Jon Val jean, in the story of Les Miserables, was a convict and a murderer. The cold and condemning world made his heart increasingly hardened because people hurt him with their prejudice and unforgiving spirit. He endured a wild and difficult 19 years of prison life. Even after having been released, a more severe coldness awaited him in the world. Jon Val jean could have easily become angrier and meaner. However, one priest's forgiveness and unconditional love changed him into an honorable man. Jon Val jean became a marvelous Christian. It was the priest who helped him to start a new life. To this angry and hateful convict who ran away after stealing the priest's silver spoon, the saintly priest gave Jon Val jean even more valuable things and said in front of the police who caught Jon Val jean, "Jon Val jean, I gave you much more than this silver spoon. There is a saying in Asian classical battle principle by Sun Tzu (c. 6th century BC) who was a Chinese General, military strategist, and author of The Art of War, an immensely influential ancient Chinese book on military strategy; said, . "Know your enemy and know yourself, find naught in fear for 100 battles. Know yourself but not your enemy, find level of loss and victory. Know thy enemy but not yourself, wallow in defeat every time." (知彼知己,百戰不殆)
From the moment of human beings' fall and great misery, God had already planned to send Christ through the channel of the human seed, the mother of Jesus, Mary. God planned to save the world and restore the human condition of happiness.
At the moment when humans fell, God had already given the promise of restoration and provided the remedy. That remedy was Jesus Christ. Humans fell, but God did not fail in executing His redemptive plan. Evil bruises us, but God gives us restoration and victory through Messiah.
That hope shines like a morning star in the dark sky.

Life is a continuing response to challenges. The challenges in our lives will be over when our lives end. Some people will fall because they cannot overcome their challenges. However, those who overcome and win their trials will become much stronger and mature people. How you handle the adversity determines how you will get through it.
Arnold J. Toynbee, English historian wrote 12-volume "Study of History" (1934-61), put forward a philosophy of history with a phrase, "Challenge and Response". It was based on his observation of the cycle of civilization development and the decline.
"People of civilization that successfully responded to external challenges survived, but civilization that failed to do so disappeared. In addition, people who had no trials and challenges fell into history and disappeared easily in history.
The Nile River had abundant in quantity of water and fertile soil that brought the rich of farming. However, too much water caused the continuous flood, it could destroy the country and it was a big challenge.
However, they responded creatively and positively. They developed the astronomy to predict the weather and the flooding. Geometry also developed for surveying the land and construction.
The Euphrates civilization Tigris civilization, and the Yellow River civilization, including the Nile River civilization occurred because of their proper respond to challenges and trials." (Author paraphrase)
We sometimes face the adversity that we never predicted. It could fail us; we could experience the hurt severely. However, when we successfully respond to the challenges and creatively find the way to progress, we will experience the way of the exploring the new and unprecedented success.
Prophet Isaiah said, "Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint." (Isaiah 40:28-31, NIV)
God's spirit will give us the wisdom to find a way to make trials become an opportunity to create new things.
When we allow His spirit to renew us, we will "soar on wings like eagle".

Invite Christ into your life as navigator and captain of your life, and the Lord will calm the storm.
Winston Churchill, a former prime minister of the United Kingdom, gave a famous speech to his people when they were afraid and panicking in the middle of World War II: "Do not give up, and take courage Do not give up Do not give up Take courage "
"Some went out on the sea in ships; they were merchants on the mighty waters. They mounted up to the heavens and went down to the depths; in their peril their courage melted away. They reeled and staggered like drunkards; they were at their wits' end. Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and he brought them out of their distress. He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed. They were glad when it grew calm, and he guided them to their desired haven." (Psalm 107:23-30)
If you have courage and consistently believe that you will overcome. God will give you serenity in your heart and calm the situation as Jesus calmed the storm at Galilee. So it is my prayer for you today that God will give you courage and calmness and help you walk on water even on stormy days. Amen.
