Описание: With the astounding success of social networking systems such as Facebook, Bebo, LinkedIn, and MySpace, interest in social networks soared amongst researchers and pr- titioners. Organised groups of individuals can be of considerable value to ?rms, but a deeper understanding of the phenomenon is still lacking. User communities are social networks of individuals who group together with the purpose of exchanging ideas, insights and experiences with each other. Although the concept of leveraging user communities for innovation management is not new, most of the literature has assumed the ready existence of user communities and has concentrated on examining how ?rms can cooperate with them. Research on the emergence and persistence of user communities has mostly been neglected. Celine Schulz attempts to ?ll this gap by focussing on why user communities exist, what their goals are and how they function. In her dissertation, Celine Schulz undertakes a study of individuals in user communities of the software ?rm Computer Associates (CA). Using an online survey, a unique data set of users in 161 di?erent CA user groups was assembled. Thisdissertationconsistsofthreeempiricalstudiesbasedonthisdataset. The ?rst two studies analyse why individuals communicate with other members in their user communities, that is why they are willing to share information with each other and how they bene't from the interaction with their user communities. The third study examines how user communities can be leveraged for ?rms innovation processes, by speci?cally investigating the individual- and group-speci?c attributes of customer collaborators from user communities."

Описание:

Organizations are complex social systems that are not easy to understand, yet they must be managed if a company is to succeed. This book explains networks and how managers and organizations can navigate them to produce successful strategic innovation outcomes. Although managers are increasingly aware of the importance of social relations for the inner-workings of the organization, they often lack insights and tools to analyze, influence or even create these networks.

This book draws on insights from social network theory; insights sharpened by research in a number of different empirical settings including production, engineering, financial services, consulting, food processing, and R&D/hi-tech organizations and alternates between offering critical real business examples and more rigorous analysis.

This concise book is vital reading for students of business and management as well as managers and executives.

Описание: Communities of Practice (CoPs) are being increasingly employed in organizations and are probably the knowledge management tool today. They are a truly useful knowledge-sharing, transferring and retaining tool, surpassing other int- organizational networks such as project teams, operational teams, and purely informal networks. They also enjoy far greater success than pure IT tools employed to similar ends. The advantage is that they are based on like-minded people's fa- to-face meetings, exchange of experience, discussion and development of best practices etc. on an intra-organizational level, although these activities are often informal and not supported or recognized. As ever, practice has shown that many intra-organizational CoPs simply do not work while others are truly successful. The thesis provides the readers with some surprising insights into the nature of CoPs and the specific contributing factors. Stefano Borzillo's meticulous research started off by examining a large variety of CoPs by means of six identified success factors. The results of Stefano's investigation revealed three types of CoPs, which he calls "innovating strategic," "operational excellence," and "social and productive space" CoPs and which may all three be present within a single organization. Another insight in this regard was that each of them is suited to fulfill different objectives and that there is no one type of CoP that is best for managing the development and transfer of practices. The latter is determined by the CoPs' objectives, which are again determined by the organizational context. Stefano Borzillo also describes each of these CoP configurations' success factors.

Описание: The concept of open innovation has become increasingly popular in the management and policy literature on technology and innovation. However, despite the large volume of empirical work, many of the prescriptions being proposed are fairly general and not specific to particular contexts and contingencies. The proponents of open innovation are universally positive but research suggests that the specific mechanisms and outcomes of open innovation models are very sensitive to context and contingency. This is not surprising because the open or closed nature of innovation is historically contingent and does not entail a simple shift from closed to open as often suggested in the literature. Research has shown that patterns of innovation differ fundamentally by sector, firm and strategy. Therefore, there is a need to examine the mechanisms that help to generate successful open innovation. In this book, the authors contribute to a shift in the debate from potentially misleading general prescriptions, and provide conceptual and empirical insights into the precise mechanisms and potential limitations of open innovation research and management practice.
