Описание: Making the decision to join the military is a big one that affects not only the person who will be wearing the uniform but also family members, and even close friends. Military Life 101 is a brief orientation to life in the military.
Описание: It was 2006, and eight hundred soldiers from the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) base in pseudonymous ""Armyville,"" Canada, were scheduled to deploy to Kandahar. Many students in the Armyville school district were destined to be affected by this and several subsequent deployments. These deployments, however, represented such a new and volatile situation that the school district lacked - as indeed most Canadians lacked - the understanding required for an optimum organizational response. Growing Up in Armyville provides a close-up look at the adolescents who attended Armyville High School (AHS) between 2006 and 2010. How did their mental health compare with that of their peers elsewhere in Canada? How were their lives affected by the Afghanistan mission - at home, at school, among their friends, and when their parents returned with post-traumatic stress disorder? How did the youngsters cope with the stress? What did their efforts cost them? Based on questions from the National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth, administered to all youth attending AHS in 2008, and on in-depth interviews with sixty-one of the youth from CAF families, this book provides some answers. It also documents the partnership that occurred between the school district and the authors' research team. Beyond its research findings, this pioneering book considers the past, present, and potential role of schools in supporting children who have been affected by military deployments. It also assesses the broader human costs to CAF families of their enforced participation in the volatile overseas missions of the twenty-first century.
Tom's parents felt a sense of relief when he was diagnosed with Asperger's at age four. It helped to explain his unique outlook and way of being in the world. But that was just the beginning. It led his journalist mother on a pathway toward understanding and acceptance, introducing her to some extraordinary people along the way.
Katie Sutherland reflects upon these encounters and her own family's experience in Temples and Towers. Here, we meet Liesel, who rose above her traumatic school years to become an opera singer; Cassie, who writes fan fiction and grows plants from seed; Louis, who wants to study volcanology at university; Alex, who couldn't bear the smell of food as a child, but now crafts recipes with unusual herbs and ingredients. Their stories and those of their families, and others, will stay with readers and provide a cornerstone for connection and awareness.
Touching, positive and enlightening, Temples and Towers is an important read for parents, teachers or anyone interested in autism, neurodiversity or disability. Combining memoir, interviews and theory, it provides an intimate insight into the complexities of family life with autism, while also shining a light on the role we all have to play in destigmatisation and support.

Описание: Coming home from military service is a process of reconnection and reintegration that is best engaged within a compassionate community. There are almost 20 million veterans and service members living in the United States, including more than one million Americans deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan since 2001. Post-war life can be challenging unless there are communities responding with compassion and hospitality. How churches welcome and respond will be critical to the well-being of our nation's veterans, their families, our local communities, and our nation. Zachary Moon, a commissioned military chaplain, has seen the unique challenges for those adjusting to post-war life. In this book, he prepares congregations to mobilize a receptive and restorative ministry with military service members and their families. Designed to be accessible to both clergy and laypersons, this is an ideal resource for individuals or small groups interested in addressing the opportunities and challenges facing veterans and their families. Discussion questions and other resources included will help support small-group dialogue and community building.
