All examples can be synthesized and physically tested on an actual FPGA prototyping board. The book is a lab oriented text for both introductory and advanced digital design courses. The main focus of the book is on the effective derivation of hardware. The HDL syntactical coverage is kept to a minimum. Instead of explaining every detail of language constructs, the book focuses on a small, synthesizable subset and uses about a dozen code templates to provide the skeleton of various types of circuits. While this approach limits the "freedom" of syntactic expressions, it forces new designers to think more about hardware and develop innovative architecture.
