Описание: The morning Arlene Brown read in her hometown newspaper about the abandoned children in the aftermath of the 1994 Rwandan genocide, she did what few retirees would ever consider doing. She joined with a mission group to make the long journey to Africa. Her memoir, Hope Made Real, is filled with rich experiences and courageous actions. Her writings reveal that the most important journeys we make cant be measured in miles, but in the strength, wisdom, and love found along the way.
Arlene is a deeply revolutionary woman who, in these pages, shares her wild and sometimes frightening adventures. She speaks with refreshing candor, about her own successes and mistakes. This inspiring eye-opening book shares all the ups and downs that such a life-changing decision entail. It is soul material, human and tragic, funny and touching, deeply spiritual.
In this book you will not only learn why Arlene gave up everything to travel to Africa, but what continues to drive her in her ongoing vision of a better kinder world. Woven throughout the pages, Arlene shares stories from her childhood that help the reader make sense of her life-changing decision. Her years of raising a family of five, working as a practical nurse, volunteering in the prison system, and her many years laboring in a high-tech factory suddenly come together. All of this, and none of this, prepared her for what was ahead.
Arlenes move to Rwanda, and what she believed would be her final chapter, was the beginning of a whole new book. With many chapters still to come, now at the age of ninety, her life continues to move in strange and wonderful directions. Saving the world may be out of her purview. But, with courage, tenacity and most of all love, Arlene continues to make a difference in the small undertaking allotted to her. When people ask her if she is a missionary, she tells them, No. Instead she describes herself as, a woman with a mission. Mama Arlenes quest to help repair the world happens to be in Muhanga, Rwanda--the home of Urukundo Learning Center.
The book draws in the reader as she tells of her escape from an erupting volcano, is smuggled out of the country with the aid of the United States Embassy and runs from angry African bees. Her story reads like a detective novel as she unravels the secrets that lie behind the fa ade of some of the early players. Hope Made Real is filled with memorable stories of the children whom she touched with her love and from whom she in turn received so much more. Eight pages of pictures illustrate her life from childhood to Founder of Urukundo Foundation and Executive Director of its primary school of over nine-hundred children, the Sewing Center to train seamstresses and tailors, as well as the Dental Clinic, farm and so much more.
Rarely do women take the risk to break away and begin a second chapter post-retirement. Honest and down-to-earth, without apology, she challenges others to answer their own calling to servant leadership. Mama Arlenes extraordinary story is a lightning rod to the head and heart stimulating us to get out of our easy chairs and challenges us to do something meaningful with our lives.

Описание: "I was someone hungry for stories; more specifically, I was someone who craved after facts. I was, you see, a person with no history. Lacking this, I developed a curiosity about other's people's stories.

. . ."

Clara Perez is a reporter on a small South Seas island.

An orphan raised by nuns, she is a young woman with origins shrouded in mystery. Full of idealistic ambition, she grows tired of the trivial assignments she's given at the daily paper, yearning to write articles of substance. So when the tiny street of Calle de Leon bursts into flames after a student demonstration--and a soldier kills an unarmed man--Clara seizes the chance to cover the explosive story.

Yet after Clara rushes to the burning street to investigate the tragedy, she discovers another, more personal one involving some remarkable truths about her unknown past--ghosts, she realizes, which have been silently pursuing her all her life.

And as family secrets begin to unfold, Clara's missing history slowly spreads itself out on the tumultuous backdrop of a country wracked by revolution. . .

.

An evocative and multilayered tale, at once political and personal, Eating Fire and Drinking Water is an extraordinary work, a powerful and pulsing novel of politics and commitment, loyalty and love, and the poignant search for truth.

Описание:

We live in a time when many people don't seem to believe that things matter. Everything simply seems ordinary. So things like days, choices, efforts, and their own lives--many don't see as valuable and significant. But the Word indicates otherwise. It is all-important, every "ordinary" thing. We may think things are insignificant because we can't see the causes and effects in the spiritual world, but they're there. It distresses me to think that many people don't see the enormity and power of the small things they encounter in their everyday lives, the small choices, and the seemingly insignificant things that no other person sees. If you are one of those people who think that way, I wish I could reach out, grab you, shake you, and tell you, "No, no It matters What you do matters What you believe matters What you think matters You matter "

Writing these stories, I became increasingly convinced that "ordinary," as we understand it, does not exist in God's realm. So, I continued to create true stories of everyday life because I believe that our extraordinary God shines through every common moment. My hope is that readers will see Him in the everyday stories and in their own lives. I wrote about Him being right there because you can't exist on earth without being touched by His fingertips He is accessible to all and intensely interested in our ordinary, little lives.

Описание:

What do knitters Permelia O'Brien and Betty Fitzandreu have in common besides a love of knitting? Both have been betrayed by their husbands.

Permelia moved to town when her husband left her for a much younger woman. Her new apartment is over the town morgue and when she finds Betty's husband's hat in the parking lot after Ed Anderson's body is brought in it quickly becomes clear that Betty's husband wasn't just cheating with another woman. He had a whole other family.

Still, that doesn't explain why someone murdered him, and as Permelia and her new friends dig deeper into the mystery, it becomes clear the killer isn't finished yet.

Описание: Combatting fatphobia and racism to reclaim a space of belonging at the intersection of fat, Black, and female.

Even if Black bodies were thin bodies, we'd still be considered ugly and unacceptable. Even if we were slender, we'd be criticized about our wide hips, noses, and lips. Our fatness exacerbates America's already anxious views against race and further demonizes our existence by relegating our roles in society. We're good enough to be mammies, but never to have a family of our own. We can work in the office, but never as the receptionist. We can be the girlfriend...in the dark...that no one sees. Ever.

To live in a body at the intersection of fat, Black, and female is to be on the margins. From concern-trolling--"I just want you to be healthy"--to outright attacks, fat Black bodies that fall outside dominant constructs of beauty and wellness are subjected to healthism, racism, and misogynoir. The spaces carved out by third-wave feminism and the fat liberation movement fail at true inclusivity and intersectionality; fat Black women need to create their own safe spaces and community, instead of tirelessly giving labor to educate, chastise, and strive against dominant groups.

Structured into three sections--"belonging," "resistance," and "acceptance"--and informed by personal history, community stories, and deep research, Fat Girls in Black Bodies breaks down the myths, stereotypes, tropes, and outright lies we've been sold about race, body size, belonging, and health. Cox's razor-sharp cultural commentary exposes the racist roots of diet culture, healthism, and the ways we erroneously conflate body size with personal responsibility. She explores how to reclaim space and create belonging in a hostile world, pushing back against tired pressures of "going along just to get along," and dismantles the institutionally ingrained myths about race, size, gender, and worth that deny fat Black women their selfhood.
