective is the notion that crime is an inherently individual act, and its explanation requires that we focus on the characteristics of individuals who commit crimes. Consequently, control theory focuses on such issues as self-control and social control.
The contributions to this volume explicate and extend the application of control theory. It is divided into three general areas. Part 1 focuses on key assumptions and components of control theories. Contributors discuss the notion of learning, or socialization, in the context of control theory and the effects that families, peers, and the criminal justice system have on self-control, social ties, and criminal behavior.
Part 2 applies control theory to areas typically assumed to be out of the domain of self-control theory and social control theory, such as gender differences in crime, domestic violence, and group crime. Considering control theory's emphasis on explaining individual criminal acts, these chapters suggest an interesting area of development by highlighting the possibility that differences in crime across or within groups may begin with individual characteristics and then making inferences about groups and group processes.

Описание: Analyzing Delinquency among Kurdish Adolescents uses Hirschi's social bonding theory to examine the mediating effect of social bonding on delinquent behavior among Kurdish teenagers, who were used as a case study to test the usefulness of this theory. In this study, participants were selected from one G len movement affiliated school and one public or non-G len affiliated school. This study sheds light on Turkish society's chaotic conditions in southeastern Turkey, particularly with respect to Kurdish adolescents' involvement in the Kurdish Worker's Party (PKK). There is a lack of research regarding how Kurdish adolescents are involved in delinquent behavior as portrayed in popular Turkish media. Social bonding theory, developed and mainly tested in American and western European contexts, needs additional exploration of its efficiency in a nonwestern, especially Islamic, society. Thus, this book helps to better understand the factors that influence crime and delinquency in developing, culturally diverse social structures. Scholars in sociology, psychology, and criminology, as well as in the fields of political science, Middle Eastern studies, and education, will greatly benefit from this study.
