Описание: A hull is the watertight body of a ship or boat. Above the hull is the superstructure and/or deckhouse, where present. The line where the hull meets the water surface is called the waterline. The structure of the hull varies depending on the vessel type. In a typical modern steel ship, the structure consists of watertight and non-tight decks, major transverse and watertight members called bulkheads, intermediate members such as girders, stringers and webs, and minor members called ordinary transverse frames, frames, or longitudinals, depending on the structural arrangement. The shape of the hull is entirely dependent upon the needs of the design. Shapes range from a nearly perfect box in the case of scow barges, to a needle-sharp surface of revolution in the case of a racing multihull sailboat. The shape is chosen to strike a balance between cost, hydrostatic considerations (accommodation, load carrying and stability), hydrodynamics (speed, power requirements, and motion and behavior in a seaway) and special considerations for the ships role, such as the rounded bow of an icebreaker or the flat bottom of a landing craft. The book provides an overview of cutting-edge developments in hybrid composite-metal marine ship hulls, covering the critical differences in material processing and structural behavior that must be taken into account to maximise benefits and performance. Supporting the design of effective hybrid hulls through proper consideration of the benefits and challenges inherent to heterogenic structures, the book covers specific details of quality control, manufacturing, mechanical and thermal stress, and other behavioural aspects that need to be treated differently when engineering hybrid ship hulls.

Описание: The fundamental characteristics of a ships design, and how they affect its behaviour at sea are of crucial importance to many people involved in the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of all marine vessels. Naval architects and those working in ship design need to understand these principles in depth. Marine engineers must likewise recognise the degree to which their activities are influenced and bounded by these principles. Naval architecture is an engineering discipline dealing with the engineering design process, shipbuilding, maintenance, and operation of marine vessels and structures. Naval architecture involves basic and applied research, design, development, design evaluation and calculations during all stages of the life of a marine vehicle. Preliminary design of the vessel, its detailed design, construction, trials, operation and maintenance, launching and dry-docking are the main activities involved. Knowledge of the fundamentals of naval architecture is essential not only for newcomers to the field but also the wealth of non-naval architects working in the marine area, including marine engineers, marine surveyors and ship crews. The book provides the most well-known and trusted introduction to the topic, offering a clear and concise take on the basics of this broad field. The book is ideal both for those approaching the subject for the first time and those looking to update or refresh their knowledge on areas outside of their direct expertise.

Описание: Propulsion technology is a complex, multidisciplinary topic with design, construction, operational and research implications. A propeller is a rotating fan like structure which is used to propel the ship by using the power generated and transmitted by the main engine of the ship. The transmitted power is converted from rotational motion to generate a thrust which imparts momentum to the water, resulting in a force that acts on the ship and pushes it forward. Using propulsion forces, ships are able to manoeuvre themselves in the water. Initially while there were limited number of ship propulsion systems, in the present era there are several innovative ones with which a vessel can be fitted with. Today ship propulsion is not just about successful movement of the ship in the water. It also includes using the best mode of propulsion to ensure a better safety standard for the marine ecosystem along with cost efficiency. The book provides comprehensive and progressive coverage to furnish marine engineers, naval architects and anyone involved in propulsion and hydrodynamics with the knowledge needed to do the job. The book brings together a great range of knowledge on propulsion technology, a multi-disciplinary and international subject.

Описание: Humans have been studying the ocean since pre-historic times when people would venture out from their homes along the coast in rafts. Around 2000-3000 years ago, naturalists and philosophers, including Aristotle, began to try to understand the vast bodies of water. While over 70% of the globe is covered by the ocean, much of it remains a mystery to us. Its immense size, depth, and power entice scientists to uncover the mysteries the ocean holds. Oceanography is the study of the world ocean, including aspects of biology, chemistry, physics, geology, meteorology, and astronomy, among many others. Oceanography provides a solid integration of physical, chemical, geological, and biological topics. Organized to allow instructors to advance methodically, this book presents latest coverage of the marine world and its organization, giving a complete outline of how and why the fluid earth system acts the way it does. The developments in the field of ocean acoustics over recent years make this book an important tool for specialists in acoustics, oceanography, marine biology, and related fields. Oceanography covers a wide range of topics, from marine life and ecosystems, to currents and waves, to the movement of sediments, to seafloor geology. As humans have come to populate most corners of the globe, our impact on the oceans is stressing their ability to continue operating normally. Healthy oceans are critically significant to maintaining a healthy planet. Perhaps the most important observation is that oceanography gives us a world view, an understanding, of the global system that is our environment, which can inspire our work, wherever it leads.

Описание: The analysis, design and construction of off-shore structures is arguably one of the most demanding sets of tasks faced by the engineering profession. Over and above the usual conditions and situations met by land-based structures, off-shore structures have the added complication of being placed in an ocean environment where hydrodynamic interaction effects and dynamic response become major considerations in their design. A basic understanding of a number of key subject areas is essential to an engineer likely to be involved in the design of offshore structures. This book provides a broad overview of some of the key factors in the analysis and design of offshore structures to be considered by an engineer uninitiated in the field of offshore engineering. Topics covered range from water wave theories, structure-fluid interaction in waves to the prediction of extreme values of response from spectral modeling approaches. It presents a new outlook on the measurement of wave forces on ocean structures, uniting the deterministic and probabilistic methodologies to wave theory and linking the methods used in field and experimental measurement.
