A vivid and original account of one of Ireland's greatest poets by an acclaimed Irish historian and literary biographer
The most important Irish poet of the postwar era, Seamus Heaney rose to prominence as his native Northern Ireland descended into sectarian violence. A national figure at a time when nationality was deeply contested, Heaney also won international acclaim, culminating in the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1995. In On Seamus Heaney, leading Irish historian and literary critic R. F. Foster gives an incisive and eloquent account of the poet and his work against the background of a changing Ireland. Drawing on unpublished drafts and correspondence, Foster provides illuminating and personal interpretations of Heaney's work. Though a deeply charismatic figure, Heaney refused to don the mantle of public spokesperson, and Foster identifies a deliberate evasiveness and creative ambiguity in his poetry. In this, and in Heaney's evocation of a disappearing rural Ireland haunted by political violence, Foster finds parallels with the other towering figure of Irish poetry, W. B. Yeats. Foster also discusses Heaney's cosmopolitanism, his support for dissident poets abroad, and his increasing focus in his later work on death and spiritual transcendence. Above all, Foster examines how Heaney created an extraordinary connection with an exceptionally wide readership, giving him an authority and power unique among contemporary writers. Combining a vivid account of Heaney's life and a compelling reading of his entire oeuvre, On Seamus Heaney extends our understanding of the man as it enriches our appreciation of his poetry.

Описание: Regional voices from England, Ireland, and Scotland inspired Seamus Heaney, the 1995 Nobel prize-winner, to become a poet, and his home region of Northern Ireland provided the subject matter for much of his poetry. In his work, Heaney explored, recorded, and preserved both the disappearing agrarian life of his origins and the dramatic rise of sectarianism and the subsequent outbreak of the Northern Irish "Troubles" beginning in the late 1960s. At the same time, Heaney consistently imagined a new region of Northern Ireland where the conflicts that have long beset it and, by extension, the relationship between Ireland and the United Kingdom might be synthesized and resolved. Finally, there is a third region Heaney committed himself to explore and map--the spirit region, that world beyond our ken. In" Seamus Heaney`s Regions," Richard Rankin Russell argues that Heaney`s regions--the first, geographic, historical, political, cultural, linguistic; the second, a future where peace, even reconciliation, might one day flourish; the third, the life beyond this one--offer the best entrance into and a unified understanding of Heaney`s body of work in poetry, prose, translations, and drama. As Russell shows, Heaney believed in the power of ideas--and the texts representing them--to begin resolving historical divisions. For Russell, Heaney`s regionalist poetry contains a "Hegelian synthesis" view of history that imagines potential resolutions to the conflicts that have plagued Ireland and Northern Ireland for centuries. Drawing on extensive archival and primary material by the poet, "Seamus Heaney`s Regions "examines Heaney`s work from before his first published poetry volume, "Death of a Naturalist" in 1966, to his most recent volume, the elegiac "Human Chain" in 2010, to provide the most comprehensive treatment of the poet`s work to date. "Richard Rankin Russell`s "Seamus Heaney`s Regions "is a major and original contribution; it is hard to think of another critical work on Heaney that is so complete in its coverage, from the earliest activities to" Human Chain." Russell is extremely well-versed in Heaney`s writings, and extends his analysis beyond the usual concentration on the poetry to bring in the crucial prose and dramatic works, including the early, largely forgotten items. The breadth of his approach makes his book of interest to scholars in such neighboring fields as social geography, history, and theology as well as contemporary literature." --Bernard O`Donoghue, Wadham College, University of Oxford

Описание:
While postcolonial studies of Romantic-period literature have flourished in recent years, scholars have long neglected the extent of Samuel Taylor Coleridge's engagement with the Orient in both his literary and philsophical writings. Bringing together leading international writers, Coleridge, Romanticism and the Orient is the first substantial exploration of Coleridge's literary and scholarly representations of the east and the ways in which these were influenced by and went on to influence his own work and the orientalism of the Romanticists more broadly. Bringing together postcolonial, philsophical, historicist and literary-critical perspectives, this groundbreaking book develops a new understanding of 'Orientalism' that recognises the importance of colonial ideologies in Romantic representations of the East as well as appreciating the unique forms of meaning and value which authors such as Coleridge asscoiated with the Orient.

Описание: This study will enable readers to gain clearer understanding of the life and major works of Seamus Heaney. It considers literary influences on Heaney, ranging from English poets such as Wordsworth, Hughes, and Auden to Irish poets such as Kavanagh and Yeats to world poets such as Virgil and Dante.
Описание: ""The Soul Exceeds its Circumstances": The Later Poetry of Seamus Heaney brings together sixteen of the most prominent scholars who have written on Seamus Heaney to examine the Nobel prize-winner`s later poetry from a variety of critical and theoretical perspectives. While a great deal of attention has been devoted to Heaney`s early and middle poems--the Bog Poems in particular--this book focuses on the poetry collected in Heaney`s Seeing Things (1991), The Spirit Level (1996), Electric Light (2001), District and Circle (2006), and Human Chain (2010) as a thematically connected set of writings. The starting point of the essays in this collection is that these later poems can be grouped in terms of style, theme, approach, and intertextuality. They develop themes that were apparent in Heaney`s earlier work, but they also break with these themes and address issues that are radically different from those of the earlier collections. The essays are divided into five sections, focusing on ideas of death, the later style, translation and transnational poetics, luminous things and gifts, and usual and unusual spaces. A number of the contributors see Heaney as stressing the literary over the actual and as always looking at the interstices and positions of liminality and complexity. His use of literary references in his later poetry exemplifies his search for literary avatars against whom he can test his own ideas and with whom he can enter into an aesthetic and ethical dialogue. The essayists cover a great deal of Heaney`s debts to classical and modern literature--in the original languages and in translations--and demonstrate the degree to which the streets on which Heaney walked and wrote were two-way: he was influenced by Virgil, Petrarch, Milosz, Wordsworth, Keats, Rilke and others and, in turn, had an impact on contemporary poets. This remarkable collection will appeal to scholars and literary critics, undergraduates as well as graduate students, and to the many general readers of Heaney`s poetry. "The scope and remit of `The Soul Exceeds Its Circumstances` position it to make a welcome and timely contribution to scholarship on Seamus Heaney, whose death in 2013 brought to an end over five decades of creative output. Eugene O`Brien`s decision to devote a collection of essays to the later poetry thus promises to fill a gap in `Heaney Studies, ` extending coverage and suggesting some new directions in critical methodology." --Jason David Hall, University of Exeter"--

Описание: Seamus Heaney`s death in August 2013 brought to completion his body of work, and scholars are only now coming to understand the full scale and importance of his career. Much of the scholarship to date on Heaney has focused on his poetry. O`Brien`s new work, however, focuses on Heaney`s essays, book chapters, and lectures as it seeks to understand how Heaney explored the poet`s role in the world.

Описание: The death in 2013 of Seamus Heaney is an appropriate point to honour the great Irish poet`s major contribution to classical reception in modern poetry. This is the first volume to be wholly dedicated to this perspective on Heaney`s work, focusing primarily on his fascination with Greek drama and myth and his interest in Latin poetry.
