Описание: National governments are increasingly sharing the stage with many other forms of empowered social actors and authoritative players. Worldwide, alongside governmental bureaucracies, we witness the proliferation of non-for-profit and voluntary associations, business organizations and corporations, civic action committees and political parties, as well as celebrities and cultural icons. Importantly, whether they are individual- and collective social actors, these various actors are bestowed with the legitimate authority to speak their mind, act on their agenda, and influence the course of social progress. How might we conceptualize the role of such empowered social actors? This compilation of research and commentary gathers a range of institutional perspectives investigating what the devolution of state power and the so-called democratization of social action means for the nature of authority and how the multiplicity and variety of social actors impacts societies worldwide, extending from focus on agents to actors to actorhood.

Описание: One of the most impressive manuscripts this industry has ever seen. ...Dan Hitt, Beckett Media In the wake of the great baseball card bubble of the late 1980s and early 1990s - a time period in which new baseball card issues were wildly overproduced - everybody knows that modern baseball cards are worthless, and that valuable cards are strictly a vintage thing. And yet, many of the most valuable cards of the last 40-50 years have been printed in the last five to ten years. How is it possible that a Bowman Chrome Yasiel Puig card issued in the fall of 2013 sold for $18,000 in January 2014, or that a Bowman Chrome Mike Trout card issued in 2009 sold for $16,000 in February 2014? And how is it that two 1993 SP Derek Jeter rookie cards sold for $32,500 each in December 2013, at a time when many other copies of the same card were running in the $100-$150 range? Indeed, the investment profile of the modern baseball card and sports cards in general has improved dramatically over the past 20 years. In The Modern Baseball Card Investor, Jeff Hwang explains why, and shows you how you, too, can get in on the game. Key topics include: - The Value of Scarcity: Relative and absolute scarcity, pricing power, and leverage - The Baseball Prospecting Game: Betting on baseball s next big stars - Value Investing and the Gem Mint Game: A value investor's approach to the game - The Supply Chain and the Value Cycle: Examining the big picture and the other players in the game - Building Gems: Acquiring ungraded cards and building investment-grade assets - Other Sports: Football, basketball, and hockey cards. - And more If you have ever bought a baseball card, this book is for you.

Описание: What makes places like Silicon Valley tick? Can we replicate that magic in other places? Discover the answers in this groundbreaking book from two of the world's leading experts at the intersection of venture capital and global development. Victor W. Hwang and Greg Horowitt propose a radical new theory to explain the nature of innovation ecosystems: human networks that generate extraordinary creativity and output. They argue that free market thinking fails to consider the impact of human nature on the innovation process. This ambitious work challenges the basic assumptions that economists have held for over a century. The authors argue that innovation ecosystems - what they call Rainforests - can only thrive when certain cultural behaviors unlock human potential. Their theory of the Rainforest is influenced by several breakthrough ideas in academia, including insights on sociobiology from Harvard, economic transactions from the University of Chicago, and design theory from Stanford. With an unorthodox and entertaining narrative, the book reveals the mysterious mechanisms of Rainforests. Furthermore, the authors provide practical tools for readers to design, build, and sustain new innovation communities. The Rainforest will transform the way you think about technology, business, and leadership.

During the late 1960s through the early and mid-1970s, Chinese immigration into the United States came almost exclusively from Taiwan. They arrived on American shores to flee the regime of a dictator who used murder, brutality, and fear to stay in power and quell any political or social dissent.
While that generation of Taiwanese may have found refuge in the United States, many still never felt truly safe. In Escape from Taiwan, Chiufang Hwang recounts how the political oppression her parents experienced remained a constant specter during her own childhood, both because of her parents' paranoia and their involvement in secret Taiwanese expat pro-democracy organizations.
"My parents moved to the United States in the late 1960s when I was a toddler. Even though I grew up in this country, I was raised by people whose outlook was informed by fear and oppression, and they did their best to instill in me the dangers of speaking out--about anything. For me and other children of Taiwanese immigrants, their legacy of oppression became ours by default, and impacted our efforts to assimilate, both as children and adults, to our adopted country."
Part memoir, part family history, Escape from Taiwan recounts Chiufang's journey to understand the historical events that informed her upbringing, and how in the process it gave her a greater appreciation for the ideals represented by the Statue of Liberty to generations of immigrants.
Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses, yearning to breathe free ...
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door.

Описание:
In 1948, two years before Cold War tensions resulted in the invasion of South Korea by North Korea that started the Korean War, the first major political confrontation between leftists and rightists occurred on the South Korean island of Cheju, where communist activists disrupted United Nations-sanctioned elections and military personnel were deployed. What began as a counterinsurgency operation targeting 350 local rebels resulted in the deaths of roughly 30,000 uninvolved civilians, 10 percent of the island's population. Su-kyoung Hwang's Korea's Grievous War recounts the civilian experience of anticommunist violence, beginning with the Cheju Uprising in 1948 and continuing through the Korean War until 1953. Wartime declarations of emergency by both the U.S. and Korean governments were issued to contain communism, but a major consequence of their actions was to contribute to the loss of more than two million civilian lives. Hwang inventories the persecutions of left-leaning intellectuals under the South Korean regime of Syngman Rhee and the executions of political prisoners and innocent civilians to "prevent" their collaboration with North Korea. She highlights the role of the United States in observing, documenting, and yet failing to intervene in the massacres and of the U.S. Air Force's three-year firebombing campaign in North and South Korea. Hwang draws on archival research and personally conducted interviews to recount vividly the acts of anticommunist violence at the human level and illuminate the sufferings of civilian victims. Korea's Grievous War presents the historical background, political motivations, legal bases, and social consequences of anticommunist violence, tracing the enduring legacy of this destruction in the testimonies of survivors and bereaved families that only now can give voice to the lived experience of this grievous war and its aftermath.
