Book 7: The North Hollywood Detective Club Ultimate Companion Book - Not a series book, but chock full of interesting info, character bios and other fun facts about the book series, including the original short story that started it all and a special chapter with tips for young writers. Appropriate Age Ranges When I set out to write these books, I based them on the type of teen mystery books that I enjoyed reading when I was in the 7th and 8th grade. So if you're looking for some good mystery books for 13 year olds, or good mystery books for 7th graders, or 8th graders, these are perfect. Having said that, I've heard from plenty of parents whose 10-year-olds really enjoyed the books, particularly books 1 and 2. I've also heard from parents who read the books with their 10 and 11-year-olds (a terrific practice, by the way), and the response was excellent. If your preteen (age 10-12) has good reading skills and enjoys books, then books 1 and 2, and the soon-to-be-released books 5 and 6, are excellent. Books 3 and 4 are action-packed and slightly more intense. They are appropriate for ages 12 and up.
