Описание: Tracing the transnational influences of what has been known as a uniquely American genre, "the Western," Susan Kollin's Captivating Westerns analyzes key moments in the history of multicultural encounters between the Middle East and the American West. In particular, the book examines how experiences of contact and conflict have played a role in defining the western United States as a crucial American landscape. Kollin interprets the popular Western as a powerful national narrative and presents the cowboy hero as a captivating figure who upholds traditional American notions of freedom and promise, not just in the region but across the globe. Captivating Westerns revisits popular uses of the Western plot and cowboy hero in understanding American global power in the post-9/11 period. Although various attempts to build a case for the war on terror have referenced this quintessential American region, genre, and hero, they have largely overlooked the ways in which these celebrated spaces, icons, and forms, rather than being uniquely American, are instead the result of numerous encounters with and influences from the Middle East. By tracing this history of contact, encounter, and borrowing, this study expands the scope of transnational studies of the cowboy and the Western and in so doing discloses the powerful and productive influence of the Middle East on the American West. Susan Kollin is professor of English at Montana State University. She is the editor of Postwestern Cultures: Literature, Theory, Space (Nebraska, 2007) and author of Nature's State: Imagining Alaska as the Last Frontier.
Описание: Spying and warfare have always gone hand-in-hand. From Julius Caesar to modern generals, we have accounts of commanders covertly gathering information about their opponents, ensuring they have the intelligence they need to conduct a war.
Описание: In the past decade or two, there has been an upsurge of interest in Maya history. This was partly fueled by the mythical Maya prediction of the end of the world in 2012, which for a short period of time put this civilization under the media spotlight. But there is much more to their culture than the common misconception about their calendar.

Описание: Explore Captivating Hindu Myths of Hindu Gods and Goddesses The stories in Hindu myth stem from traditions within Hinduism, drawing on stories from ancient texts, like the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. Keep in mind that because different versions of Hinduism inspire different people, many different versions of the stories float through the jungle and over the stones of temples and traditions. The stories in this volume are my version, though I've stuck as closely to the original myths and legends as imagination allows. At the end of this book, you'll find a short bibliography for further research and reading. Within this book, you'll find the following Hindu myths covered

If you want to discover the captivating life of Tiberius, then keep reading...
Compared with the preceding rulers, Julius Caesar and Augustus, the name does not ring out with the same fame and pomposity. Shakespeare wrote no plays about Tiberius; his name does not echo in the history books with the same awe-inspiring prominence. Even his successors, Caligula and Nero, are more famous than he was. In fact, Tiberius can hardly be called famous at all. History knows him more for his infamy.
Tiberius is remembered, if he is remembered at all, for his bad behavior. He spent much of his rule on a Greek island surrounded by every pleasure that his diseased flesh could dream of, abandoning his empire to scandal and intrigue. He is a great villain of Roman history.
In Tiberius: A Captivating Guide to the Life of Ancient Rome's Second Emperor and How He Ruled the Roman Empire, you will discover topics such as
Before the Emperors
Born into Turmoil
The Eye of the Emperor
In the Shadow of Augustus
First Conquest
Forced Marriage
Rock Bottom
Ascension
A Slippery Slope to Capri
The Last Javelin
And much, much more
