Описание: In sharply original readings of Mary Wollstonecraft, William Godwin, William Wordsworth, Lord Byron, and Percy Bysshe Shelley, Disastrous Subjectivities explores modernity’s failed promise to bring about a just social order under the ongoing threat of climate change. Drawing on Kantian critical philosophy and Lacanian theory, this book traverses aspects of the history of science, the form of the novel, the limits of historicism, and the impasses of moral autonomy. What passes for modernity takes shape not as truly modern or secular, but instead as a mode perpetually haunted by a traumatic sublime. The demand to realize justice within history turns out to require more than history can make possible, and more than the subject can bear.

Описание: This book examines how African American novels explore instances of racialization that are generated through discursive practices of whiteness in the interracial social encounters of everyday life. These fictional representations have political significance that explore the possibility of a dialogic communication with the American society at large.

Описание: The defeat of the Army of the Northwest in Michigan

The Battle of Frenchtown (which was also known as the Battle of the River Raisin and subsequently the River Raisin Massacre) was a particularly disastrous episode for American forces during the War of 1812. It took place near to modern day Monroe in Michigan in January 1813. Advancing American forces under Winchester, deputy commander of the Army of the Northwest, forced British forces and their Indian allies out of Frenchtown after light skirmishing as part of an initiative intended to eventually recapture Detroit. The incidents described in this book took place over a four day period that encompassed several engagements. After an initial retreat the British forces rallied, counter attacked and inflicted a decisive defeat on the Americans, killing almost 400 of them. Subsequently the Indian allies of the British fell upon large numbers of American wounded and prisoners, including Kentucky Volunteers, and slaughtered them-the event that gave the engagement its notoriety. The battlefield saw more Americans killed than in any other single combat of the War of 1812 and holds the unfortunate record of being the deadliest conflict fought upon the soil of Michigan. This unique Leonaur edition contains three pieces about the battles in the River Raisin region, among them several valuable first-hand accounts by participants and survivors that provide the modern student with a comprehensive overview of the times from several perspectives. A valuable addition to the libraries of all those interested in the War of 1812.
Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.

Описание: The Great Sioux War of 1876-77 began at daybreak on March 17, 1876, when Colonel Joseph J. Reynolds and six cavalry companies struck a village of Northern Cheyennes - Sioux allies - thereby propelling the Northern Plains tribes into war. The ensuing last stand of the Sioux against Anglo-American settlement of their homeland spanned some eighteen months, playing out across more than twenty battle and skirmish sites and costing hundreds of lives on both sides and many millions of dollars. And it all began at Powder River.Powder River: Disastrous Opening of the Great Sioux War recounts the wintertime Big Horn Expedition and its singular great battle, along with the stories of the Northern Cheyennes and their elusive leader Old Bear. Historian Paul Hedren tracks both sides of the conflict through a rich array of primary source material, including the transcripts of Reynolds's court-martial and Indian recollections. The disarray and incompetence of the war's beginnings - officers who failed to take proper positions, disregard of orders to save provisions, failure to cooperate, and abandonment of the dead and a wounded soldier - in many ways anticipated the catastrophe that later occurred at the Little Big Horn. Forty photographs, many previously unpublished, and five new maps detail the action from start to ignominious conclusion. Hedren's comprehensive account takes Powder River out of the shadow of the Little Big Horn and reveals how much this critical battle tells us about the army's policy and performance in the West, and about the debacle soon to follow.
