Описание: The ability to access and economically develop vast amounts of America's unconventional natural gas resources, especially large shale gas formations, has altered our national view on energy and has subsequently changed the discourse at the federal, state, and local levels. Since 2008, when the economic viability of shale gas resources first became widely recognized, policymakers and industry leaders have worked to better understand the nature of this resource; the risks and opportunities associated with its production, transport, and use; and the potential strategic implications of the United States' new energy reality. The paradox of the U.S. unconventional gas story is that the technologies and industry practices that made it possible have been decades in the making; the public policy and commercial landscape is vastly different from just a few years ago; and the story of this remarkable resource development is still in its infancy. In an attempt to capture the current state of play with respect to resource development, operational practices, risk identification and mitigation, impacts assessment and identify strategies that allow this valuable resource to be prudently developed, the CSIS Energy and National Security Program undertook this Unconventional Gas Initiative. Over the course of the past year, the authors were able-in concert with industry and nongovernmental organization (NGO) supporters-to work with a wide array of regulators, policymakers, environmental, industry and financial groups, academics and community stakeholders to capture the latest understanding of the unconventional gas development picture and develop themes and findings in the hope of facilitating an informed discussion on a path forward.
Описание: This review of good practices aims to promote the implementation of the Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries in the Context of Food Security and Poverty Eradication (SSF Guidelines). The eight case studies specifically promote participatory approaches – in line with the SSF Guidelines principles – and increased interaction between research and fishing communities, including the use of traditional knowledge. The case studies range from the study of specific tools (such as the fisheries learning exchange methodology in Madagascar and Mozambique) to regional policy formulation (for example, the SSF Guidelines protocol for Caribbean policies), as well as specific thematic areas (such as disaster risk in Bangladesh). Recommendations emerging from the studies refer to, among other things, holistic approaches to co-management and social responsibility; broad engagement, inclusiveness and partnerships; the power of communication; and gender equality and the role of women.
Описание: Looks at how tenure and rights-based approaches can harmonize the concepts of responsible fisheries, social and economic development, and the fair and equitable application of user rights in capture fisheries.

Описание: Highlights the importance of fish and the small-scale fisheries sector for food security and nutrition, as well as the role of women in fisheries. Women are often marginalized and there is a strong need for their empowerment.
Описание: This report provides an overview of the biological status of assessed stocks around the world and relates measures of stock status to the strength of fisheries management. Stock assessment outputs, consisting primarily of time series of abundance and fishing pressure relative to target reference points, were compiled for 548 marine fish and invertebrate stocks in the RAM Legacy Stock Assessment Database.
Among the data summary methods were global and regional mean trends of abundance and fishing pressure relative to target reference points; bivariate plots of relative abundance and fishing pressure; estimates of potential equilibrium yield foregone at current fishing pressure; and proportions of stocks in different biomass status categories. These measures of stock status were summarized at the global level as well as separated by 16 FAO Major Fishing Areas and ocean basin regions for comparison.
The data presented in this report demonstrated that where fisheries management is being intensely applied (i.e. with regulations based on outputs of scientific stock assessments, and where those regulations are enforced), fishing pressure can be maintained within sustainable ranges that provide maximum or near-maximum long-term yield.

Описание:
The Role of Ecosystem Services in Sustainable Food Systems reveals, in simple terms, the operational definition, concepts and applications of ecosystem services with a focus on sustainable food systems. The book presents case studies on both geographical and production system-wide considerations. Initial chapters discuss concepts, methodologies and the tools needed to understand ecosystem services in the broader food system. Middle and later chapters present different perspectives from case studies of ecosystem services derived from some of the key sustainable food production systems used by farmers, along with discussions on the challenges of deriving full benefits and how they can be overcome.
Researchers, students, scientists, development practitioners and policymakers will welcome this reference as they continue their work related to sustainable food systems.
Introduces the concept of ecosystem services in simple terms for a wide readership
Provides an explanation of sustainable food systems
Contains the tools to identify and quantify ecosystem services in sustainable food systems
Identifies ecosystem services in specific systems utilized for sustainable food systems
Categorizes the challenges of deriving maximum benefits of ecosystem services

Описание: Payments for ecosystem services are hoped to encourage and promote sustainable practices in agricultural systems via financial incentives. Through methodological analysis and case studies, this book provides several examples of successful programs and aims to transfer them to other regions of the world.
